So I have the Homelink programmed on my 17 SR5, works fine. However, it works even with the key off. Is there a way to make it only work when the key is in the on position for added security? I don't like the idea of someone being able to open the garage door if my car is parked outside.
Any way to make Homelink ONLY work when key is on?

That was his point. He only wants it to work when the ACC or car is on so no one can break in to his car and then access his garage...
I'm sure it can be done, you'd have to look at the wiring diagram.
Correct, I was hoping there was a way to program it. One of our cars(I think Subaru?) had a way to program it with some turns of the key and pushes of the button.

most cars dont have this work without the key to prevent people from breaking in and opening the garage door.
Are you sure it still works after you
1. turn off car
2. open the door
3. close the door
4. lock the car?
its like our windows still work after you remove the key but stop once you open the door.
Yep, verified. I rolled the window down so I could reach in. I turn off the car, still works. Open the door, still works. Close the door, still works. Lock the car, still works. Double tap lock, still works. I couldn't get it to not work.
Additionally I took it to the dealer on Friday for first service, I asked 2 of the service writers about this, and they had no idea. One said he bought the same car for his wife and when I mentioned this he actually looked concerned as well. Asked the guy that performed the service and he had no idea either.

I'd bet a buck the OPs Homelink was installed by an accessory shop used by the dealer he got his 4R from or he bought it used, having been setup as I just described.

My factory installed homelink in my 4runner and the one factory installed on the Avalon I used to own is on all the time regardless of if the key fob in near or not on my keyless 4runner or if the key was not in the ignition on the old Avalon. Mine is always in the garage so it makes no difference to me.

This has been discussed before, and I think that the consensus was that it is wired through the interior dome light, if I remember correctly.
Such a stupid implementation by Toyota, huge security risk to all of us who use Homelink. I won't park my car in the driveway overnight because of it.

Same as your ordinary garage door openers, no? That's why I only use the keypad and never leave one in my vehicle. I had someone break into my car that was parked outside. Woke up to the garage door opening at 1AM and scared the bejesus out of me. Luckily they scared themselves too when the door opened and took off.

Mine doesn't work without the key on. Sometimes I'd like it to, but I get why it doesn't and in the end I'm glad that it doesn't. Not sure why some would and some wouldn't though. Mine is 16 TE if it makes a difference.

2014 TEP and mine has always worked (as well) with car off and locked. (Easy to do... just turn the car off and lock yourself in it for 5-10 mins... then test). It is also why I very seldom park mine outside of the garage overnight.
Perhaps I’ve never given it enough time.... but every other test I’ve ran (unlocked and key out, been sitting for hours, etc) it’s always worked. So I just assumed it worked if someone bashed my window in and pushed it too.

Hey Phil,
I'm looking at the "Telematics" wiring diagram and it appears that putting this circuit on an intermittent electrical feed would interfere with the anti-theft/Low-jack feature; which is designed to be "HOT AT ALL TIMES" so the vehicle can be tracked when off! ...see below:
That's my ONLY concern with using an intermittent circuit with the Home-link feature! Hope this helps; "Best to you and loved ones",

I am pretty sure that if the homelink loses power for very long it also loses the memory for the garage door. When I changed the battery in my old Avalon I lost the garage door settings and had to reprogram. Maybe it is different now.

I get that but, my point was that if you disconnect the 'HOT AT ALL TIMES' power source that serves the "Telematics" module; which was the OP's original question, then you'll render the "low-jack" Safety Connect system feature effectively invisible if the vehicle is ever stolen. So the truck will disappear from the theft recovery system network's radar! Best,
