Anyone Hardwire a Radar Detector yet?

Finally got around to installing using my invisicord today. I didn't have a voltmeter, so i just plugged the yellow into blue and black into white as mentioned, and it's working. Any reason I should go back and use a voltmeter to check my work, or am i good as long as it's working?


I don't see the appeal of this blendmount contraption. I prefer to have it up higher in a less conspicuous place. I just use the visor clip (my corvette has an aftermarket mount that screws into the visor clip, which is a cleaner solution). For those who use the blendmount, do you take your detector down every time you get out of the car? I usually leave mine up. It's not completely invisible from outside the car, but much less noticable.

I just recently acquired a V1 a couple days ago and decided to hardwired it to the cable (under the plastic cover) that runs into the auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

Instead of buying an invisicord, I ended up making one since I had free time and wanted to mess around with it. I'm also very impatient when it comes to waiting for purchases in the mail. It only took about 30 minutes or so to make and was pretty straight forward. If there is some interest I will do a little write up with some tips when I have time.

Basically the items you need are: soldering iron, solder, telephone cord, heat shrink, crimp connectors/prongs.

I have it mounted to the left of the rear view mirror on suction cups and the cord running inside the headliner.

I recently dealt with the company you guys have mentioned here, for their wiring from the detector to the rear view mirror. My first email was whether it would work on my Passport 8500X50 for my 2011 Limited was answered in 24 hours with the typical, "yes it will work." I'm somewhat a skeptic, so I email them again for a few specifics, it's been over a week and I haven't heard back from them, so I went to my local high performance shop and asked these guys what could they do, and in 30 minutes time they made the wire attachment from my detector to the rear view mirror, and connected it, all for $25.00 and it works perfectly. I'm in a small town, hell, the county only has like 35k people, so if these guys can do it here, I guess they could do it most anyplace. :cheers:

In California, it is illegal to have anything suction-cupped to the windshield. I live in Arizona, but travel to CA, so I know the rules there.

I wouldn't worry about getting pulled over in CA for having anything suction cupped on your windshield. Window tint is illegal on the front side windows and lots of people have that too.

I would worry more about LADAR. It seems every cop is using it these days. From my understanding your radar detector isn't going to go off until it's too late with LADAR.

On a side note, CHP has been all over the place lately. I have not seen them out this heavy since I have lived here. Be careful driving in SoCal!

Highly doubt it, unless they feel like being an ass. Many vehicles have that strip on top and I've never heard of anyone getting pulled over for it. Same with the radar detector. I've heard that if you have a radar detector and you get caught for speeding, automatic ticket, no negotiating for lower speeds or getting out of a ticket. But I'm not sure, I haven't been pulled over since I got my detector, Knock on wood...


FYI, I used this to hardwire my detector. I like it more since I put the silencer next to my seat on the right.

Whenever I park, I remove the detector from my dash to avoid tempting thieves. I'm going to see if I can find a way to mount mine up near the headliner, to the right of the mirror and sunroof console, and then hardwire it in. The only downside with that is that I won't be able to see the controls on top if it's up there.

It's quite possible that an LEO could be harder on the speeder if he has a radar detector -- I mean, it stands to reason, there's just no way they like them. If I see a cop coming up behind me, or I am going to pull up next to one at a traffic light, I remove my radar detector from the dash, for that reason. I'm not desirous of giving them a reason to try to find a way to single me out and issue me some kind of ticket.

I put mine top right next to the mirror and angled slightly up. It's over enough to where I can pull the visor down and cover it up quickly.

I also take it down when I'm parked in questionable areas. Don't need some kids breaking in to my window for any reason!

Took the plunge and did the blend mount. I really like the clean look. I'm sick of having wires everywhere for all my gadgets.

How did you get the mute switch to look so flush? You said you used your dremmel, but did you take off the original plastic housing? It look so flush! (<--- Jealousy) What is the plastic surrounding the switch?

For those who did the Escort hardwire, did you use something like the following to add the fuse or what method did you use?

Yup I used add-a-circuit mini. I forgot which fuse slot i plugged it in.

I took the remote apart and had to grind down the circuit board some then dremeled out one of the blanks to hold everything, then glued and clamped it together, placed the original sticker on the modified blank/remote.

Do you have to remove your driver side airbag pillar to run the wire through?
