Anybody thinking of selling of getting a new vehicle b/c of gas prices?

I filled up my gas tank today and it was a $60 charge. I fill up my 4runner an average of 5-6 times a month......so you guys do the math. I spend a lot of money on gas....

I'm curious if any of you guys are thinking about getting a vehicle with better mileage or a hybrid.

Despite the heavy gas prices, I've decided that I AM NOT going to sell my 4runner:beer:

My 2004 4runner Sport is paid off, and there is something to be said for a reliable vehicle like this one. Also, I would actually loose money if I got a vehicle with better gas mileage b/c of the depreciation. On top of that I love driving it, and there is nothing else out there that I really like as much as the 4runner.

Most important reason. I got my Corolla not because of gas prices, but because i wanted to save miles on my baby.

poor gas mileage seems to be the only negative about the truck but that was already known when I bought it. great reliability, smooth/powerful engine, cheap to insure, safety, great looks, the positives go on and on. yeah, I think I'll keep it! :bigok:

Not getting rid of the 4Runner, but I did buy a motorcycle. It will take me a few years of gas savings to recoup the cost of the motorcycle/gear/insuarance etc, but the time I save being able to use the HOV lanes on the bike makes up for it. Also it is just damn fun riding!!

I've toyed with the idea but knowing that I'll own it next year tells me to hang on to it. Setting aside the money I'd loose, when you do a comparison test to another vehicle that gets 25/31, the savings is only 30-40 dollars per fill up. So, I can understand someone filling up 3-4 times/month.

I only fill up once or twice a month since my commute is less 6 miles each way. Besides, I get reinburst for business travel... so i'll be keeping the runner for a while.

I do want to get one of those cool lookings GTI's.....:dancin:

Nope it hasn't crossed my mind. Company pays for my gas and the wife works from home. Had our 06 V8 for 2 weeks now and have only filled it up once.

As of todays prices I use 100.00 per week in fuel , and would'nt even consider selling the 4R. I drive alot but love the truck.

As far as gas milage I guess I don't know what everyone complains about. I think the gas milage is more than acceptable and on a V8 model better than almost everything out there in its class.

Having a V8 that pulls 16-17 mpg.consistantly ( not going by the comp. I figure the old fashioned way ) in the city with hard stop and go drivng and a lead foot I happier than a pig in chit !!

buying the V8 in this truck was the best decision I ever made , even if some of the V6 guys have better milage.

I'm not too concerned about the gas prices since my 4runner is a weekend driver. My daily driver is a 2001 Honda Civic that gets between 36 to 40MPG. However, my fiancee has been driving the 4runner more often than her own car But I can't complain, because she's the one who fills the tank:biggrin2:

I've been debating on whether or not to park the 4Runner and pick up a 4cylinder for my wife to drive around and save gas. Right now I drive her Celica about 60 miles a day to save $ and mileage but its still not helping.

There are other reasons i was thinking about getting rid of the 4Runner but the overall cost of gas nowadays may be the end all factor.

I agree with others that there are way too many positive things about the 4Runner, such that the only negative is the gas mileage.
I have a short commute, so I'm only using about 5 gallons a week going back and forth to work. That makes the gas mileage a non-issue. A couple of years ago, I had a job that was a lot father away and I burned 5 gallons a day! In that scenario, I probably would not have bought the 4Runner, opting instead for maybe a Highlander or something else that's AWD with better fuel economy.

I traded in my Mustang GT because I was getting 200 miles on $40 worth of gas and my insurance was $1100 every 6 months (25yo, crystal clear record). I got the 4Runner, insurance went down to $600 every 6 months, and I get about 425 miles on $60. Also, I am interviewing with another job that is only 4 miles away from my house instead of my driving 13 to my current job. So, long story short, by getting the 4Runner i am saving on gas and insurance.

I use my VW Golf for commuting to work and around town driving from April to December. My 4Runner is used for weekend towing and winter driving. The Golf's 28-30 mpg for work and 35-40 on the highway helps balance out the 4Runner's lower mileage.

I would consider selling/trading the 4Runner when Toyota puts a Diesel engine in the 4Runner. Hopefully, that will happen in the not too distant future. With the new, larger, Tundra crew cab coming out many truely believe that Toyota simply must put a diesel in this truck for it to compete in that segement. After that happens, maybe that diesel will find it's way into the 4Runner.

Time will tell if/when a diesel engine becomes a reality in Toyota vehicles sold in the USA. Hopefully Toyota "moves forward" and puts diesel engines in some of their vehicles.

So far I can deal with the prices but if we see $5 a gallon I'd consider parking the Runner for a cheap gas saving Subi or something but until them I'll enjoy my truck on a daily basis.

You're right. In addition, don't forget about the additional car insurance. The main reason why I got my Corolla is to cut down on the miles on my G500. I drive at least 70 miles (round trip) to work...many times 140 miles. This will add unnecessarily wear & tear on my G.

I did

I traded my Nissan Titan in for the 4runner. I got between 8-10 mpg. My truck had 6" lifted with 35" Toyo M/T tires, fiber glass bed cover and other stuffs. I paid around $500/month for gas.

I have not calculate the gas $ for the 4runner yet but I feel lots better at the pump.

Sorry but not on the street. I missed my Titan. It has lots more room and I can seat up high. Well!! you can't have everything...

Bought mine half a year ago, I won't sell it. Maybe let it sit a bit more. I'll take a huge depreciation hit that could be spent on gas.

not at all. Ha, if anything I looked for trading my V6 in and getting a V8 (which I ended up doing) and just drive my integra to/from work.

In in the end the runner will get my up the mountains, tow whatever I hook up to it, and haul whatever I need to regardless of gas. But I only drive it on the weekends. I think it when the 4Runner is you DD you really feel the gas crunch.

I leased my '05 4x4 SR5 4Runner for three years, and will turn it back in when January of 2008 rolls around. I have a 2002 Sentra that I have owned since new and it is already paid for - so that is my 'commuting' vehicle.

My 4Runner is primarily for weekend usage and trips, vacations, hauling, etc. As of yet, the gas is expensive for it (16 to 19 mpg) when compared to the Sentra (27 to 32 mpg).....but it does okay for what it is.

I have the option to buy it at lease's end, but probably will not if fuel prices remain so high. I might consider a smaller SUV (RAV-4, CR-V, etc., etc.) with a 4-cylinder engine - or maybe a Camry or other mid-size sedan. My Sentra is pushing 80k, but still runs great; so I'll keep it for awhile.

Insurance is cheap (relatively) because I have two cars and only one driver (myself). For full coverage on both the 4Runner and Sentra, I still get by with a bit less than a thousand dollars a year.

I'm "stuck" with the 4Runner until the end of my lease, but I have no regrets and am very happy with my choice in buying it. I live 21 miles from my job, so I may drive it once a week to work. I'd be forking out about $80 every week for fuel if I drove it daily.
