Any members that work sales for a Dealership?

So, I have been working a deal for a 2011 Trail with kdss/nav-JBl. Put a 500$ deposit down so they don't sell the vehicle on me.

So the problem, I'm stationed overseas (the Netherlands) so they had to mail all the forms to me to sign. I got them today and looking them over and boy are they trying to pull a fast one over on me.

They offered me an OTD price of 38980 + TTL, which I'm ok with. Since I'm under orders to California from the military I can get the sales tax for Iowa which is only 5%. I'm looking at the total price on the vehicle and they have it down as almost 48,000 dollars and they added WA state taxes to it which is 9.6% so I would get raped on that.

I'm willing to lose my deposit if I can find a reputable dealer. I'm not going to get scammed. This guy really had me thinking he was bending over backwards for me... fool me once.

So if anyone on here works for a dealer or can recommend a salesman. I don't care about the color you have on your lot or can get. All I care about is KDSS and possibly NAV (my wife wants it).

I will travel wherever to pick it up and drive it to my next duty station.

Thanks for reading this!

Have you thought about trying one of the online auto purchasing programs? Something like truecar or the American Express program?

I would contact the sales person again to clarify what was previously agreed upon. Next step would be the manager. I've seen cases where the finance people screw things up because either the sales guy didn't relay all the right info or the finance ppl are trying to make a quick buck by adding unneeded options. From your post, it sounds like a simple mistake on which tax to charge. The finance person who did the paperwork may not understand how to properly charge tax for US military personnel.

I would give it one more go since you've already invested the time to find what you wanted. If they still try to jack the price up, then look for another vendor.

Another thing to remember. 2012 4Runner's have the option of Entune/Nav/8 speakers OR Nav/15 speaker JBL/No Entune. You'll have to decide two things:
1) Do you want Entune and can live with 8 speakers? or
2) You want the 15 speaker JBL system w/ Nav and don't care about Entune.

It's one or the other since the Nav/JBL option (~$1500 msrp) doesn't have Entune.

FYI, I'm nearly certain there is a member (on the 5G forum) who is a Toyota sales guy. I want to say he's from the South Central U.S., but that's ??

Someone on here will likely remember who he is, and post up.

EDIT: If you really find out this dealer is f*** with you, post up who it is, so we know. IMO this would be pretty despicable behaviour towards a service member.

Yeah I remember seeing posts from that guy, but I'm drawing a blank as well.

I want to say he was from Arkansas or Alabama or something.

Oh, I'm pretty sure they are trying to pull one over on me. Biggest tell would be that the monthly payment after my 8k down payment was supposed to be around 500. Then on the documentation they want me to sign its 621$ a month.

Yeah, like I'm not going to notice that.

I emailed them and told them if they can fix the paperwork and overnight it to my parents (shhh gonna have my mom sign the docs for me :P ) that there is no harm no foul. At least that way I don't lose out on my 500$ deposit.

Thanks for your help guys.

The dealer I was working with contacted me and said that he will have the sales manager redo the paperwork.

If I'm not satisfied this time.

USAA car buying services have found me about 5 dealership around Chicago that have Trails, with Nav/Entune but no KDSS and they are all chomping at the bit to get a sale. :driving:

I tried USAA, but most of the dealerships near where my family is don't carry Trails since they live in the midwest.

I went through USAA after being scammed by the first dealer we tried. A new dealer contacted me within an hour and had an exact match located and delivered 3 days later. They also honored the USAA price even though there were extra options I hadn't specified in the original quote.

I live in Louisiana and bought mine in Boston, Massachusetts...They knew I was from out of state. All I payed for was the price of the vehicle--no tax, no registration. When I got home, I went to a title place and payed my state taxes and registration fee. I did all my negotiations over the phone and had a invoice with everything on it including the deposit with the manager signature + mine. I made sure the vin was there and matched the 4Runner I saw on the dealer site + Toyota's site. If they would have sold it after I traveled 1700 miles I would have raised major hell at the dealership....Luckily everything when very smoothly. I don't think just paying a $500 deposit without good paperwork is good enough...

I am a Finance Mgr at Hiland Toyota in Moline, IL. Which is 5mi from IA. I actually live in IA. Trails are hard to come by in the midwest. I just did a search in a 350mi radius and it looks like there are only 2 on the ground and neither of them have kdss. There are a total of six allocated all with kdss and entune due to hit the dealers within the next month. Since you are in the military you would qualify for a $500 military rebate and there is a program right now, called "Welcome Home", through the 5th of march that you could qualify for 1.9% financing for 60mos. Also since you are in the military you can license and title it in any state you want. Your right about the 5% sales tax in IA. If you want I could probably help in terms of getting one. As far as your deposit, in IA and IL, by law the dealer cannot keep your deposit. In reguards to the $48000, you might be reading the contract where it states in the "Truth in Lending" box that that is how much you will have paid for the the 4runner after tax title license and finance charges, which would probably pretty close. Would not be uncommon to have $5000 to $7000 worth of finance charges over say 72mos.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, KDSS isn't happening in the midwest. That is ok though. I will just make up for it with a quality lift and tires.

I found a dealer in IL that had a 2012 Shorline Blue TE with Entune. The dealer threw in running boards for free. Then added another 500$ on top of that to match the 1000$ military discount that people on the west coast get. I got the 1.9% financing also. Got it for a great price too :)

I did end up getting my deposit back from the dealership in Seattle no problem. Also I checked out the two contracts. The same box that had the 48k in it from Seattle had 39k in it from the IL dealership.
