ATF Temp-How hot is too hot?

Just thinking out loud here.
Do any of the trucks experiencing high tranny heat problems have a body lift? I've read that you have to pull off the lower fan shroud to clear the fan after a body lift. Doing that would seriously cripple the stock fans efficiency.

you can reattach the fan lower section of the fan shroud after the body lift. but im not sure about the rest of the guys. im not running a bodylift

More data from me, after 11 months of daily driving with the B&M 70264 (bypassed factory cooler).

Summer around town - 170
Winter around town - 150

Summer on highway - 155
Winter on highway - 130

I saw my highest ATF temp this past friday night actually....sitting in traffic trying to get into Arrowhead stadium for the Chiefs vs 49ers preseason game. Sitting in stop and go traffic, never going more than 1-2 mph, for almost an hour, by the end of the hour the temp had climbed up to 204.

At the other end of the spectrum, last winter the temp only got up to 110, when it was 25 degrees outside, and I got on the interstate right away after a cold start. However this isn't a common occurrence for me. I've been a little suprised how well regulated the temp seems to stay with the 70264 as the only cooling, compared to the factory cooler as the only cooling. The overall temp window is a little bigger, but temps don't fluctuate very much on any given day. I'd have to guess that a solid 75% of my driving has the trans temp between 150-165.

^^^ notice how quicksilvr is on stock size tires, no armor ect. sure he has the SC but it doesnt sound like he flogs on his runner either -could be wrong but i doubt it. all his temps are in the acceptable range, i dont think he would enjoy the same if he had the 268 cooler, or even the cooler he has now, with all the extras like i am running or several other guys are running...

^ the kid is completely correct. I would want/need more cooling if I was pushing big tires, armor, etc around all day. Or wheeling a lot. I would probably run two 70264's if I was set up with all the aforementioned stuff.

curious if this is a needed/suggested mod for my runner. its a 2002 2wd v6 auto that will see no wheeling offroad but a dedicated daily driver. may occasionally pull a utility trailer with light load.

just do a search on "pink milkshake"... you make the call

do you have a temp gauge? i dont mean to sound like a prick, but my first thoughts and inclination was to call you a fool, for towing with the smaller of the two coolers...

Looks like I'm going to be installing another 70268 in series with this one along with doing a much needed drain and fill this weekend. Hopefully that's the end of money spending for a little while... :ybrick:

sorry man, im not here to sell you parts or labor, ect i got no "dog in the fight" all im here for is simply to see everyone enjoy as many trouble/failure free miles as possible. im not trying to make you go out and spend another sunday afternoon and $150 working on your truck ect. thats not it at all so i hope your not taking it that way. -i just look at it as if it were me id rather spend the $150-200 on a second cooler, new lines and a gauge now then $2500 on a new trans in a year or two, i got better places for $2500, like im sure you do as well... -vacation:car::plane::whoo:

haha, I'm not taking it personally. I know that's the right thing to do. my only reservation is that this is not my daily driver, so do I do the "right" thing or do I say fuk it, given that I doubt that the truck will see even 1000 miles a year

do you think to 70268's in series would affect engine cooling? My truck doesn't run anywhere near hot, but I'd be a bit concerned jamming another cooler in front of the the radiator. Am I over thinking it?

have you seen my set up... lol i have a bumper and lights and a winch control box blocking my grille lol and then i have two coolers blocking what else is exposed lol... youll be good, your thermostat will probably be open more often but oh well. i have never had any over heating issues with my motor. -i also did replace the rad, and did a coolant flush last year, and did a timing belt and water pump about 6mo ago so everything is good to go. but even before that i only had a overheating issue once, and that was sitting in traffic for 4+ hours in 100+ temps thats when i got the spike and said F it im going dual coolers with a fan

good to know, I guess I was being overly critical.

ok after having looked around......... bought a cooler. which factory line is in which is out?

thanks

i believe the ouside line is the out ling and the inside line is the return line, im not 100% on that but pretty sure, as i know my lines do not cross, and my temp sending unit is before the coolers and its on the right front(as i sit in the truck). id check for you, but id have to drop my skids and that is a giant PITA -if you had budbuilts and had wheeled them and dented them up, youd know what i mean... but im pretty sure the outside line is the out line, and the inside is the return line

I just got a 70264 to install taking my radiator out of the mix for trans cooling. Are you saying I may need two 70264's to maintain proper temps if I bypass my radiator?

I'm in FLorida so it's hot a good part of the year. Not a daily driver so no stop and go traffic really but trail riding would be slow, so now I'm concerned and rethinking. I see so many on the forum running only one stand alone 70268 or 70264 and that's the reason I'm questioning.

Thanks for the insight.

id go with two personally. i dont think the single is big enough to handle the loads of of wheeling, but i have never been to fl, so how and where you wheel your rig will affect that alot. im not sure how humidity works/effects this equation, it might actually help cool idk but it could also hurt things. i know even here in the PNW we can get weeks of the 90s and even a few days over 100. i dont think fl has much for mountains or the like, so long steep climbs probably arent a concern. you could try the single cooler, but id say a gauge is a must so you can see if temps are getting too hot. but being as though you have armor -bumpers and sliders, and a winch, larger tires without a regear ect id say you are gonna be taxing your drive train as it is.

Why not use one of the bigger "universal" coolers (by self or in series with another)? 70274? no installation kit it seems though? Says it has 1/2" fitting so I guess one would need an adapter to put it down to 3/8"? I have the 70268 (not using radiator tranny cooler) and did notice my temps from SG2 in 85 degree heat pulling a 3000# trailer spike up around 240-260 after going up some hills... generally was around 200-220...
