Anyone do brakes yet on their 5th Gen?

I had my rotors turned and replaced the pads with oem around 15000 miles ago. No issues as of yet. I took pictures for a write up if there isn't one or there is a need. I see no reason to go aftermarket with anything on this car, I always have squeaks and squeals with aftermarket pads. Thats ok on something racey, not my wife's daily.

JD, just go with OEM pads, they are pretty quiet and last pretty long, why mess with perfection? The pads should be easy to chance since we have monoblock fixed calipers, I would try to DIY and save some $$

sorry Bro...planning board tonight, just got back in..

I believe I was around 80,000 when I had them done...turned the rear rotors, new pads(stock ones again) and replaced the front rotors.

$500 and change out the door.

Just bumping this to see what pads/rotors the OP went with and I am also curious if we ever got any type of DIY write up

I have just over 50,000km on my 11 trail and dealer says pads are at about 3mm. They gave me an estimate of about $650 to replace them so I would like to change them myself. Is there anything unique to the 4runner brakes that I should be aware of beforehand or are they basically like any other disc brake setup?

toyota ended up putting new rotors and pads on there for free

if you've done brakes before, the 4runner has one of the easiest brakes to replace pads on.. basically same caliper that the TT Supra have (was on my GS)

I have almost 60,000 miles on the factory brakes, the rotors aren't warped and they still have pad left. They work and feel great...

I tow a boat that has no trailer brakes at least once per week during the warmer months as well!

That makes a damn good argument for replacing with factory pads in my book, and I usually hate factory stuff.

That does make a good argument. I've not owned the 4runner long enough to be satisfied or disappointed with the factory brakes. If these brakes last me 60k miles (or at least 30k the way I drive), you can bet I'll replace with OEM. If they don't, I'll be going to brakeperformance.

15,000mi on pads? that's not something to brag about.. i'm running on 51k on my oem set (i sold the other 4runner that the dealer replaced them)

Curious... I've had a noticeable shimmy since about 22,000 miles. Dealer looked at the issue at 25,000 said no warranty on warped rotors and recommended a brake job. Pads still look fine.

This was on a Cadillac. It was fast and heavy and I drive like a jackass somtimes.

I have purchased rotors from this company in the past too, but not for the 4Runner yet. I found them to be very good quality and did not warp on a vehicle that had warped two previous sets of name brand rotors.

My 4Runner has 67k miles and has lots of pad left, but the front rotors have developed a shimmy after 1 or 2 applications at highway speed especially in warmer weather.

I am thinking about doing the brakes pretty soon, I like the oem pads and plan on ordering some, have not decided yet where to get the rotors. I do not like or want cross drilled or slotted rotors, just a good quality aftermarket product is what I am looking for. I may order from the above company or get a set of the high end Raybestos ones from somewhere else.

I usually do my own brakes on all my vehicles, but as I get older I have on occasion paid to have it done.

they replaced mine because the selling dealer who i bought mine certified from had cut the rotors and they were too thin to cut again so they ate it

I couldn't agree more. I'm at 94,000 miles on my '11 and am finally ready for new front brakes (still have 4mm). I'm going OEM at $300 for new pads and rotors from the stealership. Not much to complain about here. BTW, I too tow all spring, summer, and fall as well. It's only a jetski but have had zero issues with my OEM brakes this far so I see no reason not to replace with factory parts.

Hmmmm... I replaced pads and cut the rotors on mine and it does shimmy a little at stops... I think I might have to purchase new rotors if this is why it shimmies...

Just as quick update: The Toyota techs kept telling me that my brakes were still good even after all these miles. I finally just had them replace the pads and resurface the rotors after 107k miles. I figured it was simply time. With that said, the truck now has over 110k miles and has needed absolutely nothing more than the most basic of maintenance. I know we sometimes cry and moan about other companies offering more features for the dollar or that Toyota may not budge as much when buying a new vehicle, BUT for my money, they have focused on building truly dependable vehicles as a reasonable price. There's no question when the time does come that my next vehicle will be another (fourth) 4Runner. :thumb:

when I bought the truck at 26k certified I'm going to assume they cut down the rotors to make them feel nice.. which they did.. I now have a really bad shimmy while braking.. I really don't feel like cutting them down again because they'll do the same thing even sooner.. and really.. I can't recall but 1 times that I got on them hard when an idiot pulled out in front of me in my neighborhood.. once shouldn't do this which is why I'm assuming they were cut when I bought them.. soo I'm about to get the rotors from Toyota on my discount at $91 each.. I checked online.. didn't see much that I cared for within a reasonable price.. I don't like the drilled holes disc for a 4runner.. just slotted would look fine.. I don't need pads.. it had new ones when I bought the 4runner (another reason why i'm sure they cut the rotors). but I am contemplating doing HAWK LTS pads.. just kinda git r' done while I'm in there.. my question is.. do any of you know of any good rotors before I just end up buying oem ones (I've used hawk and powerslots/brembo rotors on my cars in the past and never get a warp rotor) but I'm willing to try oem again and see if they'll get warped under my driving habit vs lady who owned it before :rant: ... I'm running EBC's Ultimate Slotted Rotors with their Green Stuff pads.
