Anyone have a "clank" when braking in reverse??

CV boot rub where?pics? I thought you had the diff drop installed?

Why don't you just back the nut off the Ultimates to lower them some.Then you can adjust it back if you need to for the future added weight of a bumper and winch. The ones I put on had over 3 inches of lift when I put them on and had to be lowered but that's why they have an adjusting nut.

Cuz that is too logical lol.

It was more of a joke reason to convince my wife that I need to order the bumper etc now vs later.

If you are really interested I can prob get some pics this weekend. It's not too bad but the CV boots do show signs of rubbing because of the lifted angle. If I lower the suspension ill need to chop my body mount as the combo of its current height and taking a BFH to the mount was enough to clear. I'm sure if I lower the suspension my 295s will rub.

I have it on my 03 Sr5, and I just did a full front and rear break job so it isn't the breaks but I only get the sound when hitting the breaks. Took everything off and there wasn't anything and it turns out it was the center cap (the one with the Toyota logo on it) so I just wrote it off. If you're getting it breaks or not, there's something wrong.

Lots of Toyotas do this.. my 97 Avalon does.. my GS400 with Supra TT brakes did.. its just something i've come to accept.. although.. my 4Runner doesn't do it.. yet.. I think you just need to pull back or tighten the shims allowing the pads to move ever so slightly.. if it's REALLY bothering you.. try replacing the shims/fitting kit for the front brakes.

There is a TSB open for this on all 4runners 2010-present. read it was something with the drive shaft i believe. Getting mine done thursday. theres a few things on here with more descriptions of this issue

that's the clunk felt from the rear as if you're getting tapped by another car.. this is a clank sound that's felt thru the brake pedal as you apply the brake in reverse.. as if the pads are shifting from a forward to rear position against the caliper sides

Hopefully I don't jinx it but I may have fixed the clank today. If so it was one of three things.

First I noticed that every bolt for my bud built sliders could be tightened and one was even about a half inch out. The threads for that bolt were toast so unfortunately for now there is no bolt in that hole. So I re torqued every bolt on the slider. The ones that go through the gas tank skid were the loosest. Could explain the noise under reverse braking if the sliders were shifting against the frame.

2nd thanks to the FJ forums I torqued the LCA bolts to the frame to spec. The left front was loose.

3rd I torqued the body mount bolts.

I checked a variety of other bolts but everything else was to spec. So far I've driven it about 5 times after letting it sit for a variety of times and no clank so far. Fingers crossed it doesn't come back.

I usually back into parking spots, but in some cases it's not practical, and twice when I was backing out of a parking spot I froze because it sounded like I hit another car. This morning I rolled the truck backwards at slow speed in neutral and applied the brakes - very definitive clank. It sounds a lot like a trailer hitch hitting a plastic bumper.

Is this something I should get checked out? Did anybody confirm a TSB for this? Does the 4R use floating calipers? Could shifting pads be the cause?

I'm not sure how fast y'all are moving when you are backing up and braking, but there is a chain hanging through the center of the spare tire. Perhaps you are hearing this strike the rim?? Try securing that chain a little and see if your sound goes away.

I have a tiny click maybe 1 out of 5-6 times I backup (only first time in the morning), but mine sounds like it's coming from the front. I'm fairly sure it's got something to do with my sway-bar. Some day I'll remove the sway-bar for a week or so and determine if that is indeed my issue (if I can even call it an issue). I would not call mine a "bad" sound, just a slight tap/click.

This is the source of the clank sound you guys are talking about. I had this same issue in my 08 FJ and after we changed the brake pads and re greased the parts the sound went away, but it did eventually come back.

Well for me it wasn't the brakes. I'm pretty sure it was the loose bolts on my rock sliders. Everything has been silent ever since I tightened those bolts and the other loose items mentioned above. I even spent 3 hours in the rocks today and everything is still perfect.

My clank finally went away after I got my alignment redone. Don't know what it was but don't care either.

i've got a 2015 TRD pro and have noticed this. it only seems to happen when:

1. the vehicle is cold
2. when i simultaneously apply the brake and turn the wheel in reverse

even when both conditions above are met, it's not consistent.

this sounds like the most likely answer:

pads are shifting from a forward to rear position against the caliper sides

it sounds like it's coming from the left front wheel, it only happens when i apply the brake (doesn't happen if i just turn in reverse), and it sounds like a grabbing sound....like if you were to run a piece of sticky rubber over a hardwood floor.

so - something to be concerned with or no?

I have aSR5 14 model and mine does it. It is more of a clicking sound. I don't worry about it. It has not gotten worse. It is only in reverse and braking when I hear it too.

mine is definitely not a clicking sound. there is even a slight shudder that comes up from the wheel.

Could this be the ABS system start up test? I had an infiniti and if you hit the brakes at the perfect time you would feel the ABS kick in because it was going through its start up cycle to verify it was functioning. This only happened within 15 seconds of starting the vehicle.

I've been working on a click as well. Mine appears to be rear passenger wheel. Happens starting from a stop at a few mph. Doesn't do it when it's wet out but only when it's dry. Makes me think I have a sticking brake. Once It clicks once it doesn't happen unless I apply brakes and only if I'm stopped or close to stopped. Ugh.

Anybody able to resolve this? I've had this same clank sound when shifting from Park to Reverse and Reverse to Drive for some time now. Not sure if it's the shims or something else. :shrug:

Mine was attributed to my lower control arms being torqued out of spec. I forget what the spec is but there's a couple threads on it. If you don't have a torque wrench autozone may "lend" you one.

I definitely have this, can you replicate the sound by driving into a curb at slow speed? Ive been over my front suspension multiple times to torque everything to spec but the sound is still there. Just hoping whatever it is it doesn't give up the ghost while on the trail
