Anyone with a single din dvd player in their 3rd Gen? Fold out kind?

Any issues with it folding out and hitting the gear shift? I have an automatic....I was going to put it in the top slot.

Also, what pocket would I need to put below it?

AND, would it connect to the wiring harness that is already behind my aftermarket? I had to hardwire that one to the 4Runner wires.

bad idea. it will cover your ac and heater controls

I think you are right. Upon further inspection, I don't think the gear shift will be in the way at all. I don't really care about the A/C controls b/c I can just set those before I turn it on.

The single din screen shouldnt hit the shifter as long as u put it on the top of the slot and a pocket underneath. This will cover ur a/c controls but like u said u can set that before hand but if u really want a screen id say u should get a double din bc the single dins have a tendency over time to have motor failure which will cause the screen to bc stuck in the "in position" or on the "out position"... Just a thought before u finalize ur purchase.

Yeah, that is really my main concern...but this one is brand new in the box...on Amazon it sells for $645 and the lady locally wanted $400 for it, but said she would take $250....it is the AVH-5200BT

your a smart guy pipe, i feel you know what is in your own best intrest, that said my double din unit wasn't much more and it's got built in hands free,video camera capabilities,built in dvd/divx, and ports for s/d card ipod aux and rear head rest montiors,and expansions for gps, (you need the gps unit that connect to it and that's it) the only draw back i've found is you can't stream your music via blutooth.

i got it put in a few months ago in july and really like it, looks stockish and all around good unit.

that said a single din might be nice if your considering adding a cb at some point in the future, but other then that it might be worth it to just sit on that cash and wait till you can get another $100 or so and get a double din...
but like i said man, your a smart guy and know what you need more then i do, just thought i'd brag about how cool my h/u is and see if i can bring you to the dark side, lol

izzard, I was looking at the 3200 last month...just the non BT version...I almost pulled the trigger on it when Amazon had the discount that took it to $275 shipped...but decided to hold off.

Bottom line is that I probably won't be using the dvd feature near as much as I would like to think...but who knows. My 4Runner is our travel car...so I definitely think that I need one eventually. Just thought that Pioneer in my OP was a great deal...and it is a 7" screen. Hmmm..................

well then why not just get some cheap-o explode unit until your ready to add the rear monitors and have dvd?

both units are dvd the flip out one and the non flip out one, i just think for $375 opposed to $275 you could be done with it and happy to know you won't have to buy another h/u down the line, you can just start adding the cameras gps and rear monitors as the cash comes.


sounds like you got a few options man, i guess it really comes down to if you can afford the other $100 or not, and if you think the single din flip out unit will do it for you, i personally just hate buying something like that then in a year or 2 deciding to go out and buy the one i really wanted then have to try and sell the first unit, it turns in to a big head ache you almost always loose money and really i just get frustrated with the waste of time, all i suggest is you avoid doing that cause it sucks, get the unit thats going to stay with your truck until you sell it or it breaks, you know?

Good point. Does the 3200 that you have in your Runner have the ipod connection on the back or the front? Also, how do you feel about the height of the monitor...my 4Runner is a 2001...so some of the screen would probably be blocked a little by the gear shifter.

no the ipod comes from the back into the glovebox, the front has usb,s/d and aux

the gear shift will block the view from the back but both people in the front can watch it no problem, you need to put a toggle switch in there to make it so you can watch the dvd player on while driving

also, i sold my i-pod and just use the sd card now, 16 gigs of music for only $30 bucks from wall mart, i have 3 of them that are full and have each one labeled like rock,blues,jazz and punk/ska/rap and bluegrass,country,metal

each 16 gig sd card hold about 4000 songs on it, so with 48 gigs of music for under a $100 it's a pretty good deal.... and no stupid cords anywhere and it's all nice and neat you don;t even notice the card in there, you can see it in the pics the little blue thing that sits in it.

so now i use my smart phone as my ipod when walking around working out ect and the sd cards as my ipod in the truck, the way tech is now there is really no reason to buy an ipod when your phone is the same exact thing but can call people, lol, you know what i'm saying?

I think you can ground a brake wire or something to avoid the toggle switch.

i thought that too, but grounding doesn't work you need to ground then unground to activate, right now i just have it connect to the latch on my glove box so i want it to work i open and close the glove box and it turns the dvd player on, lol

fyi, the 4200 i think is a better unit, i think that one allows you stream music over blutooth so if you have pandora or some sort of internet radio on your phone you can blast it through your trucks system, i really wanted that and thought my unit would do that, but it doesn't.

if you care it's called the A2DP profile and it can have built in bluetooth but not that profile, if it doesn't have the A2DP profile you can't stream music with your blutooth, you can still make phone calls via blutooth but no music

I would say if ur gonna get a newer one then u should defnitely go with the 4200dvd over the 3200 versions if u want the hidden ipod cable. I have a Pioneer Avic-D3 but was glad bc i got a really good deal on mine from a seller on CL.

I love the 4200dvd but the only thing i saw wrong with it is that it doesnt come standard with navi but if its not essential to u then its perfect. U could always buy the adapter if u want for it tho.

i agree but not for the ipod cable, the 3200's have the ipod cable from the back as well.

i say get the 4200's so they have the bluetooth profile for streaming music.

oh they do? when i was debating on getting one i couldnt get a definite answer on that and saw many ppl use the usb and aux plugs with the ipod cable that adapts to those... But ya streaming music is nice. I just ordered the mic to my bluetooth module so everything will function properly so im excited about that too!

My buddy has a fold out one in his taco. It covers the ac control but it really isn't a big deal. I know where everything is anyways, so you can just slip your hand behind it.

yeah they do,but you have to buy an adapter/cord for the ipod hook up @ the back so i think most just use the usb or aux instead of paying for the cable... the 3200 i bought came with the mic which i thought was nice, the best place for placement is either on the visor or along side the window some where, putting it on the windshield is just too far away and i have to raise my voice for people to hear me, other then that the hand free is very nice i can hear people great it does a good job of switching between music and phone, it d/l's your contact info into the system so you can either dial with your phone or with your head unit.
