AT Tire Recommendations

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for some recommendations for some AT tires in 265/70/17. I've been reading the AT tire thread that [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] had started and I was leaning towards some Cooper Tires. The only thing is no one in Hawaii carries that brand. I'm kind of hesitant to mail order Coopers if no shops out here have any experience with them.

I'm was looking at the BFG KO2 and the Toyo OC AT2, but I'm open to other suggestions.

I'm occasionally going off road (sand, dirt, and gravel roads) with most of my driving on highway. I would like a tire that has good on road wet traction since it does rain pretty hard in my area.

I hear BFG KO2 are not always good to balance

I hear Toyo OC AT2 are great

I have personal experience with Cooper A/T3 and they have been wonderful
 
FWIW - I have the Toyo AT2s. I'm not super impressed. They've never balanced well. I ended up with balancing beads in them after 4 trips to the tire shop. I've also punctured one on a rock straight through the tread.

Not sure what else I'd suggest. My personal favorite AT is Goodyear's ATS, but it's not available in a 285. They do make it in a 265 though, so it might be a good option.

So far, very happy with my Falken Wildpeak A/T3W's. As I mentioned on that specific thread, just a slight bit of rub on the mud flaps when locked left/right which can be fixed with a little heat gun persuasion.
Quiet on the highway (for an AT), confident in the rain and great on some light dirt trails.

No snow here so probably won't be tested until the winter and not sure if you'll ever need the "severe snowflake rating" where you're located. :bounce:

I like the look of the WildPeak AT3W. Are you running the P rated 265? The one concern I have is they list the tread depth as 14/32 only.
 
I've been shopping/researching for something similar. If I didn't care about sidewall looks, I'd probably be going Cooper AT3 or ATP. But I'm leaning towards KO2s and I'm also really interested in the Falken AT3W, but I can't give you any personal experience with either of those two.

If you're set on the Coopers, why nervous about having them shipped and installed? A tire's a tire, and if you are getting stock size, no big concern about running your spare until you can get a replacement shipped if you damage one.
 
From my personal experience

Best off road performance: Duratrac (nearly an MT but still quiet on pavement)

Best value and all around: Cooper ATP (cheapish, quiet, smooth,very long wearing, above average off road)

Second tier brands like Hankook or Falken are decent tires but have spotty quality control issues. Sometimes they are fine, but I have had many friends with balance/out of round/delamination problems.

Same boat as you.......after initially eliminating the KO2 and thinking I wanted either the Cooper AT3 or the Falken Wildpeak AT3, I'm back to the KO2. The looks of the Cooper just don't do it for me even though the P rated AT3 is probably all the tire I need, and no one carries the Falken around here and knows much about them.

I'm back to the KO2's........for E load tires, the ride seems to be pretty amazing on road from the people I know who have them, and their wet traction is terrific. Looks wise, they are just awesome.
 
I recently decided on Toyo OC A/T2 in LT245/75-17E - balanced well, drive nice (I have driven 30k miles on Toyo A/T on other 4x4 and really like.) as expected. Paid 207. OTD with lifetime balance and rotate.
 
My Cooper ATP's have been awesome. Got them for less than $1k OTD in load range E. After 50k miles they have way more than 60% tread life left. They look good, balanced the first time without much weight, preform well in every condition I have had them in and are the best AT tire value I have found yet. I am now officially a Cooper convert and will spread their praises where ever I go. My next tire will be the Cooper ST Maxx, just because I want them.
 
I've read some reviews about the Cooper AT3 having some issues with quality control and tire balancing in the past. Anyone know if it's still an issue?
 
Surprised the Cooper ATP's aren't as popular. The norm here is KO2 or Duratracs all da way.

Even though I only have 20k on my ATP's they've been fantastic. They drive well in the rain(I live in hilly Seattle), taken them on snow patched, loose dirt, and rock covered trails. Performed well in all aspects. My buddy has the KO2's and after taking our trucks through the rocky trails the edges off his tread blocks show chip marks while none of mine do.

ive read a fair amount lately on several AT tires, and the cooper at3's get a LOT of great reviews...then again cooper tires seem to be pretty awesome across the board

Yeah P rating for me. I am more than fine with that for what I'm doing. Again, light dirt trails for me.

If you want deeper, you'll have to the LT 18/32" depth and they weigh about 5-6 lbs more at each corner. I will see if I can get some pics up shortly.
 
I can't speak for any brands other than BFG, but I've got KO's on my Runner and KO2's on my work truck (Ford Ranger :rolleyes:). Best wet traction of any tires I've used over the years. Planning on getting a set of KO2's for the Runner when I go up in size.
