Anyone here ever siped mud tires?

I went a little crazy last night with the tire grooving/siping tool.

Like I said, I have been driving in a winter/snowy climate for a lot of years so I feel VERY comfortable driving in any conditions, but these tires on my '98 have been a sketchy combo. I've been feeling the back end walk out on me at even low to moderate speeds (in 2wd) on the highway so I felt that I needed to do something.

I got a GREAT deal on the tires. 1 brand new spare and 4 with under 1k miles for $500 and I couldn't pass it up.

I guess we'll see what happens once we get a little more snow.

This is just showing the grooving, I'll upload a picture of the siping once they open up a bit.

I have BFG Mud Terrain KM 2 that I had siped when they were mounted. from past experience I knew sipeing a tire with large block tread gives more traction on ice. I have only got around 4,000 miles on them but I am very happy with how they work onroad and off.

Mud terrains have lugs spaced pretty far apart, so I think water would clear the tire fairly easily. Plus the tread depth is very deep, so the treads can "hold" more water. I'm not sure siping would do that much, but I guess it depends on what you've been experiencing when you drive. Just a guess, I'm not a siping expert in any way.

I'm curious why the tires aren't siped from the factory? Seems like something that could easily be added to the molds that would only benefit the tires seemingly...

Look closely a good all weather m/s rated tire. Michelin MS2s for example are for practical purpose siped. For me they work about as good as anything (yes, including Blizzacs) on ice except studs or chains. Price could be a drawback.

Any update on the improvement after siping? Did you get your tires siped at a shop?

I just bought a grooving/siping tool and I plan on doing both to my BF Goodrich Mud Terrain KM's. I've been driving in the snow/ice for the last 20 years and I've noticed a BIG difference in these tires so far with lack of traction. I'm going to model the grooving pattern after the KM2's and adding sipes.

This is where I got the Ideal Heated Knife

It worked really well, but I spent about 45min/tire because of all of the grooving/siping. I definitely notice a difference in acceleration and braking, but I need to make some adjustments for lateral traction.
