I'm trying to find out why most roof rack makers create a U-shaped cut-out in the rack outline to accommodate the shark fin, which houses the Xm Sirus radio antennae. I never activated the service even with the 90 day free trial and never plan to pay for it. I live in Los Angeles with plenty of good radio choices.
Some of the racks, like Gobi have a bar on both sides of the antennae without a cut-out. Baja Racks and Drabbits/Camelback both have cut-outs. Baja Racks says the U-shape is to avoid "Interference" with the antennae. Do they mean sat./radio reception interference or physical interference with the fin?
I want a stronger rack for lumber and other gear, without the cut-out. But I plan to buy a Baja Utility Rack because I need a low, flat rack that will clear below the trees in my driveway. I would like to ask Baja to make a rack without the cut-out. Can it be done? :eyebrows:
