Audio Upgrade?

I’m going to install an Alpine ILX-107 in my 5th gen and ditch that entune crap. I’ll probably do the same in my Tundra as well.

My question is about the dash kit. The OEM trim around the head unit is a dark metallic but the Scosche dash kit that was sent is silver. Has anyone found a good paint or wrap that matches the OEM trim? I think the silver dash kit looks like crap in there. I honestly wish they would’ve just made it generic unpainted black over the silver.

I dont have an exact OEM match for this, i originaly thought the color was a piano black with metal flake, but it is either a gunmetal or charcoal metallic color. I did paint it with a piano black with metal flake, it looks much better then the silver. but still not there. Once i get done installing the audio i will start looking for a better match for the paint. when i find it i willbe sure to update the thread.

I was planning to do that, and have a spare kit sitting around for it, but just sprayed one with matte black from a rattle can. Honestly it looks great and maybe even preferable to the stock gloss as it's less glare area. I recently replaced the factory HU and did the same thing - bought a 2nd dash kit, but I do intend to take to a body shop to have matched.

My setup is a (new for 2018) Kenwood DMX905S which has wireless android auto and a 7" screen. Wireless AA only works for Google's phones right now, but it's great to have access to AA for short trips without pulling it out of my pocket. My next step for that is to get the 2nd dash kit painted, and add the GPS antenna adapter cable to connect to the 4runner's GPS antenna. Strange that Crutchfield didn't include or even suggest this for some reason.

Before I did the head unit, I installed Focal IS 690TOY's in the front which made a big difference, but the audio was still pretty trashy. The head unit (as expected) made a huge difference and honestly is good enough for me.

But, I now have two pairs of Kenwood KFC-1666S 6.5" speakers on their way for the rear doors and tailgate. Seems the consensus is that upgrading rear speakers makes almost no difference, but Crutchfield has $50 off when buying a Kenwood HU + two pairs of speakers. Cheap (potential) upgrade.

My next step is to use my USB calibration mic (that I've used for a home theater) and maybe REW (?) to see if there's anything I can do with the equalizer.

I put a kicker hideaway sub under each front seat and it was a vast improvement on my pro, plus it didn't take any cargo room up.

Did it fit well? No interference with anything else? Seems like a relatively cheap way to supplement my fairly modest upgrades.

They fit great in the 4ruunner, you will be happy. If it is easy to upload photos on here I can take some for you. I have had one in my Tacoma for a few years now and still running like a champ. I managed to get them off amazon for 186 a piece plus 5% back on that. They come with everything you need. The only downside in this model is there will be an adjuster for each speaker. You can't put them into one, but they are easy to hide just as the speakers are but I have them in a slot under the radio and they look good too.

Thanks for the replies. I bit the bullet and dropped the radio bezel off at the body shop along with a trim piece to match it with. I feel that having the radio bezel match is worth the cost since a non-matching bezel would drive me nuts.

Been debating on two of these just to save space. Hows the bass? Enough to tell there are "aftermarket subs" ?

you wouldnt happen to know what paint code they used? it looks like the magnetic grey metallic, but not positive. Going to paint mine myself but have had no luck finding the paint code.

The bass is solid, I keep mine around 45% and it's enough for me. I think it will fill your needs unless you want to be heard coming down the street,

My painter said that it might be impossible to actually find the code to order paint but he has his own paint mixing/matching equipment so he said he can match it damn near perfect. I believe him because he's done work for me before and he's legit. I also called and emailed a few companies that sell interior paint but none of them could give me a solid answer on the paint code either. Most just wanted to sell me samples and let me see which one is closest. I didn't want to play that game so I went to the body shop and they should have it ready by Monday-Tuesday. I'll relay what I find out.

haha I'm not looking to be heard down the street. I have a 10 in a ported box right now and even that is too much for me. I just want something more "hidden" and gives a good enough bump. Ive been told these things sounds the same as cars that come with stock 8" subs. Which to me, isn't "bump" at all.

Thanks for the reply, sorry for the delay for some reason im not getting notifications to my subscribed threads. but yeah if he has a mixing station he probably wont have a code really. no worries man just didnt know if you had it handy. it looks similar to magnetic grey metallic but darker. Might spray the magnetic grey base and use a black candy and tint the clear coat to get my darkness. just will take some trial and error .

Im doing the same exact set up as you are and have the same question about matching that dark metallic color we currently have. Have you found a solution? Also, just curious what other conponents you are going with to compliment the ILX-107? Thanks and I will share any discoveries I find. Surely we can figure this out!

The auto shop that did mine had a stack of about a dozen chips that looked almost identical to our dash to choose from. They were all so close that it was really difficult to choose. We finally ended up making the decision by putting the chips in the car beside the dash under direct sunlight as the metallic specs had more variation than the grey under-coat. It was a perfect match.
