at 52000 miles, leaky front shocks already? Normal?

I am a little bummed out that my front passenger shock is leaking already only with 52000 miles on the vehicle. Its a limited. So, what do you guys suggest I replace it with? Don't wwant to pay dealer mark-up for factory shocks. KYB, Bilstein (a little rough compared to stock, had them on my 80 LC)?

Its this normal to wear out this quickly? Happend to you guys?

Normal driving so far. Only played in the dirt a couple of time and tread lightly on dirt truck trials for no more then 60 miles.

Wife + sale at the mall + curb = blown shock. At 6 years and 52k I would say that this is totally normal. Shocks are not lifetime parts, and will not last forever. Driving style and road conditions will heavily weigh into how long something like this lasts, just like brake pads. The least expensive upgrade around here is the Bilstein 5100's. Search and you will find a ton of info on them.

Not unusual, but I'm sure didssapointing.

In case you didn't know, with a Limited edition you have Xreas, the shocks are cross linked and have fluid lines and a small reservoir along the frame under the driver and passenger door. So basically you would have to replace them all and get rid of that if you went with bilsteins. Occasionally you will find someone on here giving away or selling cheap their entire system, but having taken mine out, I think it would be easier to go aftermarket. Honestly it's probably much cheaper to just take your truck to a shop and have all four shocks replaced with bilstein 5100's, plus they do have a lifetime warranty (still have to send it in for replacement). Personally I found Xreas to be stiffer on and offroad than the bilsteins, but just my opinion, very subjective.

I understand that suspension parts wear, but shocks going bad at 50k miles is not normal. Shocks should last 100k before thing should start springing a leak under normal road driving conditions (any off roading doesn't apply).

This sounds more like a Chevy type premature failure than a Toyota part. When the ZL1s were having their mag ride fail at 50k miles, guys were like "welp, its a chevy, so new ones are needed", but this is a Toyota....

This is quite disappointing.

I had 38,000 on my 2011 when I bought it. I noticed after a few weeks that the driver's side strut was soaked.

Solution: 5100s!!!

$399 from toytec + installation!

Just hit the washboard roads up near lake pleasant again last night. this time a bit faster, still smooth as glass!!!

What's so special about the Xrears compare to the 5100s? The truck does handle great on the road which I like. I know, I know, that's not what they are for, but I still have to drive the on ramps.

wear and leak that is different type failure. I would say leaking is not normal at 5oK miles.

I can't remember if I ever did have a shock leak..
I do have bilsteins on all my vehicles over the last 15 yrs they do work for many more years compared to other manufacturers I have used ..

any off road driving does damage the shocks much sooner .

Maybe she'll understand dollars and cents, a set of bilsteins with install are probably $500. To have a dealer fix Xreas, probably $1500-2000. It's a nice on road system, but once it leaks you have to spend some coin to repair/replace because of the cross linked fluid complicated system.

I loved it for on road, but not enough to EVER spend the money to replace it.

One of my bilstein 5100's started leaking within 30k miles, but the beauty is the lifetime warranty as I'll just send it in and get a new one.

50k is in the normal range for any vehicle. Luckily we do not have GM/delco garbage components on our trucks, but shocks do not last 100k period. They don't have to spring a leak to stop damping correctly. Shocks are a normal wear item and that's why XREAS sucks.

I would not recommend KYB. I put them on my last truck and they were worthless in less than 10k miles.

Just Google XREAS and go to you tube to watch a demonstration. Big difference.

If you are interested in replacing the front shocks back to stock , I have the xreas shocks and springs still mounted as a strut that you can have at a fraction of a cost of what you will buy at the dealer. I pulled them off my 2013 Limited when I went to the Bilstein 6112/5160 shocks. They were removed by a professional 4x4 shop according to the FSM instructions so there is no fluid loss. Should be plug and play. I have the rear xreas shocks too. PM if interested.

I got lucky in my 95 Tacoma 4x4 - I replaced factory shocks because they stopped dumping (not leaking) at 250k miles and 15 years. The second set has now 80k miles with no sign of use. They don't build cars like that anymore :

When I replaced my factory shocks (I guess around 50k?) they were so worn-out I bet they would have worked better with NO oil in them- as friction shocks, lol.

Replacing them is a huge improvement in every way.
