Automatic headlights at night : possible mod?

The actual Crawl Control Switch is an ECU, so you need it because it connects to the CAN BUS and tells the Skid control ECU what to do. Because the secondary CAN NODE for the CC ECU is present on the MPX, you do not need to get an MPX from a TRD/TRAIL. The LED icons I am talking about are the idiot light style indicators in the cluster that shows if a system is active or not. If you don't care about those in the cluster, you don't need to swap instrument clusters, but you still need the CC Switch ECU from the overhead. Sounds good! always happy to help!

That makes sense.

Old Red,
Where are you getting your donor MPX/BCMs?

If you have found a economical place please share.
None of the salvage yards around here have late model 4runners and I'm not finding the parts I'm interested in on any of the regular salvage sites.

Here is the promised video. It shows;
 1. the Sensor installed
 2. the dash & infotainment brightness responding to the sensor
 3. the Techstream live data view of the Body Control Module while changing light on the sensor and the headlight switch position

EDIT: It turns out you were right Old Red, the customizations screen does show the auto light options. It has fewer of them than a Camry so I thought it wasn't there but on closer inspection both the on & off sensitivity is present. So that's not included in the video. :)

I turned my headlights on the first day i bought it and have never turned them off since, they turn off automatically after 30 seconds when you lock car.

I've never touched that stalk since. Do they act differently in other models? I have a TRD OR premium

I've had Auto On for so long I sometimes forget to turn them on when in a rental. Amazing the things we get use to.

Omw home from work earlier and this guy comes racing up behind me with no lights on (it's pitch black).. so I flash him as he passes and realized haha

I swapped the BCM in mine when I did the crawl conversion as well. Ended up not needing to do this. The secondary CAN BUS node hardware was already present on my SR5 MPX BCM.

Cool to hear you got your 4R converted to Crawl and MTS.

On my '12 GX 460 (which I converted back in 2/2018) it was just the replacement of the center stack switch-gear w/zero point calibration and replacement of existing Driving Support switch ECU.

DAC versus Crawl Control - ClubLexus - Lexus Forum Discussion

At the time I was able to do both for around $350 IIRC. Crawl on a 460 could be done with a couple toggle switches if they wanted to but so far haven't heard of anyone doing that. MTS requires the ECU but simple plug and play.

Not sure if it is the same on 4R but MTS can be a standalone option...one doesn't need to add crawl for that to go live.

Got them

First post , Bought a 19 trd or premium kdss end of 18 and had auto headlights installed by a local guy who said he got the kit from Directed.com, I assume its a 545t product number as it looks like the kit I see advertised. Works perectly, had it a week now, switch “off” you have auto lights, switch “on” lights on always and when trucks off, they go off after delay, just like factory. I had dealer do the oem remote start, which I didn’t like the dying when door is opened, so I had same guy remove and do a remote start thats works like a Ford, ie, open door insert key and drive off! I have that oem remote kit for sale, if anyone is interested. I can’t start a thread, so I want to ask, I had the Warne semi-hidden winch installed and front end has sagged about 3/4”, I bought this rig for the ride, sold a jeep rubicon, what lift will keep the factory ride as close as possible, thanks in advance flagman

Not sure if this was mentioned.

Would it be possible to use the DEI 545T controller with the OE photocell?
CdS photocells are simple resistor devices. There is no way to directly "share" one without affecting the reading from it. The way the 4Runner gets around this is the MPX/BCM reads the photocell directly and then broadcasts that info to the rest of the vehicle via the CAN bus. That way any system that wants to utilize that data can (Instrument cluster, Infotainment system).

The DEI solution requires it's own photocell and can not share the OE photocell. It can occupy the OE location and you would loose the brightness data for the Instrument cluster & Infotainment system by not having a photocell readable by the MPX. You could also install both the OE and DEI photocells (the DEI in a alternate location) and allow the two to operate independently.

I am also exploring a simple solution with a Arduino or-the-like that would sit in between the light switch and the MPX to control it's function. It would read the photocell via CAN interface. This would allow a single OE photocell and OE like operation.

