I have cut down the 5th gen since they came out and praised the 4th gen V8.
Well I traded in my 03 V8 last week on a 2014 Limited 4x4 with 3rd row seats. I also traded in my 2011 Avalon. My wife and I are getting down to one vehicle and the Avalon while great on long trips did not suit or needs as well as a 4runner. My 03 was just getting old enough that I wanted to start fresh. It only cost me a little over $10k after trading in both vehicles. I have never traded in a vehicle before but I did not feel like dealing with selling two vehicles and I thought they were fair with me. The old 4runner had intermittent speedometer not working issues, transfer case actuator leak ($2500 fix), needed new tires and the clear coat on the roof was starting to deteriorate. The salesman I bought the Avalon from sent me a email several weeks ago advertising a new 4runner they had discounted (list $45,443 down to $41,500). I have not drove the new 4runner much yet but it is starting to grow on me. I like everything so far except the sluggish acceleration on initial takeoff and the excess engine noise. My 03 V8 has instant torque and would really set you back in the seat while sounding supper smooth. My V8 sounded like it was just playing while the 2014 sounds like it does not really want you to push it that hard. The 3.5 in the Avalon could smoke the front tires but the new 2014 4runner feels like it could not spin the tires on loose rocks. I just have to remind myself not to pull out in front of someone quickly and expect it to go. OK I will quit complaining. I love the smart key on the 2014. I still find myself reaching in my pocket for the key when I approach it. It handles and corners really nice and basically drives about like my 03 did.
