As in the options were idyllwild or big bear and if there was already going to be a group in idyllwild, why not run there with everyone. Think there's talk of black mountain too, so little bit for everyone from easy to hard.

Doesn't matter to me either way. I definitely want to run with both groups but I haven't been out with the t4r clan for awhile now. Sounds like there's still quite a bit closed up the mountain though.
 
Maybe for the trails in GVL but not in Big Bear. Where I go there are no gates to be closed. There would be plenty to do up here

Black mountain truck trail is 1)still closed and 2) easy as hell.
The only trail in idyllwild that offers a little challenge is 4s21 (?) indian mountain thats located on the way up bee canyon. Thats rated as a black diamond but not sure why.
 
Only after snow melt do they rate it that cause of the gnarly ruts like the size of fault lines, lol. We just did it and come to find out it was closed but sign was posted on the opposite end where we exited.haha
Steering rack is now whacked way out...

But during summer you see them change it to a blue which it should be normally, except maybe 2 spots on the trail.

I am in for April 29-30 if it’s in Big Bear. My wife has been asking to go there and it will be my way to finally get her to go on a 4x4 trip. She is a nurse and our schedules usually clash.

Big Bear is 1 hour for me Idyllwild is 3 with no traffic.

I have been ready to run since the last Idyllwild trip. She just gave me the green light if it’s a go.
 
What he said. I did the trails in Idylwild and the most challenging one was not very challenging and was really really short. Maybe 1 hour run time.

Big bear and the greater area is a much better location for off road adventures. The Idylwild roads are basically dirt roads which for the most part are Suburu friendly.

Just thinking this group is comprised of LA, Ventura, Orange, Riverside, San Berdoo and SD Counties. How about Stoddard Wells? Easy drive for the SB and RS folks and almost even for every one else.
 
Stoddard Wells is even further North than Big Bear. It's more suited for motorcycles and lizards. :banana:

Personally I would rather be in the forest than the desert. Idyllwild was fun but it was mostly a dirt road without any difficulty. I would like a few small hills to climb. At least a reason to put it in 4Hi or 4Lo other than just to see if it works. Maybe even someone could get stuck and 10 guys would be racing to see if they can be the first one to get there with their traction mats. :mod:

I don't want to start ripping fenders off but my 4Runner wants to do what a 4Runner can. I do not like running off road solo.
 
If Idyllwild is a better run than let's do it.

I ran to Alabama Hills, this past weekend so logging 650 miles on a day trip is not a problem for me. However, I know some would think that is a too much driving.

Just want to be inclusive as our group is a huge territory. In the future maybe we should do a Gorman run for the Northern So-Cal members and Wildomar for our Southern So-Cal members.

There's a couple people going to Gorman this weekend on TW. I'll probably swing through Friday or Saturday and try to hook up with them since I'll probably be up in Lake Isabella Thursday.

Otherwise for this I don't care where we end up, I was just throwing out suggestions and I get it that people want to push their rigs too. I'll let [MENTION=60694]TheSentinel[/MENTION] make the decision since ultimately he's the one that's setting up this meet.
 
Ah....finally a day off from work. Thanks for all of the feedback guys. We will definitely keep those areas in mind for future runs, but I wanted to stick to the IDY/Big Bear areas to encourage a decent sized group. @GVL what other areas up there would you recommend? I was thinking maybe a Cleghorn to Pilot Rock run, or we could do Clark's Grade on up.

A couple of routes I'm thinking of:
1a. Pilot Rock via Cleghorn: 2N47>>Silverwood Lake (138)>>2N36>>2N33 (Pilot Rock)>>3W14>>Lake Arrowhead
1b. Pilot Rock via Monument Peak: 2N49>>2N49>>2N45>>2N63>>138>>2N36...
There are difficult bypasses for those that desire a challenge.
2. Reserved for a GVL recommendation
3. Mill Creek>>Clarks Grade>>Big Bear (Is Clarks Grade open yet?)

As much as I'd like to do another IDY run, its not exactly an ideal run for a two forum run unless we are doing Thomas Mtn, Bee Canyon to Pine Cove just isn't as satisfying for a large group IMHO.

Forest Road 3N16 is closed from Crab Flats Campground to Big Pine Campground due to storm damage. Alternate route is via Forest Road 3N14 through Fawnskin (Hwy18 / Hwy 38)

My goal is to have a route finalized this week. I've been hella busy, but am looking forward to getting the SoCal group together again.
 
I don't know about that 3n16 closure (last time I went it was open) but it can probably be bypassed. On the bright side my phone is forecasting snow today and the next few days. If it snows heavily enough there could still be some then.

My vote is Big Bear for obvious reasons. A better place for meeting though is in front of the fire station in Fawnskin. Its nice and open so you can see the group as you approach, its right next to the dirt roads so its perfect for airing down if need be and you can get good line up shots. That's my 2 cents
 
I might be able to make this run, however my work cycle is going into full swing as training rotations are starting. Not sure of what my communication capability will be and I will be 100% stock with street tires and hopefully have my t-case leak fixed by then.

Seconded. Cleghorn is closer and easier to get to for the majority of us. Also gives me a chance to try some of the bypasses I had to skip last time because I didn't have my extended brake lines on yet.
 
I'm ready for a big bear or Cleghorn run, I've been wanting to go on a run with this forum! Let's do it and I hope 4wd is a must on the chosen trails
 
Interested in this run, would be my first ever. How intense are these trails? I do not have 4WD, would that be needed on these trails? and is this an overnight run with camping and everything? Or can we meet up with you guys early Saturday and run the trails all day with you guys? Thanks.
