Anyone been through Lippincott in DV this season?

My planned route takes me from Ubehebe Crater south to The Racetrack, then through Lippincott to Saline Valley Rd and out the north pass. I was reading a "Death Valley Road Conditions" Facebook page, and one person said they were in a stock GX460 and it was "easy" with a spotter on the rocky parts. Yet another guy says he has Tacoma TRD and he nearly shit his pants at a few spots because it got so narrow. FWIW it sounded like he didn't have to much wheeling experience, which is why I'm questioning his review, but I'm gonna be in a full size. Has anyone been up there this season who's seen it firsthand?

Death Valley

Just did that a few weeks ago - going opposite direction (up from Saline). Lippincott is tight in spots with steep drop off to be sure but me (15 trail) and my buddy in an 80s LC had no problems. Washboard from crater to racetrack is MISERABLE. Hunter pass had too much snow to get over back then but was beautiful. Trail over mountains from Eureka sand dunes south down to springs and then Saline was fun. Mines above campsites near racetrack are definitely worth exploring.

Don't worry about Lippincott

It's been my experience that many people exaggerate how bad Lippincott really is. I mean, it IS a narrow road with a big drop, and sometimes the highest gully crossing is a bit messed up, but there usually aren't any off-camber rock ledges kind of stuff, like Chicken Rock/Mengel Pass. The most iffy spot, in my 25+ years of visiting the area, are the flats below Lippincott, before Saline Valley Road, where there are a bunch of shallow gullies that can wash out and really mess up the road.

I've read so many opinions about washboard and how to handle it. But fast or slow, that stretch to the Racetrack is genuinely f'd up. Have fun!

I was on Lippincott in January...a Subaru could do it no problem.

The road North from Saline hot springs was rocky, but not difficult; just kinda slow in parts. Steel pass got tight and I used a spotter going down the "waterfalls" and slightly scraped/dented some rear plastic on my stock TRD Pro...but fun and not too difficult (Just the right amount actually.)

Steel Pass in a fullsize...you're gonna be up on the side of some of the waterfalls; it's gonna be a pucker factor being really close to the walls and hoping a tire doesn't slip down (but you didn't need that door anyways, right?).

I do believe I'd call Lippincott a 2 scale and Steel a 3.5, if we're looking at standard ratings (1-5 Scale).

...and the road to the racetrack was washboard, but not bad aired down.

Thanks for the responses. We didn't end up doing Lippincott and just hit Saline Valley from South Pass to North Pass. The passes were cool and a lot of fun, but the washboard through Saline Valley was so bad I almost forgot why I actually like four wheeling. I've been on washboard before, and while it can be annoying typically it's manageable. This, on the other hand, was more like consecutive speed bumps. I swear the washboard was like 3" deep at places. I actually felt like I needed to apologize to my friends for suggesting the route it sucked so bad. 84 miles took us about 6 hours with a lunch break stop. We didn't take Steel Pass/Dedeckera Canyon because I've been through there in my 4R, and I didn't want to run the risk of messing up my Duramax any more than it already was, since it sounded like it was going to rattle apart in Saline Valley. After North Pass we went back to Eureka Dunes from the north and had a great night, so it all worked out in the end.

On a side note, I would suggest checking out Jail Canyon in Panamint Valley for anyone still planning a trip. It's ~5.5 of pretty slow crawling up an alluvial fan and into a canyon that anyone stock 4R can do. My Sierra 2500HD(crew cab/short bed) made it pretty easily and it's only suspension mod is a leveling kit and 33" Duratracs (stopped before the end though cuz it does get a bit gnarly, but my 5th gen would have been fine). You end up at one of the infamous cabins that's actually nice enough to sleep in, but as you pass that if leads up a narrow canyon with tons of mining equipment and structures to check out. Plus it has a spring/creek and lots of trees and plants, which is a pretty rare sight for Death Valley. If you want more info PM me and I can give you directions.
