Anyone ordered a mattress in a box online?

Starting to research a new bed and can't help but notice (more like get inundated daily by ads) the abundance of online mattress retailers that seem to be springing up. Tuft and Needle, Purple, Casper, Leesa, Endy, etc, etc, etc...

Pricing seems to be a big advantage of buying like this vs traditional mattress stores, but the obvious disadvantage is not being able to try any of them before buying.

Every brand seems to have tons of favorable reviews on their website and the further I've gone down this rabbit hole I've discovered that a lot of the 'mattress review' sites online as well as reviews posted elsewhere are fakes put out by the manufacturers. From what I've been reading this is a highly competitive space at the moment and some companies are looser with their ethics than others.

Currently I'm leaning towards Purple solely because their hyper elastic polymer seems to be the only truly unique product on the market. Most just seem to be varying densities of foam/memory foam. That being said though, unique doesn't necessarily mean more comfortable.

Just thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has any experience with any of these brands. Either with the mattresses themselves or the buying/return/warranty experience. Any feedback anyone could provide would be useful.

Ordered classic Purple for the guest room the rare time I have company over.

I tried it out for myself and it seems okay.

The cat mostly sleeps on it. He seems to like it.

We have a king size loom and leaf. It's not a vacuum packed boxed mattress though. It was delivered and brought up to our room and the old mattress taken for free. It's a little bit of a hot bed, but overall very comfortable for our sleep preference.

My wife got tired of her memory foam mattress about six months ago and started her search then. I told her to get whatever she wanted and I was in. She ended up choosing a Nectar, http://nectarsleep.com and we have had it for 3-4 months now. We are both liking it as we are side sleepers and our hips were beginning to bother us on the old mattress. Haven’t experienced it on the new one.

Main selling point to her on the Nectar was a 365 night sleep guarantee. Who knows if they will be around in a year or how long the mattress will actually last, but I feel like we should be able to put it through it’s paces over the course of 365 and see if we truly like it or not.

I am curious to know what they would do if we actually wanted to return the mattress. I guess they would have to make some arrangements locally to pick it up and it most certainly wouldn’t be “shrink wrapped” by us for the return trip.

We also picked up a Nectar and love it.

We bought a cheap memory foam mattress about 5 years ago and my wife hated it, said it was too stiff and was against memory foam.

The biggest thing that we have found is that memory foam mattress seem to "break in" with daily use. When you don't use them for a week or two in a row they become a bit stiffer until slept in a night or two. In our opinion they aren't great for a rarely used guest bedroom but seem like a major upgrade for your normal bed.

+1 for Nectar, friends have Casper and Purple and love em too.

We've had the Leesa for over 4 years. It has held up well. I suspect we'll replace it in 2 years.
It's medium firm. Just enough give so shoulders and hips don't hurt for side sleepers.

While we have been happy with it. I don't know that I will buy it again. I'm having back surgery in a month and may need something different. I had been looking at the purple, but we'll see.

I never realized how expensive these were. A Queen size Purple with the 4" padding is $2700...

Not a regular mattress but we bought a King size soft sided dual waveless memory foam top of the line Oxford from The Waterbed Doctor. It has multiple levels of foam above the water and it feels like you are sleeping on a cloud.

The only downside is it is way thicker than a normal mattress so it can be hard to fit on the bottom sheet.

Went from a $5000 Tempur-pedic Cloud Luxe that was good for a couple of years and then we grew to hate it. Very hot and developed "holes" where you slept... not measurable so warranty wouldn't cover, but definite soft spots. So we bought a Purple which I love. Doesn't have the weakening foam issue that the Tempur had and it is very cool (not hot). My wife now hates it though.

My son bought a Tuft & Needle. We had given him the Tempur-pedic when we got the Purple and he hated it from the get go. He really likes the Tuft & Needle though.

All that said, with the liberal return policies, great pricing and the good quality of most of the mattresses-in-a-box, I would not be afraid to try any of them. I will never again buy a $5000 mattress... I know that for sure... and probably never again from a traditional mattress store.

As for the sagging issue on your old mattress, in reading reviews online I came across a great way to illustrate sag. Either for review or warranty purposes. Fill 4-5 gallon milk jugs with water and place them across the bed. Any "impression" or sag is immediately obvious from the leaning milk jug. People take pictures of this and use them for warranty claims.

I had a waterbed growing up and had some of the best sleep of my life on it. Despite what they say about them being bad for your back I never had any back problems. May have been the age, as I was a teenager at the time, but I loved that bed and always slept great on it. Nice and warm to get into in the winter and cool to sleep on in the summer.

It's a firm mattress and I think she likes softer mattresses. The Tempur was soft but with the depressions it felt like sleeping in a hammock and made both of our backs hurt. I think if she had a softer mattress than the Purple with even support for the full length of the bed she would like it better.

I've had a tuft and needle queen mattress for 3.5 years and love it. best mattress i've owned so far and its not showing any wear. the only thing i can say negative about it is theres not much support on the sides so if you sit on the edge of the bed to put your socks on it sinks.

our old trad mattress was making our backs hurt and since switching we haven't had any backaches.