However this is obviously less desirable than an OE solution using the firmware from a TRD PRO MPX. But the TRD PRO MPX & firmware has proven much harder to get a hold of than anticipated.

Headlights

I had originally asked the dealer to quote me on auto headlights, they said to buy the TRD Ppro harness install it would be $1,500 and they could not guarantee it would work and I'm not joking, flagman

In recent years it seems only the MPX firmware is different. The wiring harness for the photocell is already present. That does seem to differ on 4runners more than a couple years old as they don't seem to have the photocell harness from the factory. The stalk/switch and associated harness also appear to be electrically identical in this regard.

Old Red and I are both pretty sure a MPX swap & photocell install are all that will be required (assuming your 4Runner has the wiring, otherwise add that to the list). But obtaining a TRD PRO MPX has been very difficult and thus far a show stopper. :ohwell:

I posted about this subject a couple of yrs ago; hoping that this wiring/component scheme will help you some!

"...Anyone have any diagrams or schematics or anything?"

Hi Bimmer-Bob,

I'm leaving this 5'th gen 4Runner 'limited' Headlight circuit diagram here on this thread; hoping that you (everyone) will accomplish your goal. I took a quick look at the diagram and marked the essentials needed to make it work, "see below":

It looks like you'll need only four parts as noted by the I.D. labels in pen e.g., the Headlight dimmer switch assm, Dimmer SW. harness, Automatic light control sensor, and the Light control sensor harness. The Main body ECU Network compu are ALL the same from 2010 to 2015 (or even now... 2019), so no changes needed there. 'Best to you all,

rig, cheers!

I appreciate your help. I was looking over those diagrams early on and they were invaluable.
Regarding electrical/component layout, you're right, the various MPX units are the same. However they do differ in firmware.
Thus far unique SR5 and Limited configs have been identified. It seems likely that there is a TRD PRO config as well and likely others if not one for each module type (very likely if for no reason than to correctly identify in techstream).
All the various MPX configs can be found here. All likely only different by firmware.
My own TRD OR detects as calibration (firmware) 892213524001. That breaks down to Part 89221, Calibration type 35240, revision 01.

rigtec, thank you for pulling up the diagram again! This is where I started when looking to possibly do this. This did gain me the ability to have the dash lights dim based on ambient light, so thank you sir!

I have the sensor, wiring, and "Auto" headlight switch. Adding just those do not give you auto headlights. ColtB45 will tell you similar. In this situation, and a few others I have found while tinkering with things, is that the programming is not the same. I have physically pulled the memory dumps from a few MPX's from a few different trims at this point.

I have also swapped out MPX's for a Limited MPX that has the auto headlights, and while I gained the "Auto" function, I lost door lock control via the remote fob. Different Vehicle security software programming.

So folks, a TRD PRO MPX "profile" is not only required but completely different than say a SR5, Trail, TRD offroad MPX in part because it has the traditional key vehicle security software and the program for the "Auto" headlights.

Out of curiosity, how long does it take to pull a full memory dump from an mpx? It would be amazing if a local (to you) Pro owner would afford the privilege.

ColtB45, Nice! I have never seen that screen. That makes sense that the calibration type would be the trim level equivalent part.

G'day ColtB45 / Old Red ,

Sorry that this older post did not resolve the issues! I will, however, ask/suggest pulling the 'Short-pin' from the Main relay/fusebox (if you feel comfortable doing so), to Master RESET the ECU's to their factory settings. Once they've been without power for a full four hours, ALL temporary files, history logs, learned data... will be deleted and revert to their default factory settings; much like a windows laptop when the CMOS or BIOS gets reset!

There's a chance that these components will begin communicating with the Main body ECU compu network/Certification ECU as if assigned to your vehicle from the factory. I think if that doesn't do it, I'd just disconnect the NEG battery terminal, again, for a full four hours! I think the worst case scenario would be that it still won't work as planned!

You may be the first member here that ever (actually) attempted this mod, so I'm hoping you can prove that it 'CAN' be done for the rest of this forums members! 'Best to you mate',

rig
