Anyone experience the noise when...

...you get out to pump gas for your wife and cant tell that she hasn't turned the ignition switch off? It was an awful growl that took a few seconds to recognize where it was coming from. My fuel filler tube! What was taking place?

Your answer is there and has been discussed here ALOT!

HINT: Automatic system checking your fuel system.

Don't run your engine while fueling.

Sorry. I fixed it by hollering "DID YOU NOT CUT THE ENGINE OFF!?!"

Topped off w/$36 of Chevron then jumped in the truck and grabbed the iPad, thinking to myself WTH...

yes, I think I did get the Owners Manual option on this one.

Happened to me today when I left the car running for my dog. I still always sat WTH even though I know what it is lol.
 
I did this Monday morning at 2:30 A.M. coming back from CO. I was so tired I didn't realize I left the engine on. I was paying at the pump and had already undone the cap when I heard that noise. Still made the noise when the gas was pumping too. i told the wife and she said she was glad the 4Runner didn't blow up.....:noidea::noidea:
 
I get the fuel pump ready and then take off the cap and try to stick the nozzle in before it has a chance to make the noise.
 
Yes, my fuel pump is loud, always has been. At 120k miles and it still sounds the same. Once in a while it is quiet and I begin to worry, then I go to fill up again and hear the comforting WHAWHAWHAWHAWHA.

When you hear that on a GM, you get to decide if you want to drop the tank to replace the pump, or cut a hole in the body/bed for the annual replacement.

I encountered the noise when I was filling up today. I recently got a 4Runner and I've never turned off my engines in prior vehicles when pumping gas. None of my other vehicles have made that noise.

Is there any problem pumping gas with the fuel sensor or whatever that is detecting gas level?

You of all people ought to know to shut the engine off while refueling.....
Not because of the Evap pump, but because of the risk some knuckehead in N'aulins jumping in your T4R while you're filling it and it's running! :wtf:

1. 23 year olds who have not been taught better.
2. People who cannot read the sign saying "Turn off engine"
3. People who cannot take the time to turn the key twice more.
4. People who cannot stand on their own two feet for longer than three minutes.
5. People who are too lazy to turn the key.
6. People who are too soft to get back in a vehicle that has had the temperature rise (or fall) two degrees during the time it took to fill up.
7. Uneducated people.

I can go all day...

I don't refuel in New Orleans. Only Metairie. My parents never killed the engine growing up and so I never have. I'm also usually sitting in the vehicle while it's refueling! I've never been car jacked, just one failed attempt in the city that didn't happen while I was refueling.

forgot 1, when its -40F/C and you don't want to stand outside for the 3-5 minutes to freeze your a$$ to the side of the 4runner.

Heh I'll admit to climbing back into the cab when it's freezing out while the car fuels up, BUT MY ENGINE IS STILL OFF! :D
 
Struck me as odd the first time I heard it as well. I too am one of the satanic, devil-worshipping, human-sacrificing, uneducated heathens who sometimes leaves my car running while the pump runs. *GASP* Just trying to enjoy what little time I have left on this earth before my stupidity leads to my untimely end.

Yeah no other vehicle I've used has made that sound. I'm right there with you. I could be a Rhode scholar and the keyboard commando's would still say I'm an idiot for leaving my engine running.

Other than having my car stolen, I haven't seen a good reason to turn it off. I haven't spontaneously combusted yet! Biggest risk of an explosion is static electricity, and whether the vehicle is running is a moot point with that. Ignitions have come a long way since the 30's and 40's. The risk of an ignition with the distance between the engine and the tank, combined with the vapor recovery nozzles pretty much every station uses nowadays makes that next to impossible.

Different strokes for different folks.
