AT tires for an 06 Limited (18 inch wheels)

It is finally time for me to get some tires for my 2006 Limited. I figured I'd just by Bridgestone Revos because I had good experience with them on my Grand Cherokee a few years ago. But no. The Limited model comes with 18" rims and wants 265/60 R18 tires -- H rated! You can't get Revos in that size, and Revos aren't H rated. No AT tires are H rated, it seems.

Okay, so what to get? Maybe I don't really need AT tires. I haven't actually gotten stuck yet, but I do travel over some rough ground and I was looking forward to the extra security.

As long as I ignore the H requirement, there are a few choices: Dueler A/T D695, Firestone Destination A/T, GY SilentArmor, Michelin LTX A/T 2, and Yokohama Geolander A/TS.

Surely some of you guys have bought tires in this size. Please shower me with your wisdom!

I drive in the Sierra Nevada, so mud isn't a big issue, but snow is. In the summer, it's rocks. In between there's Interstate 80.

Don't worry to much about the H ratting. Be more concerned with the load rating of the tire. Make sure what ever tire you get it is rated the same or higher then the stock tires.

You can get 265/65/18 Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos w/ stock height. That size works for the spare too.

I think I remember your s/n. Your location says Truckee, CA. I think Uneek mentioned you before.
I think it was about Special Ordering your truck. I wonder if you have the exact identical truck as him & perhaps he mentioned about going to Northstar Resort.

The GY SA's have the snowflake. If you have to mess with chain inspection stations in your normal driving that may be a consideration.

All of the tires you listed with the exception of the 695 have been used by people here and are well liked. The 695 just hasn't been discussed/used much by members here; doesn't mean it's not a good tire I just haven't read anything on it.

I agree about the H rating thing. Unless you cruise at 100+mph for extended periods of time you don't need it.

Alternate sizes

Wow, this board is awesome.

I would like snow tires, but that is far from the primary consideration. And the chain inspectors never look at that stuff.

K.C, I considered changing size, but the closest size Revos come in is 275/65 R18 which are an inch bigger. The 265/65 R18's as pictured by icantsee, aren't Revos. I saw them at the tire store today, but I haven't researched the model. They didn't show up at Tire Rack.

I do remember Uneek, but I haven't spent any time on the board for quite a while so I'm a pretty lame community member. Also, my sig says Truckee, but I'm actually half-time in the Bay area.

Although not in 18's, I've run the Bridgestone REVO's, Firestone Destination AT's and Michelin LTX M/S's plus a few others on my 4Runners.

Hands down, I'll take the Destination AT's in a heartbeat over the others when it comes to security in PA winters and the occasional off road. I've also ran them on quite a few long distance round trips (Philly to Chicago twice, Philly to west KY, KY to Chicago too many times to count). They're also a good bit cheaper than the others.

I have over 25,000 miles on them and they look like they'll go another 25.

Toyota Limited wtih 18'' rims

Hey Denis, were almost neibours, I live just south of you in El Dorado Hills.

I also have an 06 with those STUPID 18'' rims (look great, but suck for tire options)

out of desperation I eventually just bought myself a set of stock 17'' toyo rims and put BFG M/Ts on them for fun.

So now I run the 18''s with road tires and 17''s for off roading

NOTE TO ANYONE FROM TOYOTA PRODUCT MANAGEMENT WHO READS THIS: kick the idoit who made the 18'' decision for me. moron!

Yep, 18's suck for tire choices. That was one of the many reasons I traded in the wife's G6. There were two tire choices.


As for my vote, givin the tire candidates, I would go for the Firestones. Just based on the recommendations here. Another thing I've seen is that tires work different when compared on different vehicles. I mean that a tire will work different when compared on say a heavy diesel pickup then the T4R.

I had looked at Tire Rack, which currently rates the Michelin LTX A/T 2 highest, although with small number of reviews.

I've also no found some Consumer Reports data. Their opinion is probably sound, but they don't test that many different tires. They rank the LTX A/T2 just below Revos, having mostly similar character except for tread life which is much better than that of Revos.

They actually rate Pirelli Scorpions and the Geolanders higher than either, as they seem to be particularly good at braking performance. Down lower in the ratings, but still good, are the Destination A/T. The SilentArmors are pretty low in the list.

If I could get them, I'd still go with Revos, but as it is I'm thinking Michelin.

You're right of course, Joe, and I tried to give hints of my usage in the original post. Off-roading is important to me, but I also have a Jeep Wrangler so the 4Runner is for lighter duty. It is especially good for a trip to, say, Death Valley where there is lots of long, fast highway coupled with nasty roads in the park.

Quiet highway performance is perhaps the highest requirement of all, but snow, ice, rocks, and dirt are all hazards I regularly face.

From El Dorado Hills, you might have pretty similar usage.

My tires are only 1300 miles old, but I always "start looking" for tires when I buy a new vehicle that has some weird wheel and tire size, like our Limited Toys with 18"ers...

Personally, I am looking at the Michelin A/T IIs if I find that I use the T4R off-road enough to warrant them. My '00 Tundra and '03 Trailblazer have ridden on OEM-sized Michelin LTX M/Ss since they became mine (those WERE the OEM tires on the Tundra BTW). I had both M/S and A/T on my Colorado, both worked great, the A/Ts were better for off-road obviously.

I can't see where the M/S model is available in 265/60-18s yet, if ever.

If I find that I am going to not venture off-road with it much, then the OEM Michelins seem fine so far, they are not that bad for a "factory balance job" IMO. I also saw some Pirellis at Tire Rack that didn't look that bad. I once had a 1987 IROC (well, back in 1987-1990)...and put a set of Pirelli on it once - rode and drove great, only got about 20k miles out of them though - they were way too soft. I would assume their truck and SUV tires would be a harder compound.

I bought the 17''s rims specifically because I think the best price I could get for BFG ATs was about 240 per tire in 18'' plus fitting.

So I bought the 17''s and went crazy and put a set of BFG MTs on them. but having said that, I am surprised (in dry weather) where the T4R fitted with the Dueler ATs (on my 18'' rims) will go

of course my 17''s with the BFG MTs will go almost anywhere, but they are noisy and they are squirrely on the highway at speed

can you post some pictures of the tires? i only saw them on tirerack but i want to see how they look on a 4R and the tread pattern too, thanks!

After several searches, I found a post that told me that just attaching a jpg would include it in the message. My mistake was trying to preview, which apparently doesn't work.

now i am wondering the performance..... since the tread is not too aggressive like the BFG A/T KO, i would love to see how these LTX in mud compare to KO. i know sometimes tread pattern doesn't mean anything of how a tire perform, but since tirerack rates these LTX in the top list, i hope they will do excellent like how they are rated.
