Another "what's my 4runner worth" thread!

So I know my 4runner is realistically worth about $5k. But that's without a motor having terminal motor damage. Mine has a piston slap. It runs great, no power loss, decent compression, not losing any fluids. But it has a God awful knock once warm at idle. Hard to hear any other time. If I were to sell it with my lift and tires still on, I would figure about $3k sounds good. $2500 is more realistic. I've kept up on all maintenance since I've owned it. Clean inside and out. 168,xxx miles. New tires 4000 miles ago.

Anyway. How much would this be worth? I'm thinking I may just cut my losses and spend a few extra thousand and get another 3rd gen. It'll probably be less than a decent used motor with labor expenses. What do you guys think?

I wanted to do that first. But I think I'd rather try to find a 5-speed with an elocker. Or at least an elocker. And id rather have a 99+. I'm so sick of the cup holder thing...

Plus a motor swap would run close to 3 grand. I could probably get in a nice 99 model for close to if not less than that.

For what it's worth, I had my motor replaced at 120,000 due to a botched oil change by a local Wal-Mart..(couldn't change my own oil at the apartment complex I lived in)...I went with a motor that had 60,000 miles on it out of a wrecked 2002 4Runner and I now have over 200,000 on the body and 140,000 on that motor and my 4Runner hasn't skipped a beat. Buying the engine and the install cost me around $3500, but that was in 2008. I would say buy another motor if you like the truck, it's hard to find clean inside and out 3rd Gen for a good price sometimes.

If you just want to sell this one and buy another one, more up your alley I would do it! No sense in continuing a project you've lost interest in anyway, or the project has become a money-pig

I would say start at $3,500, just because these things have higher street value (private selling), and let someone talk you down. Of course they will, but be at a higher starting point, so there is room left to help you pay for your future ride.

(Oh and BTW, make it known of all problems on the Craigslist add, because then if they meet you, they can't point things out and try to reduce the price. You can happily say it was thoroughly mentioned in the add. Thus saving you of price reduction)

But if your set on a 99+, and want an elocker, or multimode, or highlander, or 5-speed, etc. I would sell your rig and find a more suiting runner.

Trust me, when it'll come to modding, you'll be happy that you did.

This. You won't save much money buying a whole new truck, and that assumes that your new truck doesn't have any surprises waiting to pop up until after you've bought it. As you have discovered, people sell trucks for a reason.

This as well. I wanted to play the other side of the team though, so I stick to my previous statement. :decision:

I guess my only rebuttal to kidv would be that if he(OP) truly desires a newer 3rd gen, and wants all the goodies, he should go with selling that thing and buying a new one. His engine is on it's way out, and he could find one with all of the expensive components(multimode, elocker, 5 speed) factory installed. It would save him some money, and trouble. And then his platform is set. He could choose a different color runner, as well as one with lower mileage. Keep in mind the OP has a base model, so he could be somewhat lacking in the "Frills department".

But it also falls on how personally involved the OP has gotten with his rig. I couldn't sell mine, but I have 10x more sentimental value in my rig, that I will ever see in Franklins or Jacksons. So if this is how the OP feels, then drop a new(er) 5VZ and call it a night.

Many of the 4Runners are being put up for sale here, primarily because everyone is investing in cars. Can't say the same for most areas but don't rule it out.
