Anyone running 16" steel wheels?

I'd like to get some more aggressive off road tires and mount them to steel wheels for occasional off road use. I like the "commercial" look. For street/DD use, I'd stick with my stock wheels (currently wrapped in Falken ATs, but ideally I'd move on to something more like an all-weather tire for those).

I like the 16" steel wheels used on low-spec SR5s, but they're hard to find. The Canadian market had a 4Runner Badlands model that would be exactly what I'd want. The Badlands was a U.S.-spec Sport outside but with steel wheels, no window tint, non-sport seats covered in a unique upholstery and a urethane steering wheel.

Then there are stock spare tire steelies, which I could have powder coated in either silver or a dark silver. Not sure how good these would look on a 4Runner, though. Looks amazing on this Taco.

And then there are new Taco steelies... they came in 16"... but I'm not sure they really do it for me.

Any other ideas?

Ah, I forgot about FJ Cruiser steelies. Should be pretty easy to find. These powdercoated a dark silver (couple shades darker than Thundercloud)? Hmmm.

The stock aluminum wheels will be just fine for offroading and should weigh less than the steels.

I don't see ANY point besides looks for having steel wheels on the average 4R owner.

I may get some as well. Konigs and all them other fancy wheels dont do it for me. Steels make it look really rugged. Gas mileage will suffer im sure.

It's a little more unsprung weight, but not a lot. These aren't sports cars after all.

guy I work with is doing the Wolf XD's on his white Landrover....man these seem to look much better in white....although my truck is desert dune so I'm thinking black or silver too..

My '92 4Runner had 16"ers from a mid-2000 base model Tundra when I bought it. They handle a stock 245/70R16, but I currently have 275/70R16 BFG Revo A/Ts that came off my Tahoe and they are only 1/2 inch wider than the 31.5x10.5x15 tires that were available as an option. I've never had them rub the wheel well. I wish it had the original aluminum 15s because they look nicer and have the covers that go over the 4x4 hubs up front though.

These wheels ought to be pretty inexpensive since they aren't premium and came on a lot of base vehicles including Sequoias. Good luck!

I was actually thinking of getting some steelies from an FJ or 1st Gen Tundra and painting them gray. They would look pretty sweet on a 3rd Gen. The Badlands Edition 3rd Gen looks pretty cool too. I always wondered why I saw Canadian Sports with steelies. Now I know.

What do the Tundra steelies look like? These?

Got to admit that those don't really do much for me.

Yeah, I remember the Badlands coming out back in '02 when I had my '00. Seemed like a pretty cool budget package.

Thanks. Those aren't black, it's easier to tell in person though. They're actually like a dark gunmetal grey color. Have been debating on matching them to the sliders w/ tan.

decided I don't like the offset look and would prefer the tire/wheel to be flush with the fender. the FN five stars are -25mm offset and 3.52" backspacing.

thinking of switching to a less aggressive tire (Micheline AT2 or Firestone Destination AT) and I really like the look of the FJ/Tundra black steel wheels.

which brings me to my two questions - 1. did you run into any issues when installing the Tundra steelies? caliper clearance etc? (I'm due for new brakes soon and likely gonna upgrade to the larger Tundra calipers... which could create an issue.) 2. is your wheel/tire flush with the fender? from the picture it looks like they aren't sticking out.

basically, I'm only going to go with FJ/Tundra steel only if it doesn't create additional work, require wheel spacers etc., and if they're flush with fenders.

These aren't the FJ / Tundra Steelies. These are the Spare 16" Steel wheels that come with our 4Runners.

I dig the look of the steelies in the original post more. They should also be cheaper to obtain. There's no need to powdercoat them either, I think a can of white or gray Rustoleum would make them look slick.

I didn't do anything special at all. I just painted them grey and bought different lug nuts. Let me know if you decide to sell your fn's I'm considering getting a set.
