They want 80 grand for that? I think the Hemi jeep is worth more than that Icon. however I'd take a Bronco with the 351 over both of them but thats just me. I did however read in diesel power mag that they also offer a diesel engine only I don't remember the details

This thing looks pretty awesome...although I'd like to see it run some trails before I shell out $80k!

FOXNews.com - Review: 2010 Icon CJ3B

cmon! someone has to be the guinea pig! what happened!?? Ive never seen you so shy to drop money! :biggrin2:

yeah, I would rather have something like that than some jeep even modded that everyone and their mom drives....

I mean seriously, 3/4 of the Rubicons in town here I can tell will never hit a dirt road let alone a trail. Thats one reason I prefer the 4runner, there are lots around, but not many modded to go offroad. (of course we are kinda changing that by helping so many people mod their 4runners, Last weekend SteezeMcqueen put a lift in a 5th gen. and the owner plans to take it 4wheelin!)

Ok, 3/4 of Rubicons never see dirt? If this stat is even true, then how is it different than 4runner Trail? Or Land Cruiser? For me, i don't care whether it is common or not as long as it does its job well. Isn't that what matters the most to a seasoned off-roader?

Do you read before you comment??

I said "HERE IN TOWN" and there are a ton of Rubicons in my area, and you can tell by the drivers and jeeps themselves, that they have and never will go off road,

and the difference is you dont buy an old Landcruiser FJ unless your gonna either show it or take it offroad. people that buy FJ's know what they are buying,

The fact that the Rubicons are now a dime a dozen means they are far from original and the fact that they arent making it off road indicates that the people that are buying them dont have a clue how capapble they are offroad.

my point was that you show absolutely no originality by buying a Rubicon, you show no originality buying a 4runner, but a modded 4runner is far more original and creative than a modded jeep.

for example your former wheeling rig is far more original than a Jeep Rubicon, whether or not it is more capable, didnt seem to matter does it? just like, Im not concerned that my 4runner is more capable than a Rubicon, it serves my purposes needs and catches far more eyes than if I was in Rubicon.

So, to recap for those that dont read the whole post, my point was that the new Icon is by far a much more original/creative choice to go wheeling in or even DD than for example a Jeep Rubicon which may or may not be more capable

Maybe it's my age (35), but originality is not all that great. It is actually one of the main reason why i sold my G...it attracts too much attention when in public...and not all attention is good (for family safety). In fact, in 2004, when i was shopping for my next SUV, my top 3 at the time: GX470 KDSS, G500, and Rubicon, in no specific order. Unfortunately, in 2004, the Rubicon (TJ-based) did not come with ABS, which is one of my requirement. GX was not all that different (in capability) than my 2002 4runner. IF the current Rubicon was available back then, then i would have gotten it in a heartbeat...in fact, if the 2010 4runner Trail was available in 2004, then i would have gotten it before the Rubicon.

For a similar reason (lack of originality), this is why i own a $42,000 minivan and not a Lexus RX350...it blends nicely in a Walmart parking lot. I used to be paranoid with my Mercedes...it got annoying afterawhile.

In other words, i rather buy something that is capable, than something that is original. And i don't care if soccer moms drive it. Oh yeah, cheap to maintain is great also.

Fair enough.. I tend to be completely the opposite, I wanted to mod a Dodge Lancer when i was 16 rather than buy a Dodge Duster, I wanted to put a civic Si engine in my 88 prelude when i was 18, I have a jailbroken Iphone cuz I cant stand having the same icons as everyone else on the planet. In fact, i wouldnt even take someone elses icon pack and use it, i took the icons i wanted from about 5 different packs then combined them with ones I pulled from my Mac etc.

For me, for things I use everyday I like to have something not everyone has, my mods on my phone and my mods on my 4runner suit my needs alone. I didnt do it to cater to anyone or what anyone else likes.

I kinda understand what you mean about some public places though... for the first time that I have driven to a Rockies game, I didnt take my truck downtown. I didnt want to park it in a parking lot in an urban area (very nice, clean downtown by the way) and take the chance of someone with a sawzall walking away with my cat converter... with the Tire on top Im sitting about 7.5 feet high and that attention is not good when people know Im not gonna be back to my truck for 3-4 hrs...

but the Originality of something like an Icon is not one that is going to be even noticed by your normal everyday Joe. its gonna be appreciated more by auto enthusiasts and if it proves to have the offroad prowess it looks like it was designed for, then also the offroad crowd. I dont see it attracting negative attention in a grocery store parking lot. and by negative attention, I simply mean, attention from people that you DONT want looking at your car LOL

edit: oh, and I prefer Target, Walmart I dont like waiting in 3 hr lines for 3 things! :)

Yeah, i can see your points. I like originality too...but as long as it does not attract attention. I don't mind sleeper cars...bland on the outside but a big ass turbo inside. Actually, my old Mercedes G500 was a "sleeper" off-road strangely enough. Everyone knew how much it costs, everyone knew what celeb drove it, but few knew what it can do off-road. My G also had minimal mods that won't be notice by public (slightly bigger 32" AT tires, ordinary looking sliders). So, people were shocked when they saw what it could do off-road. :D I think that is what attracts me to the 2010 4runner Trail...it looks like other 4runners, but it has neat stuff underneath to make it very capable...from reading, it looks like Toyota improved the small stuff that was deficient in the 4th gen.

As for the Icon, the problem i have with it is the price. I am willing only to pay so much for originality before it becomes totally insane! $80k for that?! It may not look special...but then, underneath it ain't that special either, at least from what the article reads. I rather get a Rubicon and modify it from there...and have a lot more safety features (airbags for instance!). Due to the lack of safety features, forget about driving to another state, can you even drive this thing across the state to an off-road park?? I would not...hell, would not trust it with my family's safety! It has not been tested by anyone for safety. How do you even know how this thing handles in an emergency situation? All of these uncertainty for $80,000??!! No thanks. (And yeah, if you think that i am a chicken shit, then yeah, you're right! :D )

Walmart is the place to be. Remember, Target is a FRENCH company. The ONLY French stuff that i buy is tires...damn it, those Michelin bas****s make high quality stuff! :( I am starting to change though...Bridgestone tires are getting better. (Goodyear is still way behind IMO.) In addition, Walmart is so cheap to shop...you just can't go wrong shopping there! In Texas at least, Walmart has self-checkout lanes, which is pretty fast!

I just thought it was cool somebody was devoting so much time to designing and building an vehicle 100% devoted to off roading...

Target was founded and always based in the US, in Minneapolis, to be precise. It is presently a publicly traded company listed on the NYSE. Thus, many of its owners may indeed be French, but the officers, board, etc are all Americans.

I have always had horrendous luck with checkout lanes in WalMart, though my wait times have recently (~3 visits over the last 2 years or so) been averaging under 15 minutes. I prefer the overall experience at Target for several reasons.

Not even sure who started the Target/Walmart debate, but that's my $.02 on that subject. More to come on the originality debate during lunch break.

That's not for me. I would go with an '80's Toyota pickup and take off some body panels to achieve the same effect. Or, I could just pick up a '70's LC (short wheelbase) and have a similar vehicle for MUCH less, and likely more reliability, especially with some judicious parts replacement.

I like the practicality of a vehicle as well, which is why I also have a minivan and love it. My wife and I agreed to share my beloved 4Runner and our Odyssey when I got back from my week long business trip, but by the time I got back, she said, "OK, you can keep the 4Runner, I'll drive this every day." and she has fallen completely in love with the utility of the Odyssey.
