Anyone taken any long road trips?

Hey guys and gals,

I’ve never had a car with this high of mileage (coming up on 188k) on my ‘05 4Runner V8. Thinking of taking a road trip this weekend with the girlfriend. Going from San Antonio to College Station which is about a 3 hour drive. I just wanted to ask y’all how your rig has faired out on the road with a little high mileage on it? Any issues?

Just did the timing belt, water pump, and coolant flush about 7k miles ago, and just changed the oil about 2K miles ago. Temperatures here are expected to be in the 90’s this weekend. Just wanted to get your opinion on road trips you’ve taken in warm weather.

Well, I'm no help, because the farthest I've taken my low mileage 4R is 1.5 hours. But I can say, College Station is a fun town. I went to a small town right outside of there for work, and went into town to watch a few Blues games during that week.

The odds are stacked in your favor. I've driven from before sun-up till dusk going to Moab 80mph. 3 hrs is nothing.

I am also a Blues fan. We ARE going to the playoffs. I hope.
I've taken my 4Runner V8 on 2 hour drives a few times. My rig has 241,000 miles on it. No problems. I also just did the timing belt, WP, coolant flush. You shouldn't have any problems. These vehicles can hit 300K easily. Have fun.

I don't ever remember the Blues playing there.

I've taken mine at least 15 times to Michigan last summer to go boating and shooting.

I've taken it to Mississippi from Illinois (1500 miles round trip) 3 times last year.

Also last summer I drove loaded to the ceiling with fishing gear from Rockford IL to Souix Lookout Ontario to go walleye and pike fishing on a fly-in.

Hit the road with 147,000 on the clock.

The road from the border to Souix is a 2 lane road 3 hour drive with one town in between (Dryden). Besides that, just you, moose and lots of trees.

Knock on wood, no issues on any of my trips. I'm really particular about maintenance and keep everything in order and changed when it is needed.

i bought my 08 4runner with 122,000 miles and 3 days later drove 2,500 miles from NY to UT in 3 days. one of those days i did 1,100 miles (17 hours). ive done the same drive with an 05 subaru outback that had 180,000 miles on it. as long as everything is in good working order i don't think you have anything to worry about

150K miles and took the family loaded down with camping gear 10 hours away. Not a thought of my 4R breaking down entered my mind.

I have a 2003 V8, bought at 198k miles and currently at 220k miles. Since owning it I've done multiple 3+ hour trips to Moab and southern Utah, sometimes towing my side by side without any issues. I also drove it 10 hours to southern California in June. AC blasting while it was over 100 degrees through Vegas and it didn't skip a beat. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere.

Last summer with a 100k miles already on the vehicle.

Drove from Central California coast, through Las Vegas and Arizona to Utah. Continued on to eastern Colorado after a stop in the Rockies. Then to Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, and back to the California coast. It was awesome. Saw some parts of the country I had been missing.

Also driven from Central coast, all the way up highway 1 through Oregon and Washington to the Canadian border. Also driven highway 1 from Central coast all the way to Mexico border and down into Baja. Also driven to Oregon several times. Also driven to Death Valley and into the Nevada deserts several times. All trips with lots of fun light offroading.

Each long trip I do all the usual checks, and if I know it's going to be in the 1000+ mile range, I might change my oil as well.

The hotel I was staying at didn’t have any sports channels that they were playing on, so I had to call around to various sports bars to make sure they had the channel and would put it on LOL.

Regularly take two 2.5 hour trips on weekends. Take care of general maintenance and you should have no problem.

When my 3rd gen had 160K miles on it, I did Pittsburgh PA to Yellowstone and back over three weeks. Drove 3500 miles on that trip. All I had to do was fill it with gas.
Road trips are a state of mind. 3500 miles is the equivalent of driving to and from work each day for 3 months, yet you would not worry about that. Know what I mean?

I’ve driven coast to coast in a 4runner twice. And from the top to the bottom. I even did a 17hr day once with the seat being the only problem. After a few hours the lumbar support gets pretty uncomfortable at every setting. Sounds like you’re taking car of her!

You should be good!
After buying mine with 164k miles (05 V8 4x4) I took it from Houston to Austin About the same drive you will do) and it went flawless.

Another good thing for you: On top of doing the maintenance you already did, you have actually driven it to ensure there are no leaks, all is well settled, belts are good, etc. If something was to happen after a big maint, it would have happened already.

You're idea of a long road trip is more like a little jaunt...that's nothing. Keep the maintenance up and a keen eye on wear parts and you'll be fine.
