My girlfriend and I picked up our first mountains bikes this weekend. Nothing crazy, just some entry level bikes that we got for a decent price. GT Backwoods Comp for me and a Diamondback Lux Sport for her. Been riding on pavement for years, not sure why it took me so long to get on the trail. Went riding all weekend and loving it so far.

The chance of my MTB race a month from today is getting less and less likely. It rained all of May so there was very little dirt. Then we had family in town staying wit us for about 10 days so I didn't even get a workout in. They left Sunday so I got a long ride in, here's the result...

Leg, forearm, and sholder. Here's another week off the bike :(

Barely a flesh wound. Not like it took your arm off. Get back on the bike. :)

Just realized it has been almost 15 years since my last top 3 finish in a sponsored race. My first win was 20 years ago on a rigid bike (and yes, I got made fun of even then, but I didn't have any money-LBS donated me the rigid bike). My first rigid bike weighs more than my full suspension does now-Haha. My how times have changed. My current bikes are much more comfortable, and I am a lot slower and cautious.

Here's my faithful steed, the 2011 Trek Scratch 9. Luckily for me, I used to work at a bicycle shop and I learned a ton during my time there. Not to mention the discounts don't hurt ;)

If any of you are in the South Bay Area (San Jose area) shoot me a message and we can ride sometime!

Hi fellows 4runner,
I am trying to get back into mountain bike after 15yrs off. I am looking and thinking about getting an used 2008 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp

2008 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp - New and Used Bike Value

The seller asked for $800. Is it a good buy? I will take a look at it in couple days. For the price range $800-$1000, what other used bikes should I look at?

Personally?
I wouldn't give $300 for it. It's a nice bike that had nice components on it 7 years ago. A lot has changed in 7 years! Also it's a 26 and most now ride 29. For $800-$1000 you can get a brand new hard tail entry level bike, you can step up and get last year's rental bike from an outfitter or you can get 3-4 year old 29'er for that money. I have no clue what terrain you plan on riding or the duration. If you are getting back in it casually or if you are going to go big. For mild trails a hardtail or even a carbon fork rigid is fine in a 1X11. If you are going to ride rocks with big drops then a FS is the way to go. I personally ride hard tail even on the rocky stuff.

Oh, make sure you check head tube angles too! Twitchy and fast versus not as fast and not so twitchy which is better for the hard pack. Comfort versus speed lol.

Wife and I are just getting into MB... I used to ride all the time as a kid, but it was all in town, no offroad stuff, so it's all new to me too. The wife, try as she might, has never been a well coordinated athlete.

That said, we got a pair of entry level FS bikes from Diamondback. We don't ride anything too hard core, and I doubt the wife ever will - and who am I kidding, at 40 I won't either. Moderate/Intermediate will likely be my peak.

Anyway, we took them out last weekend to Hill Country State Natural Park near Bandera, TX. Rode easy trail 1 from the "bottle opener" Parking lot (which was mostly twin track, varied between grass/dirt/rock) almost up to the Wilderness Camp area, the went back the same way to trail 5A. We took 5A (a more difficult single track trail) up to the scenic overlook. I could have rode it, but the wife couldn't. She was pooped, and after a break to eat a Cliff bar walked her bike up to the overlook (I walked mine with her). But I was pretty proud of her for riding the whole trail back down.

I've read this park is not too challenging for seasoned riders, but for beginner up to intermediate riders seems to be a good choice. It is shared trails between Hikers/Bikers/Horse riders. If you go and need a place to stay, I highly recommend the West 1077 Guest Ranch, which backs up to the park. Their breakfast and lunch are very good (they don't serve an evening meal), facilities are clean and well kept, and the owners are good people.

Edited: Removed bike pics because they were HUGE. You can look up Diamondback Recoil 29 in google images if you want to see what we ride. Mine is gray, hers is white.

Just picked up a new to me 2012 Pivot Mach 5.7 with full xt driveline, Speed Dream built custom wheels with Chris King hubs running a 27.5 up front for improved rollover and plenty other goodies. I originally wanted to go with a 27.5 full suspension bike but with the prices for them still on the steep side I was going go have to wait a while. Then I happened to find this bike for a good deal and had to pull the trigger. I don't think having 26in tires hurts much though considering this bike has nearly 6in of travel and in my experience is just as fast climbing and even faster in some situations than my 29er hard tail. I'm hoping to do a race or two when I get back home to Colorado although I know the season will be winding down by then.
Anyway here's a pic while riding Irish Hills in San Luis Obispo a couple days ago.<a href="http://s853.photobucket.com/user/smokin9812valve/media/20150702_120542_1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab91/smokin9812valve/20150702_120542_1.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20150702_120542_1.jpg"/></a>

Well my 4th of July race didn't happen. Part of the reason we signed up for that specific race is because they have a no questions asked refund/cancellation policy. We signed up with about 2 months to train. It rained every day for a month (which is NOT normal here), then we had in-laws in town for a week, the day they left I had a mountain bike crash and it took a couple weeks for the skin to grow back and the scabs to stop bleeding. We were not prepared for a race that hard. I wanted to change it and do the relay (we each do one loop) but my wife wasn't feeling ready for it so we cancelled and got a refund.

Since our calendar opened up for the 4th of July my wife and I decided we'd spend the day getting high.

We road single track on the Colorado Trail from the top of the Kenosha Pass up through the Pike National Forest until we got above tree line. We topped out at the 12,000 foot summit where the Colorado Trail meets the Georgia Pass. Then we took the Jefferson Trail back down. The temp was in the 90's at home and we got to play in the snow in the high country. It was hot and sunny, and cold and windy, there were stream crossings, snow fields, and it was hard to breath. The trail wasn't overly technical or overly steep but the combination of the two that made it a hard ride, then you add in the altitude and it ended one of, if not the most, physically demanding rides I've ever done. For only being a 23 mile ride with 3,800 feet of elevation gain I was completely wiped. I didn't eat as much as I should have and I was hurting pretty bad and starting to bonk around mile 20. It probably didn't help that I was physically hurting after an incident with a tree. A random branch poked straight into one of the vents on my helmet and the chin strap grabbed me around the throat. I was brought to a dead stop by my head. I can't say that has ever happened to me before, luckily it was on a climb so I wasn't going all that fast but I felt that one in my neck and upper back none the less. Overall it was a pretty epic ride

It's not quite a mountain bike ride but it was a bike ride on a mountain...

My wife and I took our bikes with the lowest gearing (I took my cyclocross bike and she took her carbon hardtail - both are 3x10) and we did the Mount Evans road ride today. We parked off the main road at Echo Lake where Mount Evans Road starts. We started from 10,600 feet and started climbing. We started in shorts and t-shirts, the higher up you got the colder it got. Breathing started to become pretty taxing around 13,250-13,500 feet. We kept adding clothes as we went. I was in thick wool socks, a winter hat under my helmet, coat, gloves, and my fingers were still numb - it was cold and windy. Having to breath that heavy up that high I had to curl my lips around my teeth at times because the cold air literally hurt when you're huffing and puffing like that. It started to snow on us but it only lasted for 10-15 minutes. The road is under construction where they are reinforcing, rebuilding, and repaving a cliff edge so the entire road was closed to cars. Other than the shit loads of mountain goats we saw and a handful of other bikers we pretty much had the mountain to ourselves. We hit the turn around on the highest paved road in North America at the 14,130 foot summit . It's pretty insane being thousands of feet above tree line.

Starting at Echo Lake, heading to the peak in the clearing
