Audiophiles/stereo heads- easy question?

So I put new speakers in the front doors. I went with coax speakers to go cheap and easy. The factory tweeter is still hooked up and has sound coming out. My question is- should I unhook the factory tweeter? What effect will it have on the sound? Should I buy a new tweeter and install? I tried it both ways and couldn't tell any difference. Thanks, Dan.

absolutely, if you're going to do speakers you might as well do all of them. I like listening to music in my truck so I am not replacing my speakers until I have the best ones. I don't half a$$ my stereo

x2 On going full component... By the looks of the pic your new coax speaker is wired exactly as the old woofer was and is very possibly passing through an OE crossover which is not only not designed to work very well with the new speaker but is also completely defeating the purpose of the tweeter in the coax...

I'd at least wire the new coax directly to HU or amp and then unplug OE tweeter.

Components

Full components up front are the way to go. If wired properly, they’ll raise the sound stage. If you just connected your coax speakers to the factory wiring, all you did was upgrade your mids and mid-bass. That’s an upgrade for sure, but you’re still living with the same factory treble quality for the high pass frequencies being directed to the tweeter in the sail panel.

I suggest either running the tweeter wires to the coax if it is set up for dual inputs (increase sound quality by taking advantage of the new tweeters, although that will pull the soundstage below the dash), or put some aftermarket tweeters in the sail panel which would allow you to leave the wiring alone.

Are you still running off the factory deck? You'll notice more of a difference if you add a better source unit and/or power.

I have ordered a new receiver too now. I would prefer to not open up the doors again if possible. Already broke one tab off of each door. So I could add tweeters in the original spot and they would work then? If that will work that should be easy. This is my daughters high school car so keeping it pretty low budget and hopefully low effort. There are plenty of other things to do on this Runner.

also most forgot to add that you may be damaging your coaxial tweeter since you have it hooked up to the mid bass in line the wiring i would think is trying to push the same frequences a mid bass is designed to play seprately vs. together. That is why it is better to run a component set that drives the mid bass woofer and the Tweeter seprately. it would be a huge difference in sound.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a tweeter for this application?

unfortunatley the only thing you can do is replace the speaker with a component set. is the coaxial you have right now a 5.25"? if so stick it in the rear door and grab a correct set of 6.5" components for the front doors. they should be very inexpensive.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=6.5+component+speakers&_sop=15

take your pick. i am sure the daughter wont know the difference as long as music plays that isnt harsh or "bright"

That is a great idea. Thank you. I ordered some JBL 600C for supposedly half price of $50. I guess I’m taking off the panels again [emoji853]
Thanks for all the replies.

So I have a different opinion than the ones posted here.

Unless you’re doing significant upgrades to other places (new high end head unit, new 4 or 5 channel amp, etc) you likely won’t hear much of a difference at all between your current setup with the stock tweeters still connected and a new set of components. If you don’t plan on doing that, just stick with what you have.

That being said, if you’d like to do that on a budget, get you an affordable 4 channel amp. Some marine 4-channels like what Kenwood offers will suffice. They’ll fit behind the dash and be out of the way.
For speakers Infinity offers an affordable component in their Primus line I believe that will perform just fine.

All that being said, you’ll get a noticeably upgraded sound (not stellar by any means, but still much improved) by adding just about any $100 Head unit from a reputable brand, a small 4-channel amp, any 4 speakers from a reputable brand. Coax speakers should be fine for your application if you go that route. Also, as previously mentioned replace the rears with 5.25”.

So I bought some component speakers (JBL Stage 600). Can I simply wire them to the factory wires right at the mounting point of the speaker? Or, do I have to get inside the door again and wire in aftermarket crossovers? Thanks for all the help!

+1 for that Alpine amp. There are other options less than $200 but that is an excellent option.

Buy the speaker wiring harness. You can open the door panel up, unplug the current adapter, pull the speaker out, then plug n play the new speakers.

I make a bolt on adapter that allows you to run a 6.5" speaker in the rear doors, it just has to be a "shallow" mount 6.5. I made a set for my old rig, then gave a set to a buddy for his '99. A forum member saw my thread and asked to buy a set for his runner, I have 2 sets left but I can easily make more if there's interest.

The current adapter? What/where is that? Is it between the woofer and tweeter?
