Just out of curiosity, what 6x9 speakers are you running or referring to? At the end of the day, really all that matters is that you're happy. I may not like it but that doesn't matter, not my truck.

They do. So does Focal, Hertz, possibly Rainbow, CDT, but they're still a 6x9. Very easy, convenient, and a huge upgrade over stock for sure. If you want the best sound possible though, a 2 way component is required at the very least. Personally I love the sound of a 3 way component system, just offers a much warmer more natural sound.

It's a myth that round speakers will automatically sound better than oval speakers. Sound waves are just that, waves. Waves are waves regardless of whether they come off of a circular, or oval shaped cone.
I have a Ph.D. in electrical/acoustical engineering, work as an audio engineer, and have worked with some of the most well known audio manufacturers in the world, but this probably isn't the right place to dive into this topic because everyone else went to school on the internet.
In the end, buy what makes you happy, have it installed and tuned properly, and enjoy the music!

I would prefer a 3-way application as well, but I know a lot of people (myself included) that use a dedicated 6x9"midbass driver in the door. They give you the same cone area as an 8" driver, but are much easier to mount into the factory locations. There is no substitute for cone area... Will a 6x9" provide the same midrange extension as a 3-4" midrange and a tweeter, NO, but it isn't designed to do so. It will produce frequencies up to 2-3k every bit as well as a round speaker.

I agree with a 6x9 for a low mid bass, it'll get the job done. Back maybe 20years ago kicker made a 6x9 component system that had incredible low end mid bass but very lacking in the high mid area. Everyone has different ears though. My front stage will be a 6.5" woofer, 3" mid, 1" tweeter. This component system to be exact.

Looks like a good set up. I just sold a 3-way set of Hertz Mille Legend components that I had sitting around. Should make a for a nice set up.

I'll be making pods for the doors. The 6.5" woofer and 3" mid will mount in the door in place of the factory 6x9 The hole in the steel is huge, plenty of room.

Full Upgrade
I have a 2016 4runner w/ third row seat. I'm currently doing the full install myself that includes:
Pioneer 8200NEX from Crutchfield dot com for 750
Focal PS165F for the F&R doors from ABT dot com. Cost is only 302 a set (270 a set if you sign up for their emails)
JL TW3 12" with DIY sub box from ABT dot com and cost only 259 (chat with the audio specialist for the best deals)
Sound Skin sound deadening front doors from ABT dot com for 69 (chat with the audio specialist for the best deals)
ARC Audio 5 channel 850W from Audio Intensity dot com
Sky High Audio 4AWG amp kit and full rewire with 14 AWG. I am having issues trying to get the speaker wire through the doors. I am going to try to use a clothes hanger WD40 and electrical tape unless anyone has any suggestions.
I also watched the Car Audio Fabrication channel on YouTube for ways to make speaker adapters out of ABS plastic and high density plastic sheeting. I also used sound deadening on the sheet metal using some stuff from Home Depot that works great and is cheaper than Dynamat.
Once I have it all install, I will use a local car audio shop to set the gains and tune the stereo for the best sound. Not a bad set up for all the deals I found.

So where did this land? I just bought a 2017 trd off road with the entune system and it sucks. I want to add a sub, replace the speakers, and probably add some dynamat. How many speakers are there and what sizes? Will I need two amps(4 channel and a mono) or should I roll with a 5 channel? Was thinking about a rockford or alpine sub. I came from a jl w7 and do not need that kind of power anymore but want a nice thump. Will there be anything else needed? I am new to adding sound upgrades to a system with a nav. I don't want to change the head unit or anything like that. Thanks.

Check out my build. It was a DIY project but it sounds amazing and I still haven't added the sub yet. With the vocals in the front and rear and if you use the suggestions from the YouTube sight I suggested (adding mid bass to the doors) you'll debate even adding a sub. The Arc audio 850 watt 5 channel amp from audio intensity is legit and fits perfect under the driver or passenger front seats. I rewired the whole system which was very time consuming but worth it. I ended up having to make alterations to the rear door connections in order to run the wire through the door. If you have any questions hit me up. The sound skin from abt.com is a better option then dynamat to seal the door.
