After following the navigation sagas with the OEM and Eclipse units I discovered that Crutchfield sells the AVN5435 for $1699. Since this is the same price that I bargained Al and Eds to but with no sales tax. I ordered out the unit and the Sirius receiver.

Crutchfield sold it to me after swearing it would not fit, but we know otherwise! With the Schotche brackets it fits perfectly. I now have XM through the VTR input from my XM Comander and Sirius from the built in input.

I replaced my Kenwood ExCelon receiver with this unit. With the stock speakers and the internal amps the sound is about a wash. The Eclipse might sound slightly better, but that might be the money I just spent talking.

I backed up the version 1.2 Map DVD since I can not see risking a $300 disk. The Double sided Verbatem disk works perfectly.

The mapping is impressive. I really like the fact that if you over-ride its choice it dynamically reconfigures the route.

While I am a tech and I could figure out the connections. The photos from the very long OEM thread took all of the work out of the install. It took about an hour and a half to change out the stuff in my cities nice clean install bay.

I took a photo of my new Eclipse. I really think this is a better choice than the Toyota navs from oem value for the non JBL trucks. The AVN gives MP3, Sirius. and an external video input extra. It still supports stearing wheel controls and a rear camera. The camera will be my next project.

If you are not adding Sirius the install is completly plug and play except for three wires. Since Fujitsu ten makes the stock radio and Eclipse, The connectors are the same. It mounts with the stock radio brackets with the Schotche Toyota Double Din adapters. Only the Speed, Backup, and Parking Brake wires have to be connected. The rest plugs right in. The GPS antenna is velcroed to the air conditioning duct in almost the same spot as the factory antenna. The old long thread has all the details including photos!
 
Bummer now I need to put more money into the Runner :D Is the parking brake connection so you can't use the DVD without the parking brake engaged or does it surf some other function. If not can it be bypast?
 
Clean install, it looks factory! Seeing that (for that price) is really pushing me to order one. You said that it's direct plug and play for the non-JBL systems though? I have the upgraded JBL system in my truck. Would this not be compatible?
 
My parking break wire actually goes to a switch in the center console. I could leave it grounded but I do not like seeing a blank screen when I am listining to XM Radio. Unlike some systems, grounding the parking break wire makes the unit fully functional. If you want to watch a DVD driving down the road, It will let you crash into some poor sucker.

In a JBL System the amp under the seat would have to be bypassed and the speakers wired directly. An amplifier would also have to be provided for the subwoofer. To my mind this is a major project.

Yeah, that does sound like a lot of extra work. Bummer, I should have went with the V8 instead of the JBL Synthesis :bash:. Oh well, I guess all that map reading in the Army aught to come in handy then... :D
 
Ok taking the plunge, but what Scosche adapter kit will I need the TA2044B or something else? Any other tips to help on the purchase (additional parts) or install?

I second that motion Glenn. I think we need a complete install guide. Looks like you did a great job and you have me thinking its the way to go. What other mods have you done? We need PICTURES, part numbers and a blow by blow. Maybe Eclipse will pay you for the business!:p
 
If you have the factory JBL, why not go for the Solara Nav unit sold by OEMValue. That is what I did. They are almost the exact same unit. The only difference is that you can use XM instead of Sirius. Also, the video function requires a little modification but can be done. It is the same price, and requires no modification of brackets or speaker run arounds.

For me Sirius probably makes more sense. XM reception up here is spotty. Sirius must have a sat right over NY so the signal holds up a lot better according to folks who have experience with both.
 
I did nothing original. All of the information is here if you search for it. I followed a well defined path that does not need yet another blow by blow write-up.

You're right most of it is here (and there) - scattered about in a lot of different places (and on some other sites as well). I was looking for the easy way out - consolidate all the data in one place - maybe even make a FAQ and sticky it given the amount of interest there appears to be for this particular unit. If I can scrape up the cash for the upgrade maybe I'll take a stab at it. Thanks for the information you have posted. It helps.

Now who can tell me about speaker upgrades that will fit my front door? :mad:

could you give me a little bit more detail on where you mounted your GPS antenna. i bought the avn 5435, but have not even installed it yet. btw your install looks nice!
 
If you look behind the radio after it is removed you can see two air conditioning ducts with a gap between them. The factory antenna mounts on a bracket in the gap.

The antenna is so tiny there is more than enough room to velcro the metal ground plane square to the top of the duct in nearly the same location as the Toyota antenna. Then just stick the antenna to the plate with its magnet. I coiled the excess cable and taped it to the top of the other duct so it was out of the way.

If you use the vol top, bottom,top,bottom secret sequence to get into the diagnostics menu it always sees six sattelites so I presume the unit has a six channel GPS receiver. Correction. It appears to have a modern 12 channel receiver. At cold startup it will show 12 channels. The most sats that I have received is eight with a nineth flickering. Pretty good for not having a roof mounted antenna!

Spider5, I no longer have the package so I do not have the number. I think it was SC 70 but I am most likely wrong. It was described as a double din adapter fot a Scion, Precis, and a couple of other models.

I followed a link in a previous thread to find it. I then printed out the information and took it to a dealer I found through the web site. They had it in stock for $12.95
 
Thanks found it TA1465B. I just wanted to make sure I was covered with all the parts before starting. There is nothing worse than taking your dash apart and having to go get more parts, or worse having to wait a couple of days to get parts.
