ANOTHER Shrockworks Front Bumper.....

I never thought the first damage to my Shrockworks bumper would be from a Honda Accord. I was in the left lane of the main street a half mile from getting home. There was a van in the right lane about two car lengths ahead of me. The van made a right turn into the driveway of the shopping plaza. I couldn't see the Honda, the Honda couldn't see me but the driver decided to exit the plaza parking lot and make a left turn while I was going straight. BAM!

If it wasn't for the rain I think I could've stopped before making impact. Luckily I slowed down enough (~20mph) that I hit the driver-side rear door and not the driver's door. Her car is beat up.

My truck......no damage, because the Shrockworks bumper is QUALITY! Only a few powdercoat scratches and some leftover silver Honda paint. Not even one slight dent to the bumper. The bumper did get pushed up a bit and the top of it is barely touching the bottom of the grill. I will need to realign it but that shouldn't be a problem. The only part that did break was the plastic tabs of the OEM fog light housings to attach to bumper (see empty hole). The fog light didn't even break.

All that said, I am grateful that no one was hurt. I don't even want to imagine what could have been if I had hit the driver's door.

Ummm..... The reason that the bumper "did get pushed up a bit" is because the frame horn(s) is(are) now bent most likely. Let us know what you find out when you get in there. And sorry for your misfortune. Glad no one was injured.

Looks like the Honda faired well, I guess the low speed helped, but still considering the beast of a bumper you have the damage to the car is constrained to the door. Still glad it wasn't the driver door.
 
I bet she puckered up pretty tight when she looked over and saw that beast coming at her......lol:roadkill:
 
Don't mean to hijack here...but this seem like a good place to ask a question that I've been curious about for a while.

What is the deal with the front Airbags when you install a Shrockworks bumper? In my old truck the airbag sensors are in the front and rely on some compression to trigger release of the bags. It seams to me that a bumper like this might keep the airbags from deploying at most collision speeds, which seems unsafe.

I could be completely off on this but I am just curious. Any one know?

Also I am very glad your truck (and everyone, of course) is ok! It's been one of my favorites from day 1 and I am totally copying your wheel/tire config.

I do not know of any sensors in any vehicle that rely on compression. Every sensor that I know of is a type of deceleration device. I do know the first sensors were a type of "ball in a tube" design and most vehicles today have a piezoelectric or micro switch mounted to determine rate of deceleration, which I think is around 7g's to trigger, which is equivalent to a 15 mph crash or somewhere close to that speed. Also, to prevent unwanted activation there is usually a second switch mounted in a different location.

Also remember this is a BOF (body on frame) vehicle and location mounts will be different than with a unibody vehicle, which normally mounts the sensor forward of front crush zone. That's my understanding. Anyone else?

I was thinking this as I was typing. Just goes to show how much I know about air bag systems! Thanks for the explanation. That definitely makes more sense than a pressure system.
 
Update

Taken the truck to a few collision repair shops and all have said the frame was not compromised. Still working out the insurance logistics with the other driver but she has admitted 100% fault.

Glad to know you're alright and this is all working out for you man. Your truck is looking really mean. I love it.
 
Seeing these pics reinforces why I probably won't do an aftermarket bumper. I'm a decent driver (9 years since my last ticket, 9 years since my last collision, drive the speed limit, not a risk taker, 29 years old), but that doesn't mean I won't make a mistake on the road. If I'd been in a collision like this, but at fault instead, with an off-road bumper, and killed or injured the driver, I'm afraid that a good lawyer would take me to the cleaners in a civil law suit. Not only was I at fault for the accident, but I knowingly modified my car in a way to reduce the vehicle's ability to crumple (and a myriad of other physics issues that come along with a heavier bumper - usually a lift that raises bumper height and heavier tires that don't slow as quickly). Just something to consider. This is a litigious society so it isn't outside the realm of possibility.

Your truck does look ****ing awesome, though. :) Jealous.
