Ash tray with 2 12V outlets. Got a question for those who upgraded

Ok, can someone verify which plug is used when you plug in the ash tray with dual outlets? I took a picture of what I think the second plug is for but I'm not sure:

The plug I believe is going to be used is the one with a red and green wire.

If you updated to the dual 12V outlet which plug(s) did you have to use?

I think it will use both big and small white connectors, because it also has to light up the bulbs there.

It was a long time ago that I installed it, but if I remember correctly, there was only one way to install the wiring. Toyota is pretty good about that.

The reason I want to know is I went a cheaper route than buying the ash tray that has dual 12V.

I just bought another ash tray with the one 12V for less than $20 and I was planning to cut out the 12V unit and just splice it into the wiring. It seems that Toyota was smarter than me and decided to use a different connector, so I'm just going to splice the wires. The thing is, I need to know which wire the second ash tray plugs into.

If someone can pop out the ash tray I'd appreciate it.

On mine, the wires going to the cigarette lighter are pink/blue stripe and white/black stripe. The power outlet is hardwired black and white. Going to the light around the lighter is green/siver dots and white/black stripe.

Thanks man, that was a HUGE help. I took a volt meter to it and verified what you just said and for sure the white with a black stripe was the ground and the pink with blue stripe was a good 12V (Actually read 13.99V, the same as the stock cigarette lighter)

And this is the reason I asked:

I would like the dual 12V, but I'm too cheap to pay the $70 for it so instead I bought a stock single 12V outlet from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7990646716&category=33695

I spliced into the wires mentioned above and now I have 2 12V. I'll be purchasing very soon the Garmin C330 and I'll tuck the second 12V underneath the center console for the C330.

To get the 12V outlet from the stock ash tray, I had to cut off the little clips that hold in in place. See picture attached and the arrow

I cut the connector off and then I spliced it into the big white plug on the wire loom.

The white with silver dots from the 12V connects to the pink with blue stripe on the big white connector

The black with silver dots from the 12v connects to the white with black stripe wire on the big white connector.

If you wanted to get fancy I guess you could cut a hole in the little cubby compartment in front of the arm rest and place the second 12V there.

Since I'll be using this for my GPS unit, I'm going to be tucking this underneath the center console.

sorry.. i'm still confused..

i have only one cig lighter on my console. i am hard wiring a converter off of this cig lighter. i see a white wire w/ silver dots and a black wire w/ silver dots coming off of my cig lighter. aren't these the positive and the ground?

please remember, i am one small step above retarded. have patience!

In all seriousness, yes you are right that those are the ground and positive wires of the single cig plug. What I did is tap into the plug that plugs into the second outlet if you were to buy the adapter that has the second outlet.


This is what I tapped into for my second plug.

the white with a black stripe was the ground and the pink with blue stripe was a good 12V

Or, you could tap into the white wire w/ silver dots and a black wire w/ silver dots.

makes sense! i like that more.. ok.. going that route..

do you know if there is a separate fuse in the fuse box for that combination of wires? that would be pretty cool.. even though my converter has it's own fuse.

It should be fused already since this is the same wiring that is used if you go the factory dual 12v route.
