Does it only work with Apple's shitty products?

Will it lock out my android?

I have to agree that I'm not really thrilled over having an audio/nav system that's specific to a certain brand of phone.

Entune is 100% trash, tho.

naturally, Apple CarPlay is designed for use with Apple iDevices. but really this is just the first credible step toward bridging the gap between our smartphones and dumb cars: touchscreen display mirroring. long term, i don't think (hope not) the industry is dumb enough to ensnare customers in any platform lock-in... it's just easier to target Apple devices first because there are fewer models to support.

so fret not, i'm sure some similar form of support for your shitty Android is just around the bend. :D

It won't lock out your android. Your android will still work via USB and bluetooth audio streaming like it always has. If you have the pandora app playing on your phone, and your phone supports the more recent bluetooth profiles, you'll still see the artist and song info and be able to skip to the next song. Still quite functional. You sure are a glass half empty kind of guy... lots of anger.

The just released Entune units work fine... they are a nice improvement over the ones that came out in 2011. The problem is that most apps just don't make sense in cars. Movietickets? Opentable? They just aren't useful. Doing a Bing search while you are still in the house, syncing the results in the car, and navigating to that address IS useful, though. And it works well. The problem is that there is a lot of to-do about phone integration and it just doesn't make a lot more sense than bluetooth audio streaming and some way of doing voice commands (play Smashing Pumpkins' 1979) to play music or navigate somewhere.... which is what pretty much all of them do right now anyway. This Facebook, OpenTable, etc just isn't that useful on a daily basis to be worth the hassle. I'm an Apple fanboy, but CarPlay or further phone integration doesn't do much for me. Bluetooth audio streaming with track skip controls works perfect for me.

I would say entune is only 90% trash, the other 10% works relatively well. It is like space shuttle electronics, you use old and reliable versus new and unstable.

The whole idea behind carplay and mirrorlink is that IF you have a supported phone/device you can use it in lieu of the built in system. It is an additional feature. It does not replace the current OS, it runs on top of it. The old system still exists and is usable. What sense would it make to remove it?

ask the teeming hordes for whom installing an aftermarket head unit is at the top of their post-purchase to-do list.
 
personally most of the entune crap is worthless to me. hells he nav isn't the greatest but since you cant get a LE w/o it oh well.

I will be sticking with my crappy old 5" garmin until I get the new 7" version. I still like the quick/usability functions the garmin has over the nav in the LE. little things make the garmin worlds better than the nav. like auto zooming when slowing down or zooming out while at highway speed.

I all care about is the that the backup screen is a lot bigger than the wardens backup mirror version, BT audio and phone/msg system works so I don't have to handle the phone while driving.

Yes Entune is barely useable but it was needed when phone data service was out. What I need is a iPad mini dash mounted with an ear piece to control Siri in a system that can gather data via GPS! :) I'd prefer that than nstalling Carplay. Then I'd have an IPad mini too. Controlled by an earpiece instead of steering wheel.

You are taking my quote out of context. Phone mirroring works on top, like an application, which is what it is. Like photoshop on your PC. I wasn't implying leave the old hardware and add new hardware to it. :)

I had a pretty decent aftermarket JVC with touchscreen and mirrorlink in my last 4runner. It was pretty sweet, it worked well but as with most things tech they stop supporting it 4 months after you buy it. Instead they want you to buy a new head unit that is essentially the same, with 3 new features. Frankly the current modus is BS, these things should be upgradable to some extent, yet old methodology still stands and we have to junk perfectly good hardware for piss-ant software upgrades. Yippee more junk for the landfill or kids in India to strip the good stuff out.

Aftermarket stuff is okay, it just happens to be closer to current tech stream than OE, the fact of the matter is it still suffers with upgrade paths the same as nearly everything else.

While entune comes up with some pretty funny interpretations of what I said, it's depressing that I just spent $40K for a laugh.

People hate iDrive (BMW), but I found it way better than entune.
 
I bought my wife a iPotato 5s in February for 600 bucks.

The new iOS just took up all the free space in her 16GB to the point that she had do delete half of her music just to update her damn phone. Ironically the update came out the same time the iPotato 6 came out--how convenient that Apple bricks her phone so she has to buy a new one.

Apple has a policy of planned obsolescence and cares more about the appearance of their products.

I think this system needs to be an option, since I sure as hell don't feel like having one of their dodgy products in my car... and that I think iPhones are overpriced shit compared to Android. I'm not a hipster writing my next screenplay at Starbucks nor am I pretending to be a professional photographer/videographer so I feel better about spending 4 grand for a computer.

i'm sorry, but what part of an aftermarket head-unit doesn't seem "optional" to you? if you don't want a CarPlay unit there are plenty of other options available.

This will be integrated into Toyotas at the end of the decade the same way the SYNC was...

You can't even get a Ferd without a SYNC these days.

truth is, the tech race simply runs way too fast for any of the auto manufacturers. by the time they pick a horse it's already gasping for air with a loaded gun hovering over its head.
