Anyone upgraded to heated mirrors?

Has anyone here upgraded their truck with heated mirrors?

I asked a few people but seem to get conflicting info. Some say the heated mirrors are "plug-and-play." Others insist that it is a complicated process that involves installation of additional wiring, relays, and switches.

So, before I buy heated mirrors, I would like to hear from someone who either did or at least attempted this mod.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that mine are heated! They turn on with the rear-defroster button.
 
Added them to my 04 SR5. They are plug and play after 03.

Remove the door panel, remove mirror, put mirror in place, tighten nuts, run wire, replace door panel. Very simple actually.

I'ld give a 2 star difficulty rating out of 10.

One of the best mods I did.

FYI, the rear defroster switch controls the the mirrors (20 minute on time).

Did you buy OEM or aftermarket?

What do you mean by run wire?

The heated mirror has about an 8" wire that plugs into the connector that is located on the door. When you take off the door panel, you will see a 4? prong connector near the mirror.

8" wire on the heated mirror. How long is the wire on the non-heated? Or is it 2 different plugs?
 
Same length. The difference was the wire harness (connector) - an 03 T4R (IIRC) had only a 3 prong connector (power only) (it didn't have the wire harness for heated mirror), whereas the wire harness for an 04 and above T4R have a 4 wire harness/prong connector (heat + power). That's how you knew if you could add a heated mirror was by the connector. The wire length is the same, just one more wire for the heat.

Edit: sometime in late 2003, Toyota put the same wire harness on all T4Rs (you could add the heated mirror after that - plug and play).

Cool, timely thread!

I just bought a heated drivers side mirror for my '07 SR5 so I can see this winter. Its coming in Tuesday, so I'll let you know how the install goes, doesn't look hard.

If you can post some pics on what plugs plug into what, that would be great! I still can't believe having heated mirrors is just a matter of plugging them in!!!

If there are 3 wires at the connector on the door for the mirrors, you only have power to the mirror; if there are 5 wires to the connector at the door, you have power+heat (and can install OEM heated mirrors with no problems.) Anything past 04 has no problem. My build is 12/03 and all 5 wires were at the connector.

Edit: There's no need to actually remove the door panel entirely off the door. All you need to do is pop the panel off and then hang the panel on the door someway. Then pop off the triangle panel that is on the inside of the door behind the mirror. The door panel has to be removed so you can access the nuts to the mirror and the power connection. You can see the nuts to the mirror when you remove the triangle piece, but you cannot see the power connection.

Hey guys, I installed the new heated mirror today on my 2007 SR5. All went well, I'm ready for the the snow and ice now !

I bought an aftermarket unit for about $65 (not the signal mirror), looks the same as OEM and mounted up fine, electrical connector was a match. It came with a new foam gasket as well. The OEM and also the new connector were not "clicking" into the factory wiring plug, so I used some electrical tape to make sure it would not vibrate out.

The instructions at the link provided by R.A. above for the Muth signal mirrors was helpful for removal of the door panel, the factory manual does not have any more details actually.

One you remove the 2 door panel screws and black push-pin, the inner door plugs are what is holding it on. I pried off the top of the door panel near the window scraper and then worked aroud the edge with two fingers on either side of each inner plug to losen them without tearing them out of the door panel. It was fairly easy.

Aftr that its an easy remove and reinstall for the mirror.

Next was testing, and I discovered that after pulling the negative battery cable. I had to initialize the side and back windows before the Rear Defrost would go on, which also turns on the side mirror heating elements.

It heated right up, was a rectangle shaped area of heated mirror (not quite the whole mirror area), but it will likely melt most of the snow/ice off once fully heated (not sure how the factory mirror element is placed in there?.

Oh, and you can't miss which connector it is.

The wire coming out of the door/window area where the mirror mounts, just runs down about 4-6 more inches below what you see in the pic, and the connector is right there. Its not hidden or taped over or bundled with other stuff.
 
Does anyone know if you have to buy the whole new mirror assembly? I see that there are Toyota part numbers for just replacement mirror glass for heated mirrors. They are only $75 each. I wonder if I could just replace the glass in my non heated SR5 ones. I really don't need a new housing and the power adjust is fine. Thoughts?

Have to buy the whole mirror assembly, can't just buy the heated mirror. Your SR5 does not have the electrical connection mate that is in the heated mirror housing, nor the wiring. AFAIK no one has been able to do this; and it's been discussed.

Only other option is to go Muth or buy Toyota/aftermarket.

Does anyone know if the early 2000-05 heated mirrors would fit a first gen Tacoma? I am looking to find some that I could install on my 98. All I hear about aftermarket is don’t waste your $$$.

No Heated Mirrors??????

I bought 2 new heated mirrors from Amazon (GoldShrine) for my 2004 4Runner SR5, plugged them in (5 wire to 5 wire), started the truck and hit the rear defroster button and they never heated up???? Any thoughts out there?
