You do know iOS only accounts for maybe 10% of the world's mobile devices right? Toyota isn't building vehicles just for the USA.

All Toyota really needs to do is build a wireless charging docking station and provide access to the data from certain sources plus access to control certain parameters of the vehicle and then have an app. Almost all phones now already have a 5-6" phone screen and wireless charging plus BT 4.0. There's not a lot more that we need other than some integration with the vehicle. Then you can use any device you wish.

The Taiwan model in the pic has a Nexus 7 that comes with the car and has a custom skin for Toyota. No reason we couldn't just use a phone for the same function.

It's not a closed platform locking you into iOS via your car. It's a protocol for the head unit (which can still function as a regular head unit) to communicate with IOS devices, using the iPhone to do the processing of the Apps that get pushed to the head unit. Think of it as attaching an Apple TV to the head unit and allowing it to access the apps on your phone. The only hardware component should be the communications bus whether that be usb or the Bluetooth module and probably a more robust processor in the headunit. The rest is software. You will most likely eventually see vehicles that support bot CarPlay and android auto.
