Anyone go from Limited to Trail? Keep & add $ or trade for Trail?

I have a 2011 4runner I just picked up not long ago after coming back from a truck. This is my 3rd 4Runner and I forgot after not having one for a few years how much I actually really like these things. Since warranty on these things are pretty reasonable I'm planning to add a 75k or 100k warranty shortly on my Limited. I'm also pricing new LTD's and TE for kicks. There is a trail with Nav in the picture and I'm curious what your thoughts are for those trading a Limited for a Trail. Never been a fan of factory nav on anything. I know the main difference as far including the goodies, awd, 4x4 and diff lock.... I hunt and plan to start doing a bunch more but I'm curious with the overall daily ownership if there are any real regrets or misses either way? Not a true offroader...
So I will end up dumping a little money out this year for warranty, wheels and new 17" tires on the limited. Better to put the money on a new Trail or into the Limited? I doubt I would ever add a locker or any more into the Limited than that. Thanks all

I did that. i went from a 2010 Limited to a 2011 Trail. I'm happy with my decision.. i wouldn't have been able to have as much fun with my limited with just a lift and tires without messing up a lot of bumpers.. and area's where the locker got me through.

don't get me wrong though.. i do miss my heated seats.. the leather.. i could go either way..cold in winter, hot in summer.. i do miss the auto a/c and lil led lights in door handles and the turn signals on the mirror and the puddle lights.. but i can do without all that. I'm happy with my Trail!

Well speaking about the 2014s, we were kinda in the same boat. But our dilemma was between the Trail and Trail Premium. Limited was out of the question since I hate the wheels and all the chrome on the front end. And they don't have the awesome hood scoop

The Trail Premium came with all the little extra luxury froo-froo stuff that I didn't care for; moonroof, auto-dimming mirrors, turns signals and puddle lights in the side view mirrors and fake leather SofTex heated seats.

Out of those things, the only important one was seat material since I didn't like cloth. So we ended up with a regular Trail and got a custom leather package from the dealer for $1,495. We even got to pick our own color. It also came with the premium audio and navigation, a $585 option. Could have added seat heaters too but we live in CA, there's no such thing as winter over here.

So if you're in the market for a new 4Runner and don't really need those little extra gizmos and gadgets in your life, consider a lesser trim and add the custom leather - if seat material is important to you.

Emailing dealer and he said he didn't know what a Trail Premium was... :/ I would think he would take a look at the Toyota website & do a little homework before he sent me that note.
I'm thinking maybe a Trail Premium might give me enough of the inside goodies and still offer the offroad Trail goodies too.

Haha typical. When emailing several dealers one girl replied and said she could bring in the "super rare Trail Limited". WAT? Sign me up!

Trail Premiums are nice, albeit they use a synthetic leather. It does come with red stitching though

yea i wish i could have got a trail premium for 2011 but they didn't offer it.. it would be a great combination in my opinion.

I'm in a similar boat. I've had my '13 LE for a year now, I've only been off-road a handful of times. I love the '14s.. My favorite option of all is the Redwood leather. It's what I envisioned all along and had to settle for tan in my '13 lol. I want the look and capabilities (KDSS, 2wd option, exterior) of a Trail, but the interior of a LE with Redwood. I know folks say the red stitching isn't that noticeable, but I disagree and I personally hate it.

Do what we did. Regular Trail, custom leather upgrade. This aftermarket leather feels MUCH better quality than the thin OEM leather. Here's a sample of the colors you typically see. This is the Katzkin brand

Not yet. We just bought the truck so it's going back on Monday for the install. But I did see a Camry and a 4runner SR5 they did. It was NICE. Leather felt very plush, much better than OEM leather.

Just out of curiosity, wondering what the difference in cost would be to simply add the things to get you where you want to go vs. trading for trail premium. Might be something to consider... the '11 LE could be made quite as capable if not more so than the TE with a few well placed mods. I honestly don't think there is a place a TE could go that I'd not traverse. :bathbaby:

Thanks for the replies... I got pricing on new and while it actually wouldn't cost a bunch to trade for a regular Trail, the Premium and Limited would be more than I want to spend to buy almost the same vehicle that I'm already driving. That's one of the nice things with Toyota, is that they just flat out don't change much when the newer years are replaced. I'll add some 17" wheels for some AT's and enjoy my beast. :thumb3:

Limited To TRAIL

I went from an 11 SR5 to a 12 TE. I should have test driven both before I bought the SR5. However, if I was in your shoes, then I would look into the thread that details the external conversion of the LE to the TE by Gary (Harper7) and go that route as opposed to selling/trading and buying another T4R. Just my $.02
