Anyone installed the 5th gen mirror covers with the blinker and puddle lights?

I personally would leave it on and take advantage of having two free hands.

I would stick a screw driver in and pry the mirror glass off the mounting tabs from the bottom.

This is what you will expose. BTW it pops off from the bottom. Then slides down.

I would take a screw driver and unscrew the gold looking screw in the next picture that's behind the white mount inside thru the circle. There are 3 or 4 screws holding the cover to the motor assembly

This exposes the power mirror assembly and how it mounts to the mirror arm. There is a trim cover under the mirror arm with 3 t15 torx screws under it.
Once those 3 are removed you can pull the wires thru the gromit after its been disconnected from the truck on the inside.

I would buy some thin speaker wire from radio shack, 22ga. Much easier to route thru that tight space.
I would run 2 possibly 3 pairs thru. 1 for signal, 1 for heated mirror if you didn't have it, 1 for puddle lights if your trick didn't have it. Since you have it apart. You are leaving room for future mods.

Run it down thru the door gromit. There are two 10 mm bolts hidden on the back side to release the door jam boot.

Note:when you reassemble take care not to pinch the wires on the mirror arm when you put the 3 torx screws back on. Look closely you will see a chanel that the wires run thru. This is where it helps to have two or four extra hands to hold it for you. If it's mounted to the truck, the two and you were born with will do just fine.

I just did my muth turn signal mirrors last week. That's why all this is fresh in my mind. I'm sure I'll get a PM years from now asking how I did it. I would sadly say I forgot lol.

gshadow325 : The 3 torx screws are 25, not 15. (at least they are on my Limited) I hear ya on the wires and properly setting them so they don't get pinched. My new mirror cover has 4 wires (about 24-26gauge). ABOUT the same size as the 5 existing wires from the factory (heated mirror from the factory and electric mirror). So I basically doubled the amount of wires going through the wire sleeve (which I had to slice to get all the wires to fit in).

If I had to do it all over again, I'd try this: 9 Conductor 26 AWG Stranded PVC Cable - Per FT | ShowMeCables.com
I'm thinking this would be the absolute best way to wire everything up.

Your way is most likely the best way to take the innards out to do a mod like mine or yours. I guess I'll try this IF there is a next time for me, which I doubt. Very helpful for anyone else.

After this, I don't plan on "adding" anything to the mirror (no room for the wires in the sleeve, at least for me).

Alright.

Slow build indeed. Anyway, I mustered up some time yesterday to open my doors up (still haven't broken any clips........ very proud of that, LOL) and work on this. As I mentioned before, I had to cut the wires (electric/heat) to take the wire loom out and install the extra wires (puddle/turnSignal). Doing this basically doubled the amount of wires in the loom and somehow shortened the wires a few inched. oh well. It's all packaged nicely and water tight.

What I did: Made wire extensions (just a few inches) and wired up the factory wires. I also wired up the puddle lights to the door courtesy lights. The puddle lights go one when the door is open. This makes the most sense to me and also the easiest to splice. I didn't splice the turn signal LEDs b/c I saw that I have to take out the wire loom and grommet (between door and body). I was running out of sunlight and it was getting cold. I hate the winter. HATE IT.

took advantage of the nice weather and got fishing some wire (turn signal) from the passenger door to the inside of the truck. Driver's side next (tomorrow), should be all hooked up by weekend!!

Surprisingly, it wasn't that bad to fish the wire through the rubber boot. I DON'T expect it to be easy for the driver's side.

What's different about the driver's side that you expect would make it harder?

Thanks man! It's coming together very nicely. I thought I would HATE the LED color of the puddle lights, but as it turn out, are VERY nice. Very factory looking (to me).

Today I only spent about 45 minutes on this. Once all the wires are "inside", the connection to the turn signals will be fast and easy. I can't wait

Well, the driver's door has a couple of plugs that aren't very easy (at least for me) to disconnect. The plugs in the passenger side were easy. Also, the driver's kick panel will have to accessed being that my LED wires will be fed into that space. Don't forget all sorts of fuse boxes are there. Passenger side is basically empty space and very easy to work with. I did a mod like this with my Honda Civic (installed Civic Hybrid mirrors with the stock LED turn signals............. wow, was that a pain!!!). Anyway, I'll post pics.

Sure looks like it. Factory-look is crucial to me for almost every mod I do. No offense meant to anyone else here who's rigs have wandered far from the original look. But, personally, I prefer it when it looks like it came off the assembly line with these mods.

These mirrors are surprisingly good. From the photos, I'd think you couldn't even tell they're aftermarket parts.

I hear ya. It (whatever mod) has to look factory for me to even consider it. Having that said, the majority of folks here heavily mod their rigs for offroading and that's very cool and I respect that. I love alot of rigs on here, I just don't participate in those threads b/c it's something I don't do.

I'm thinking of doing a "build thread" just to show (and reference for me) all the mods/add-ons I've done. Funny thing is: a non-4Runner enthusiast won't notice a damn thing. :spy:

I knew fishing the wire through the driver's side was going to be more complicated and it was. However, Not as BAD as I original thought. Note: Red and Black wires taped together where my finger is and those same wires lying on the carpet near where the foot rest goes.

While I was there and everything was apart, I believe I found the wires I (we) need to tap into.
Driver Turn Signal Wire: Blue/Black
Passenger Turn Signal Wire: Blue/Yellow

Location: driver's kick panel.

Plug taken off making it easier to tap into the wires.

Wiring? Easy street from here. Of course, I'll report back. Good night y'all.

PS: If I'm wrong on the wiring, please let me know. I'm going to double check before I go splicing into anything.

From the 2005 wiring diagram, YES, blue with yellow & blue with black. That looks like the "1F" connector you have unplugged & they should be the wires in positions 9 (for left) & 15 (for right). 9 is at one end & 15 is the opposite end 2nd from end, does that look right? Those wires lead to the rear lights.

Tracking is kind of funny, eh? Looks like mine are still somewhere in China.

I'm no audiophile, but I don't see myself touching the speaker wires ever. I may replace them if they blow out. Hopefully the LEDs in the mirror last long so I don't have to put up with them.

I totally hear ya on that looney tunes tracking they have. My tracking didn't move for almost 20 days. I was getting ready to contact the seller. Again, it's a real shame they don't even offer another method of shipment. Anyway, you won't be disappointed when you get them!! I love mine.

So, 12 days. Not too bad.
External packaging (bubble wrap, tape, plastic bag-type materiel) looked good. Tore that open & cardboard box was a little crushed. Everything inside was fine though. Tested the lights & they all work, mine had none of the lights installed in the housing but no biggie as they'd have to be removed for paint anyway. Not overly impressed with light output BUT it was in bright sunlight AND they weren't actually viewed installed in the proper position.

Will advise when installed...

CookieRoe, the mirror just pops off from its normal position? Or do you have to fold it in at all?

So I was somehow under the impression that I could get these in black and wouldn't have to paint them. However it looks like the actual ABS only sells in the white color. Now I guess I have to find someone willing to paint these, or paint them myself...
