I agree with the article about the differences between AWD and 4WD. 99% of the vehicles with AWD do not have the ground clearance, articulation or traction to get across bad spots in the trail. Watch Matt's Off-Road Recovery YouTube and you'll see plenty of examples of him having to rescue foolish people who took their vehicles on trails they shouldn't be on.
 
Its definitely a gray area and a lot of different statements on what constitutes 4wd vs awd. We have a 2017 highlander XLE, which is AWD, which states it has a locking center differential. definitely not the ground clearance or articulation, but is the Awd/ 4wd system different than the limited 4runners that are AWD with locking center differential. Or is it the presence of the low range 4wd, which 4runners would have, but not the highlander

IE honda pilot, honda ridgeline, honda passport, Rav4, Jeep Cherokee - especially those ones that have off road badging

Maybe the park service needs to start 'rating' vehicles...on what qualifies or not by their definition and testing.

Then they can give out true 'trail rated' badges to the manufacturer's models that earn them...
 
I have heard many times several 'experts' who will tell you...even the legendary Toyota LC100/200, with full time 4WD arent truly in 4-wheel drive mode until you lock the center diff...

if they are going to make this a requirement, then they need to task someone with making a list of vehicles that they will allow on these trails.

just my 2 cents...
