Might be interesting, but has nothing to do with 255/80/17 specifically. It is based on All Season tires specifically, which most 255/80/17s are not.

Maybe...
I ran stock with 255/80s for 6 months. I wheeled it 5 times that way. I had no rub but every vehicle is different.
45,000 miles now and will be getting replaced next month.

Those are the 255 80 coopers- I read they may or may not rub being a true 33"
I have leveled with 5100/cf spacers only. Managed to get to 3.7° too after alignment
I like the ride a lot - you don't feel the weight but the sidewalls wash with the width and mileage hasn't changed. Fun running over 40 psi too

Taller tire with no rubbing, lower weight, less rolling resistance.
Great off-road and economical on road

A wider tire is better for on AND off-road performance. If Rolling resistance/fuel economy is a concern, why not just buy a Prius instead? You might save 1 mpg total by using skinnier tires.
well... do prius's come in 4wd yet?

There are times when a skinnier tire is better off road than a wider tire.
Just because you are unaware of that doesn't mean it's not true.

Tire performance depends entirely on what you are doing and the conditions that you are in.
Carving canyons where lateral grip is key? Wider tires are your friend because they have more tread on the ground.
Driving on in the rain with standing water on the road? Skinnier tires have a higher ground pressure and smaller surface area making them less prone to hydroplaning.
Bounding through some dunes? Wider tires will provide a greater surface area with less ground pressure to help the vehicle float.
Rocky, technical hill climbs? Skinnier tires will put more pressure to the ground providing better grip and precision.
It all depends...

Check post 19 & 21 for actual measurements of 255 vs 285. We are talking about less than 1/2” of what should be 30mm difference in width.

There's plenty of other threads where you can join the "4runners have to have wide tires" circlejerk.
The fact that you had to point out very specific, atypical scenarios where skinnier tires benefit proves my point. Generally, wider tires are better for performance on AND off road.
According to your logic,Maybe you should try some 205 section tires. Clearly, 255's are WAY too wide, and 205's be a better choice.

Rocks and rain are not atypical. Some of us don't drive in mud, and have things like hills and snow to contend with. And tall tires without rubbing is a real thing if you actually drive offroad. "AND onroad"
