Anyone done a hand throttle?

I'm looking into adding a hand throttle to my 3rd gen. Has anyone done it before?

I know it's been covered before in 1st or 2nd gens, and of course other vehicles, but I'm curious to see if anyone has actually done it in a 3rd gen. If you have, post up some pics and any problems you encountered!

i know its common for tacoma guys to replace their parking brake cable with a throttle, esp if they have a manual vehicle, that way they can better use the clutch brake and accelerator all at the same time.

Thanks for the link! I would have never found that in my search haha. I'm still trying to decide if I want to do it with a brake lever, or a shifter. I'm almost leaning towards brake lever at the moment, like the guy in the link did.

I will be doing this soon. I am going to remove the cruise control since i never use it and replace that cable on the throttle body with a bike brake cable and use that to adjust the throttle.

See I'd like to retain my cruise control when I do mine. So you're thinking about using a brake lever then? I figured it wouldn't be as necessary if I had duals, but since you're planning on doing it.. maybe that's not the case haha. Unless you're doing it with a shifter style one for winching, etc.

Their parking brake cable? I've never heard of that. But that's exactly the reason I want to do a hand throttle on mine.

And after watching his Youtube video, I've decided that I'm definitely going with the friction style shifter like he did. Now I just have to order the parts and figure everything out. Shouldn't be too hard (infamous last words).

if it were me, I would look for a better place to attach the cable.
the way it is in that link, it looks as tho it would be easy for the HT cable to drop underneath the throttle cable, with a WOT hit.
unintended acceleration anyone? not good.

I agree. Mine won't be attached to the TB like that. I haven't quite figured out how it will attach, but ideally, I want to be able to easily disconnect it, and then I would only hook it up for wheeling. I can just see one of my jackass friends thinking it's funny to mess with the hand throttle while I'm driving around town lol. I'd like to avoid that.

For what it's worth, a simple hand throttle can be made by copying the FJ60/62 style which uses and extension/arm above the foot pedal that is pulled directly by a knob on the dash. The knob locks in place and is easily moved with a gentle pull or push. Here is a link to an unrelated thread on Ihatemud that has a diagram if you scroll down.

I've always had an automatic, so the only time I've used it is when I'm jump starting someone who's battery is extremely dead. Delco alternators like a little rpm's to get the amperage up.

Well I've reached the point where I need someone more knowledgeable than me to tell me if my current idea for the hand throttle is absolutely horrible, or if it's feasible.

So here's what I'm thinking. My 4runner, being a 5 speed, obviously does not have the transmission kickdown cable, but it does still have all the brackets/connections at the throttle body for it. It looks like the normal operation of the kickdown cable is to close the throttle body (to be honest, I don't really know the function of the whole tranny kickdown system), but what if I routed my hand throttle cable under the springs and then back up to the kickdown connection, so that way it would pull it open instead?

Here's a very shoddy visual representation of what I'm trying to say.

In this picture, the new hand throttle cable would roughly follow the red line, going under the springs and then back up to hook into the spot the kickdown cable normally would:
