Average header install cost? 4.7 V8

Allrighty, Im on the cusp of ordering a set of thorley headers to replace my leakomatic manifolds. My usual mechanic is hesitant to spit out an estimate until he can take a good look at both the truck and the headers. Thought about doing them myself but its a bit beyond my mechanical skillset and my physical toolset. Anywho, those who paid someone to install em, what did it run you?

I just went through the process of replacing my leaking exhaust manifolds with the Doug Thorley Headers and I'm very happy with the end result. These new headers are a big improvement over the stock manifold so I'm hopeful that I won't have to worry about hearing or smelling exhaust flues in the cabin ever again.

I called and visited a lot of shops in my town and end-up going with Guys Muffler (Link). I cannot say enough good things about them. They did great work and gave me a very fair rate. The book hours on this job was 19, but they got it done in 10 and charged me accordingly.

I had them remove the old exhaust manifolds on both sides, install the new headers, weld on the new cats, and remove the pair of secondary cats.

After the headers and new cats were installed I saw at least a 2mpg improvement, but no noticeable change in performance or sound except that it was much quieter after the exhuast leak was fixed. The thicker header tubing I think also helps suppress sound in the engine.

A month later and had them install the largest straight-through muffler that Magnaflow makes and then I noticed an improvement in performance, although the sound was hardly any louder that stock muffler. I guess that's my fault for being to conservative with selecting a muffler. I might go back later and have them remove the stock resonator to see if that increases the sound.

The stainless muffler I had them install looks really nice so I don't want to have to swap that out.

Eh...800 for labor sounds about right. Still cheaper than stock manifolds considering parts alone are 1500

I was charged 16 hours labour. with taxes came to about $1800 CDN funds or $1365 USD. They said it was a real pain and hardly any room to work. I paid an additional $75 CDN to have the cats cut off, polished and welded on.

5th Gen Four Runner headers?

I could use a little help. I have a 2018 4 Runner Limited. I've recently installed a Borla cat back exhaust and a K&N Air Charger cold air intake. I have also installed a Pedal Commander. I have inquired about the cost to install Doug headers and have been informed that unless a tuner can crack the Toyota ECU there would not be much reason to install headers. Also, can I just eliminate the cat converter? Is there a real benefit to installing a so called performance cat converter over a stock converter? I'm thinking Doug Headers AND eliminating the cat converter as long as these mods would not require an ECU tune.

This website always talks about two options: the DT headers or the Toyota OEM manifolds that will just crack again eventually. But what about aftermarket manifolds that look thicker? Has anyone ever had those installed on a 4th gen?

Well MagnaFlow makes a couple of 4Runner manifolds like this.

Wow i got quoted here in canada by a local muffler shop i have used before for welding and replacing pipes like $700 canadian for new header installs which is like $550 freedom bucks

Good experience. They provided me with all the bolts. Money well spent on those guys. 4 years later and still strong.

For someone else thinking about doing this (not the OP), I got Pacesetter headers installed in the Chicago suburbs in 2018 (?) for ~$750, and I also had a $75 coupon from them that I was able to use (~$675 net cost to me).

My relative who is a mechanic wouldn’t touch it. There was easier money to make doing brakes, tires, etc. where he worked at the time. (He wasn’t the boss.)

I’m sure you’re not looking for an answer anymore since this is over a year old, but I think whoever told you not to do the headers is wrong. Headers would likely be the single best thing you can do for performance. It will get you more than that intake and catback did.

Look into URD and their MAF calibrator, it essentially gives you a small tune.

As far as cats go, the short tube headers will utilize the stock cats and shouldn’t throw any codes.
Long tube headers will delete the front cats so you’d need some kind of O2 sim to get rid of the CEL it’ll throw.
