AVIC-Z1 teaser pic

I have a question about your install. I have the JBL 6 disc in dash changer on a 2006 Limted. I am very interested in the avic z1. how easy is it to 'switch out' the head units in this case? Also, did you have the steering wheel controls? if so, can you still use them? Is ther anything you dont like about the system so far?
 
Sorry I don't know anything specific about installation on JBL system. I suggest you call AutoBacs and ask them (I posted phone somewhere in this thread).

Steering wheel controls works via PAC adapter. Read thread for model #.

I love everything about the Z1. No complaints so far.
 
Did you get a receipt for the install? If so, then they didn't ground the parking brake lead. Probably illegal for them to do so.

Pull apart the HU and check it.
 
It's a really nice system. Too bad you paid MSRP, though. I can get them brand new for $1950. That has to be a hell of a lot less than MSRP.

If only I had an extra $2000 in cash on hand since I don't use credit cards anymore. I'd get one myself if I did.

that is a beautiful unit!

after reading the instructions, it looks like my old pioneer unit that i have.

there should be a light green wire coming out of the back of the unit.

just ground that wire and it should work fine.

they have it hooked upto your parking brake, they did not ground it.

they probably can't because it is illegal for them to.
just figure out where they tapped into the parking brake lead, and then ground that wire, and voila, you will have video.
 
I'm afraid it's not that simply. The Z1 relies on parking brake lead and gyro sensors to detect movement. If any movement is detected, the video won't play, I get a prompt saying something like it's "illegal to drive while watching DVD's". I still get audio just fine though.

I know that they did ground my parking brake wire, because even when I'm driving the unit diagnositics shows that the parking brake is on. Installation diagnotics shows everything is installed properly, so if they didn't ground something I think the system would detect an installation error.

I think the only way around this is hacking the software. I'm just waiting for someone to attempt this process.

oooh, i forgot about the nav

i have a buddy with a pioneer navigation thing, he said he had to jump some sort of wire insdie of the brain to get it to work. it did void his warrenty though.
don't know if you want info on what he did or not

On the AVIC-N2, there are two points(beneath a sticker) on the underside of the unit that can be jumped that allows bypass of the safety feature. If you do a google, you should be able to find it. I have done the mode on my unit and everything works when the 4Runner is in motion.
 
Thanks for the insight guys. I'm not too bum about the DVD watching thing. If I really wanted to watch DVDs I'd rather do it on the big screen at home. It's a cool novel idea that might get me into a serious accident and T-Bone some poor unexpecting soul.

I LOVE IT... that's like the coolest mod EVER... :rocker:and I don't even have the freakin' unit. Excellent info Curtis. Just the words "bypass...the safety feature" crack me up.
 
Just installed

Just installed the AVIC-Z1 in my 2006 4runner.

I replaced the subwoofer and amp/ left the other amp and speakers.

Very clean install. Pretty cool so far.

I have had it installed for about 2 hours now.

I did find I stuck in a CD with MP3's cannot copy those. This seems pretty lame.

The 30 gig drive is pretty small

And the changing the driving options while in park seems lame as well.

Buteverything else works great. Seems to have enough power.
The sattelite radio works, rips CDs pretty quickly. And I like the display of the navigation system.

So I want to know how to get my MP3's on there. As well as a parking brake override.

You can't rip MP3'z to the AVIC-Z1. Your manual will state that clearly. I guess Pioneer doesn't want RIAA to sue them for people "sharing" music. The manual also said that you can't rip music from CD-R (only allows regular CD - the type you buy), but I was able to successfully ripped from a burned CD-R - I burned using Nero.

Did you get NavTraffic tuner and Bluetooth adapter? I'm waiting for the units to arrive from Japan in a few weeks. Anxious to see how well the NavTraffic functions works. Some say there is a delay from when the traffic occur and the time you receive it on the Z1.
 
The Blust tooth module is not available yet so I have been told.

I think I will probably get a rear view camera to hook up.

I think I am going to pull out the disk drive and see about making a backup. And trying to go bigger.

Supposedly its just a laptop drive running
Mcrosoft Automotive windows. So in theroy I should be able to clone and set the 10 gig to a larger partition.

Just not sure if I want to pull the drive out now . after all the car is only 4 days old and the AVIC-Z1 about 2 hours old.

I guess I have a Toyota JBL 6 CD changer for sale now any idea on its worth?

That'll be sweet if you can swap out for larger HD. I'm concern about heat generated by larger disks. But, 10Gig is plenty of space for my music collection. I wonder if the NAV function will be slower if you go to a bigger HD since it have larger disk area to seek for certain maps/data. It'll be cool if there was a defrag option.
 
Just asked Pioneer if the XM, NavTraffic, and iPod adapters I use with my AVIC-N2 work with the AVIC-Z1....and they said "yes". Hmmmmmm...... :)
 
I have an 06 Limited and am wondering if the AVIC-Z1 will work with the factory JBL amp that is installed. Is it really as simple as installing the new stereo and that's it?

I meant to ask you this in my earlier post - duh :bash:

What head unit DID you have prior to the install of the Z1??? The reason I ask is because the dash trim around yours looks great, and I suspect that is because you had the stock system w/ the single disk CD player...?

I have the 6-disc JBL and will probably have to do some modifying of my trim...oh well...
