I've heard rumors that the '16 will be made mostly of aluminum and have a V8 as an option. The release date seems to be a mystery with some saying late 2015 and some saying a year later. I've got a '96 Limited that I've babied since new that several folks want to buy. But, I won't let it go until a viable replacement is imminent. If the rumors pan out, the '16 T4R sounds like it would fill the bill nicely.
Any info on the 2016 T4R?

It will have a diesel V8, a 6 speed manual transmission and all models will be 4wd with a solid front axle. Standard tires will be 35's with 37's as an option. Dual lockers will also be standard. And it will get 90 MPG.
Base price will start at $11,000 and a fully loaded model will be just over $12k.

In all seriousness you're about as likely to see a V8 in a 4runner as you are to see unicorn skin seats or a perpetual motion machine engine. If you want a V8 buy a Lexus or a Sequoia, the V8 simply makes no sense in a mid sized vehicle like the 4runner.

I agree it does just fine with the V6. But, the people with the 4th gen V8s seem to like them, ditto the ones with the Lexus V8 SUV. I'd like the option to decide for myself if I want one with a V8.

Why would Toyota give you a V8 in the middle-class 4runner? That's dumb, if you want a V8 you gots to pay Lexus money.
I'm sure that's exactly why Toyota dropped the V8 from the 4runner. Nobody's going to pay Lexus $$ when they get the same performance from a Toyota. And remember, Toyota isn't in business to make you happy (or me or anyone else.) Toyota is in business to make MONEY.
I don't know Toyota's thinking. But, for several years they offered a T4R V8 at the same time the Lexus V8 was sold. So, I don't reckon it's out of the question.

My guess is that is exactly what will happen since the 4runner and Tacoma seem to run along complementary lines.
I think people fetishize the V8 because in their minds V8=Performance, which is a holdover from the old "muscle car" days of the 60's. What they don't seem to understand is that back in the old days of low-tech pushrod engines you NEEDED 8 cylinders to get decent performance, but that's no longer true (and there are modern V6 engines that would smoke those old "muscle" V8's anyway - it's just the march of technology.)
Who cares how many cylinders it has? Unless you're 16 years old and all you want is "bragging rights" the issue should be how much HP and Torque does it make, not how many spark plugs does it have.

Toyota also used to offer a manual transmission in the 4runner but we'll never see that again either.

Thats pretty much it....I mean dont get me wong of course I would love a V8 that got 23mpg's while making 375hp and weighed as much as a v6 lol. But its not gong to happen. Hopefully the direct AND port injection design brings the benefits of DI but without the manifold clogging headaches it causes. Also am I the only one that HATES the steering wheel design. the two bottom spokes are designed in a way that really makes it hard for me to find that sweet spot of relaxation while holding the wheel. IDK if that makes sense or not but im just not a fan of it lol. Also a infotainment/hvac unit not designed in the early 2000's would be nice.

Very true! I had one of the 4.7 V8 Dakotas, and the 4.0 V6 in my 4R is more powerful. Even the 5.9 V8 in the Dodge trucks of that time were only what, 250 hp? Torque was better in both than the V6 though... I'm guessing that's what most people miss in a "truck" and why they lament the demise of the V8. While both move equally well once at speed, the V8's genarally seem to get mass moving from a stop easier than V6's do.
We used to be able to buy Land Cruisers and LX up here in Canuckistan too.
Now we only get the LX. If you're willing to pay $80K, you're probably willing to pay $80K, you're probably willing to pay $100K.....

yes they did, but then realized why GX470 sales sucked, same vehicle basically for 10-20k less in the 4runner.
big selling point for me when I bought my 2004 Sport SE v8 vs a GX470.
plus the profit margin is way bigger on a lexus than a 4runner. drop the v8 in the 4runner and drop the v6 in the GX series. win all around for Toyota.

I think at this point I'd rather have an engine similar to the ford ecoboost 3.5, heck, even the 2.7 smokes the 4.0 we've got. Pass on the v8. That 3.5 ecoboost has got some serious nads.
All of the websites (Edmunds/KBB etc) seem to indicate 2016 4runner will come with optional V8. I had a 4th gen 2006 V8 limited and loved it. Unfortunately it was wrecked in an accident.
MPG (mixed) with the V8 I had was 19 but still had the power and torque to tow. It will be interesting to see if they do offer the V8 and if so, I'd buy it in a minute over the Sequoia. I don't always need the room the Sequoia has nor the $60K price tag all decked out.
