Are these engines supposed to tick soo loud??

ive had a few 4th gen 4runners and 3rd gens, the 3rd gens engines always sounded quiet, the 4th gen i thought were a little loud with the ticking, i thought it was something wrong until i went to the dealer and they said its perfectly normal. now i purchased a 2010 and its even LOUDER, i can hear it ticking on idle from inside the car, the oils clean and full, is this normal??

All the Toyota dual-VVTi designs tick like that. It's a combination of thin oil, timing chain adjusting magic, and lifter tick.

I personally care very little about this, as long as the engine runs as long as a Toyota engine normally runs.

My 2007 Tundra sounds like a baby diesel with the tick. Something I have come to accept over 81k and still runs great

I don't think Toyota has ever made an engine that didn't tick. When the ticking stops that's when its time to be concerned :boink:

You should listen to a 22-RE...now that is a loud petrol engine!

The 1GR-FE isn't a quiet or smooth engine, but I wouldn't describe mine as making a ticking sound, especially one that can be heard inside.

However, my last car was a TDI, and the injectors on that thing are so fricking loud (Louder then any other part of the engine), that maybe I am numb to that...

The ticking can be fixed with a new exhaust and CAI.

My 2010 sounds diesel-ish also, but nothing compared to my 1978 BJ40 on a cold morning...

My 2013 TE doesn't tick at all. Of course it's only got about 2600 miles on it.
