Any way to make Homelink ONLY work when key is on?

This has been an interesting thread. Something I never gave a thought to.

To those reading who have to leave their car out, this would concern me.

I believe I'd deprogram homelink and get a small handheld opener and hide it somewhere ... even if someone breaks into your car assuming they won't spend much time looking.

'Ordinary' garage door openers can be removed from the vehicle when parked in the driveway.

SR5 Premium do come with Homelink..

Would it erase homelink memory. That would be a pain to deal with. I'd like to disable it as well when the car is off.

I've wired a handful of older Gentex mirrors with auto dimming + homelink in my vehicles to get those functions. Just identify which of the wires powers up the homelink, snip it, and reconnect it with a ACC power source instead of a constant hot, but I'm not sure what else is attached to the 5th gen units and wiring for security. You might be disrupting something as the other poster have said.

.. and the few that I've used kept the garage opener codes even after unplugged and removed. So the homelink board must use a different power source for code storage.

Can the Homelink now be activated with the vehicle not running/ignition off?

I’m able to use the homelink buttons on all 3 of my Toyotas without the key turned on. It’s a concern to me as well but I can lock the garage openers so they only open from the inside controllers on the wall and don’t respond to any of the wireless controllers or Homelink. I also wish they only worked with the ignition on.

I've disconnected my battery multiple times and never lost my Homelink settings so it should be safe to put it on a switched power connection. I may give it a shot next time I'm up in the console

Mine doesn't work without the key on. Sometimes I'd like it to, but I get why it doesn't and in the end I'm glad that it doesn't. Not sure why some would and some wouldn't though. Mine is 16 TE if it makes a difference.

In my understanding the homelink board and standard garage door remotes have a hardcoded "code"(I suppose more like algorithm that sends rolling codes) on a EEPROM type chip. When you program it into your garage door opener "motor" unit, its the opener unit that "learns" the code of the remote/homelink(and basically learns to trust it). So it should work unless you clear the actual memory on the opener unit, or in some cases program enough new remotes in to where that remote/homelink falls off(FIFO with some number such as 4 or 5 programmable remote memory).

This is a factory OEM unit. I hate to have to re-wire it. Maybe i'll just program it to #3 to keep the really dumb bad guys out.

There are a few things I've seen that make me wonder if there are variances among the line up. Completely not related, but I was thinking of switching to Switchback LEDs in the front end and have seen a few videos where it says and shows them being used in the running/parking light mode. When I am in that mode the DRLs are on as well, but in the videos they weren't.
I know in my old Chevy that when you switched to camper mirrors that hosed up the driver memory, well to be fair the driver memory worked it just moved the mirrors into no-man's land. But apparently the dealer could flash the computer and make the mirrors not move... my round about point is I wonder if there is something that can be done like that for homelink.

2017 TRD ORP the Homelink works with key off. Gunna de=program mine. Useless for anyone that parks outside quite a bit.

We need to try this again. What happens if you open the door ? Does it activate the home link ?

Might be easier to handle this from the garage door opener instead of the 4Runner. Put the opener on a switched circuit and just switch it off when home.

Yeah, my Mercedes doesn't work with the ignition off.

since getting my android/CarPlay T9 head unit. I cleared out my oem home link. I opted to use myQ on the T9 since I already have it on my smart phone.

now I use use the app on the HU to open/close the garage. I set it up to auto launch after starting the car. This way it appears automatically for me to have the option to close the garage. But usually when I leave the house, I hit the wall switch in the garage and walk over the sensor.

No more worrying about someone breaking 4runner window if I park outside and trying to open the garage.

If you lock your door it is not active. Try locking someone in and have them try to use the button after the doors are locked, it shouldn't work per the way the security feature is designed.

It should also go inactive after a short amount of time, even if you leave your door unlocked, but closed with no activity in the truck.
