Still can't decide if I should upgrade or just keep my iPhone 5...the new features are great I'm just not sure if they are worth using my upgrade for.

I think that 5S offers more compared to 5 than going from 4 to 4S. Three things jump out: A7 64-bit (for some future-proofing and enhance performance in upcoming apps), TouchID (makes life easier!), and camera. Camera is probably the least difference maker, but according to Anandtech, Apple did it right by staying with 8MP and bigger sensor & pixels.

I can't imagine who these people are who switch from phone to phone all the time. What's more, switching wildly different platforms like its normal or something.

I've used an iPhone since 2007 - but couldn't care less about f'ing quad cores or if there is some "better faster" phone out there. It's what works for me and I'll never change, I used motorolla phones prior. I'd probably say the same thing if I'd used android all these years (wait they were way late per usual pc non-innovation) but the idea of switching back and forth for more SD gigabutts is the epitome of dumb.

Looking forward to the 5S upgrade, first new iPhone since June '10 (which is what I'm posting on right now and still works great sans the battery life.)

I'm not going to throw away all iPhone tricks I've learned in seven years for more chipset wankles.

Additional cores don't always mean anything other than shorten battery life...which explains the ever increasing size of batteries on Androids.

In fact, since it is a phone, cores don't mean jack!

Calling someone you don't even know ignorant is at best immature and it's not much of an argument. In fact it's no argument.

That fact that Samsung is also slinging BS, doesn't make Apple's BS any less BSy, does it?

It's marketing. If you've watched any Apple event, it's about marketing so that you buy more product. Your shiny new iPhone 5s will not have 4GB of RAM, it will not be noticeably faster to 99.9% of the actual users, who actually use the phone, as a phone. It will not use all of the additional register space available. It will be years before the software is optimized for 64-bit, and by then, Apple will be slinging another "must have" "unapologetically plastic" phone to people like you. And you'll buy it. In fact, they'll be doing that to you about a year from now.

Finally, if cores aren't important, why are phone makers adding more? S4, LG G2, HTC One. I don't know. Clearly you know better.

And with that, I wish you well. Consider me schooled by your superior grasp of the facts.

Did you read the posts i pointed out? Apparently not. Post #69 is relevant and i will post it again here:

"The performance advantages of going to 64-bit very much depend on the entire software stack (kernel, drivers, compilers, apps) being optimized for 64-bit. The ability to address more than 4GB of memory is one clear advantage. But even if the smartphones today don't have 4GB of memory, there are some other performance advantages as well - provided that the entire software stack is optimized for 64-bit processing. The data paths, register files, caches, etc. are now 64-bit, so more data can be processed per clock than with 32-bit architecture - but the key here is that the compiler (part of the software development kit) must know how to take advantage of the wider data paths and 64-bit resources. If the compiler is optimized, then the kernel, drivers, and apps (which are compiled with that compiler) will see performance boost. I would expect that integer operations, and especially floating point operations (which often need 64-bit data representation), would be faster. Data-intensive games in particular will stand to gain the most if they are properly compiled and optimized.

When Apple said that the iOS kernel, drivers, etc. have been "re-engineered for 64-bit", I suspect that they did a lot of performance tuning that I mentioned above.

In addition, note that Apple also doubled the sizes of the register files in the A7. This means that more data can be kept in the register files, which can be accessed by the processor's computational units much quicker than the data in memory (or even in caches).

Note also that Apple mentioned "modern instruction set". I suspect that this means that the 64-bit instructions are optimized with the underlying 64-bit hardware. This is different from the Intel world where the performance of the existing x86-64 architecture is severely hindered by the old legacy stuff."

Now, for your second comment. Android is inefficient since software and hardware are not optimized together because you have so many manufacturers making Android. Android is horsepower-driven. It needs HP to run smoothly. Of course, HP comes at a cost (battery life). Thus, Android handsets need big batteries.

Did you ever wonder why Safari on Apple runs so smoothly and fast despite having a single-core processor...while Android Chrome needs dual cores to run almost as smoothly? Look it up.

Why do you think Windows phone is so darn smooth and quick despite being a lowly single core?

Despite Project Butter, Android still is power hungry to make it work well. This is FACT. Look it up before commenting please.

If you think that more cores is better, then you must think that Samsung GS4 with Exynos 5 OCTA to be supreme, right? It has EIGHT cores (dual quad cores to be exact). Yes, 8 cores. Fast? Not really. It is actually equal to Qualcomm's 2nd rate chip (S600), which is a quad-core. S800 is also a quad core and kills Exynos 5 OCTA in just about everything from CPU to GPU.

Apple A7? I don't know what it has. My guess is that it is dual core CPU with quad core GPU running at 1.7-2.0 GHz. All guesses. The beauty? It will likely do very well in battery life. And being a phone, it should run just fine.

In fact, i would venture to guess that A7 will kill Exynos 5 OCTA very easily...and probably beat Qualcomm S800 monster.

Remember, these early benchmarks (GPU) don't take into account OpenGL ES 3.0 support nor 64-bit processing.

HTC One uses S600.

Galaxy S4 uses S600 or Exynos 5 OCTA.

LG G2 uses S800.

And yeah, your post reeks of ignorance. :)

Another way to look at this...

Apple states A7 is 2x faster than A6. And in the benchmarks above, it is true. However, the benchmarks above are not optimized for the current graphics standard (OpenGL ES 3.0) nor 64-bit.

CHAIR, who is a developer of Infinity Blade series, stated that with 64-bit processing and using the latest graphics standard, Apple A7 is almost FIVE TIMES faster than A6.

So, will A7 be the chip to beat in 2013? Very likely to be so. It is innovative and class-leading. Cores? Don't need no stinking cores if you know how to design a chip to work with an 64-bit optimized system!

Lets look at Android...when will they make the transition to 64-bit? Not for a long while...probably one or two years from now at least is my prediction!! Samsung said, "Not too soon...." :D

2. I didn't need to read your posts. Of course Apple optimized their compile for their architecture. That won't materially change the experience for people who use the phone, as a phone. So, it's BS just to get the sheeple to feel good about upgrading. Maybe at the high end if you're encoding/decoding video or moving huge files around maybe. That's an edge case.

3. If you optimize your code for more cores, it'll make the phone run faster. It'll also use more battery. Yup. So you're right. Keep ignoring the fact that more cores can equal higher performance and continue to focus on battery life.

4. The next time we're in a benchmark contest, I'm sure you'll win. I'll be using my phone...as a phone.

5. By this time next year, the majority of apps will still be 32-bit, Apple will be trying to sell you a new phone, with more cores and more memory, and probably a bigger screen and Phil will be telling you it's the greatest phone everrrrrrrrr.....

Enjoy your new phone. It'll help Phil make his bonus number next year.

For those who think cores and GHz are everything, READ PAGE 2 OF REVIEW. And yeah, these Anandtech folks KNOW what they are talking about!

A7: dual core CPU at 1.3 GHz.
