Are 285's a hassle (or is there any hassle at all)?

Hey guys. I just got a mag grey 2013 trail and have saved to hook it up. I am getting an icon stage 2 (3" lift), wheels and tires to start. This will be 85% short commuter and 15% weekend toy. I have seen loads of wheels that I like, but all of them seem to be 9 inches wide. I know that I can fit the tire that I want (ko2) on that width safely if it is a 285, but was wondering if re-gearing, gas mileage woes, trimming, etc is worth it (or even a real concern). Option 2 would be get 275's on wheels that I am less thrilled about. Option 3 would be to put the 275 on a 9 inch wide rim, which will be off spec and makes me nervous. Thoughts/experiences? I realize there are many threads on this, just wanted a fresh take....

You don't need to re-gear on 285s, nor do you need to trim (I had to lose my front mud-flaps, gas mileage took maybe a 1.5mpg hit.

Hardly a huge deal.

I am running a 17x9 wheel with a negative off set so the backspacing is about 4.53 inches. I did have to trim but not a big deal. Now I am running a 34 and get a little rub but I think it is due to my alignment being crap....YEAH LONG TRAVEL IN THE NEAR FUTURE!!!!!

I ran an Icon stage 2 on stock trail rims with 285 MTZ and had zero rubbing. Not just on road but off road, full flex as well.

I do however rub now with a small negative offset. Just on front mud flaps, minor.

285s are easy. Really depends on the rim and alignment more than the tire. Usual need is to push the fender liner in the front forward a little and that is it.

Why not get an 8" rim with the proper backspacing. 4-4.5 or stick with the stock rims.

9" wide rims will work if you get the correct backspacing. Shoot for 4.5 as a min on 9" rims.

I think I am going to go big with bf Goodrich all terrain ko2 285/70r17 on fuel revolver 17x9" with 1mm of offset and 5inches of back spacing. Should be good with a 3 inch lift... Right? So the issue here is that no one is going to be able to predict exactly what your results / issues are going to be, man. You got some very good advice above and a link that will confirm what they told you. With that said, you're changing your entire wheel and tire size from stock to one with an entirely different set of variables. To some extent you're going to have to be willing to pull the trigger on the setup you like and make adjustments as needed.

The good news is that you're treading on fairly well explored territory here, and it sounds like what you're planning should work out fine. Good luck and enjoy your upgrades!

5 inches of back spacing seems like a bit too much. I seem to remember several aftermarket UCAs... requiring a max of 4.5 or 4.75. Why not just get a proper sized wheel. Again. ideal wheel size is 17x8-8.5 4.5 to 4.0 backspacing. Check out FN wheels and SCS wheels. Both offer perfect fits for a 5th gen.

17x8.5 4.30(-10mm) Stealth Custom F5 with bf all terrain ko2 275/70 and i rub at full lock with 2.5 front lift stock uca.

5 inch back spacing you probably will get tire rub maybe even on the UCA as stated. With a 9" width you want a negative offset I think around -12 would give you about 4.53" of back spacing.

- Turn the wheel, see where it rubs
- Turn the wheel the other way
- Heat that area with a heat gun, push in with a hammer

Rinse and repeat until no more rubbing. Same idea with trimming but cut instead of heat and pushing.

I had some stuff removed because of a hidden winch mount so I don't know if it will make a difference but I removed the bolts holding the inner fender to the bottom of the bumper and removed the plastic nuts that were in the bumper. I then moved the inner fender to be totally on top of the bumper and then drilled through the holes in the bumper to create new bolt holes in the inner fender. I then used bolts, nuts, and washers to hold it in place. Then trimmed the fender for clearance. It came out great and was very easy.

I'll be tackling this the next couple days as well. Getting the tires mounted on Six Shooters with 285 70 17 KO2, alignment on Friday and hopefully some heat and I'll be good. I've been spending some time under the 4Runner and it doesn't seem the liner mod will work for the 14-15. Plastic is set up a bit differently. Will post results as soon as I can.

I have the Stealth 6 wheels with 285/70 Duratracs, but needed the BMC. I have the toytec Boss lift. I am so glad I have the 4.56 gears with the bumpers, sliders, and skids. Good luck, enjoy.

Here she is, 285 70 17, bit of a rub but doesn't look too bad. I'll be taking the heat gun to her today. I'll update with with the results in a bit hopefully itll be enough. Alignment scheduled for today and will continue to work on the liners. Enjoy!
