Atrac aint up to the task.. Locker choices?

We doin MT LT now? We're doing MT LT now. Still need to max out the suspension with the 35s. I just don't want to drag the ramp out, so I have to deal with partial flex on the dock

Investing in a high quality suspension with the most travel in the most efficient package is always a good decision. All my articulation plus my elocker allow my to run circles around my buddies and my dad's 5th gens. And a good amount of jeeps. I'm not just saying this for you but anyone wanting to know more. If a locker + install isn't in the budget a good set of tires aired down to ~15 psi plus suspension travel will help imensily

agreed.. already got my locker, got most of my suspension, got my tires..

Love all the pics, and yeah the Atrac only seems to help when I'm in snow, but if it gets too deep it can be annoying. With the center diff locked it never has an issue, however.

I also have experience with the LR3 (or should I say RS3, as in Repair Shop 3 times a week, boy what a heap of absolute SHIT it was in the year of woenership) Terrain Response did have me pretty smitten as well. I wish Toyota could get something similar going in the 6th gen 4runner I'm waiting for before buying a new rig.

I just have to say, I would never take my Land Rover beyond walking distance from civilization, seemed like every single electrical system failed, leaky everything, headlights just stopped working all together for no reason unless you held the high beams on (then the low beams would stay on), but it did work great off-road when it was running, and it was supremely comfortable on and off road as well.

I would seriously love a RR Sport if they were 1/10th as realiable as a 4runner, they are fantastic on and off road and just look plain badass. I guess the logical upgrade would be a G-Wagen, ultra-tough and even more capable off road than either a RR/LR or a 4runner, but damn they're expesnive. Even a Easter-Europeaned-out 2004 with 180k will have an asking price close to $40k! :wtf:

Doesn't ATRAC conflict with a Locker?

I mean if the rear is locked, what does the ATRAC do? Does it stand down? Or does it fight with the lock?

Atrac works great with a locker. I have a rear elocker and use it all the time. Atrac just leaves the rear wheels alone entirely and plays with the 2 front tires. And while we are on the subject of wheeling off road with land rovers, I have NEVER seen any land rover make it over a 3 foot rock before. Its pretty cute how they can go up slippery hills that you can walk up, but when you have to drag a rock completely down the center of the truck and then bash your bumper up onto another huge rock and keep going, I simply don't see how any of those LR vehicles can take that. I have never seen anyone in the range rover club be able to follow me on Fordyce and I didn't see a single one on any obstacle on the Rubicon. I know that Toyota should have made a better off road ABS system to compete with the LR system, but that's why we have solid rear axles and elockers, problem solved. I don't think any 4wd abs based system compares to a fully locked rear solid axle, but thats just me.

Thanks so much!

So, (to make sure I'm really getting this) if we had both a rear and a front locker and engaged them both, ATRAC would just stay dormant and there wouldn't be any problem, yes?

Somewhat related: How much benefit would there be to having a front as well as a rear locker? Is that overkill?

My other 4runner is locked up front...its not exactly fun to steer with a front locker, as in completely impossible. you can turn the wheels all the way one direction and the truck will go totally straight. If you could turn it on and off with a switch like an air locker that would be the way to go.

All this talk about lockers makes me miss my LC. Easily the best riding and most capable vehicle I ever owned. 3X lockers and it was a monster on some tough terrain.

Yeah, I was picturing an air locker. I'm just wondering if a Limited with front and back air lockers would provide as good or better climbing and "get out of trouble" features than the Crawl/Multi-Select in the Trail editions.

I'm also wondering if the front lockers are overkill. What situations would warrant the use of both front and back lockers?

my 04 limited with a rear elocker retrofit easily out climbs and generally out wheels my dads 2012 trail. now i do have a ton more suspension travel than him, but crawl control and terrain select are OK but not amazing. theyre more for doing the hard work of maintaining speed allowing the driver to focus on which line to take. its not uncommon to see my dads with a wheel 2+ feet in the air with the rear locked and the front atrac going bezerk on the same line that i took with zero issue and no wheels off the ground or atrac kicking in.

honestly a rear locker and knowing how to work atrac to your advantage is going to be a huge improvement over just atrac. as long as you engage the center diff and the rear diff lock, when ever you get one, youll be fine for the vast majority of things. the only time ive felt like it wasnt enough i was already in deep and ended up breaking something or getting body damage.

One thing the crawl/multi select appears to do that can't be done even by very experienced off roaders is control the braking and acceleration of each wheel independently. I find that amazing and will probably always be sad I don't have it. But, your comments as well as others here have given me confidence that I won't really be hampered much -- esp since I'm really not likely to be doing the crazy stuff.
