I first heard about Steamshovel Trail from a article that I can no longer find that was titled something along the lines of "Reader Picks - Best 4x4 Trails By State", and it was the only NV trail that wasn't down by Vegas.
All reports mention "waterfalls" at one point on the trail. Some people report that it's not that difficult at all and most stock vehicles can handle it. Another says that even a rig on 35's locked front and rear can't make it without winching, and another says they don't recommend short base vehicles because his buddy's Bronco II flipped going DOWN the waterfalls. There are also reports on ATV forums about the trail as well. It may just be that it depends on what end of the trail you start on. I also know there are some very difficult King of Hammers style side trails, so I'm not sure if some people are talking about those.
So is anyone one familiar with this trail? I'm looking at you [MENTION=118209]Ron4RNevada[/MENTION] since it's out past Fallon.
There isn't much info on it, but it's well known enough that a Google search provides a decent amount of results dating back over 10 years. Unfortunatey most of them lack information or are forum posts organizing a trail run. I don't mind an exploratory trip, but it's a long enough drive from my house to the trailhead that I don't wanna get to the first obstacle (the waterfalls) and find out I'm SOL without a winch.
