Awful MPG on a new 5th Gen

Same as OP but I do enjoy throwing her into S-mode and have lead foot.

8K on my stock TRDP so far and I’m trying to take it easy lol.

I have done this twice now and the bliss is definatly gone

Well crap. Whats the calculation for this.

I'm trusting the odometer here. So just miles since last fuel up divided by gallons. I use A-Car app on my phone. It's basically like Fuelly or some others. It's just a free app that you record your odometer and fuel every tank. You can keep track of all sorts of other stuff too, but I mostly use for gas costs. Since my tires are taller than OEM tires I adjust myself once in a while. The formula is simply [(height of new tire)/(height of OEM tire)]x(mpg). So if my calculation says 19 I would take 33/31.6 = 1.044 and multiply by 19 for an adjusted mpg of 19.84. In my head I actually just add a full 1 mpg to make myself feel better about getting crappy mileage.

If you hold down the "DISP" button while you're in the mpg screen it resets it. I do that almost every tank. Not sure why it's not programmed to reset on its own like every other current Toyota I know of. But you have to do it manually. Most other toyotas have both a mpg since last refuel and average mpg since you last manually reset it.

Mileage in these things do suck. I watch mine drop every time I do a mod to my truck. Thus far, the roof rack has been the biggest hit. Prior to any mods, I could drive from Southern California to Bishop and back and average 22 MPG without too crazy of effort and keeping the tachometer at just under 2K in cruise. After my lift that dropped to 20 MPG, then after my sliders, bumper and winch it dropped to around 18 MPG and finally after my roof rack it's down to about 16 on the same trip to Bishop. I'm starting to look at the new Jeeps with a keen interest in how the diesel motor works out after a couple of years.

The moral to this story, if you want to have sumwhat decent economy, keep it stock. I have a 2017 SR5 P. I was getting in stock form 14.7 to 14.9 mpg. but at 200 miles i got kings installed which gave me 2" of lift, still had the same milage. After about 4000 miles i got an alignment. I do not know if it was break in or the alignment, but it is now 15.7 average. If i see 16+ i would be happy, but whatever. This is my boy Cosmo, when his attitude changes, so will mine.

Good thread. I've been having the same thoughts. I've had mine 60 days, ~2500 miles, and the OBC reads 14.8. City driving and I drive like an old man.

My 2010 got a very consistent 19 in town and at least 22 hwy at 70+ mph. Hell it would get 24-25 mph at 60 mph.

It is new. It is winter. I do not idle to warm up. I fill to the click always. Habits are identical to the 2010. I sure hope this is not a precursor to the mpg of the new one.

What I do wonder is: If this remains constant, and Toyota says "17 mpg city", what do I do about it?

what tires did you have on the 2010 and what tires do you currently have? I bet that plays a role as well.

I would say yes to tires, that is a big decision on the gas milage thing, so again in stock form, in the best of conditions, but who the f>~k does that? Hey, i'm an old f<~>er and i don't, but hey, to each their own.

I thought it took awhile for that dash measurement to become 'accurate'. I reset the thing every thousand kilometres (6500) on it now, 2017 Off Road model. Under 5K it seemed to be all over the map, but now it seems to be settled at 17Litres for 100Klms ( 16.5 mpg ? ) I drive primarily City too, been dropping the stick into 4wd alot this winter too (still on stock tires). So sounds like you might have a legit beef !

17L/100km is 13.8 mpg

Mine takes a hit in the wintertime too. Lots of 4x4, warming up, and winter gas = a bad time to watch fuel consumption

Man I feel pretty good getting 15.9 .8 around town get about 320 mi to a tank & with 285s so somebody is goosing the right pedal men ! WTH

Crappy winter gas could have something to do with it.

I'm at 16.7 @ 15k miles (about half city), 275s and 2" lift with rack, live at 6000' MSL. About two months ago I noticed my mileage getting worse for no apparent reason (other than the time of year), so went from 85 to 87 octane, which seems to have restored my prior average.

(originally got about 17.3 prior to lift/tires/rack)

13 mpg sounds Way too low for stock. I remember on TacomaWorld a guy had a horrible mileage and there was a theory that the fuel system wasn’t closing after reaching operating temp. If I recall the fuel system is open until it gets to operating temp then closes. Which means that until it heats up there’s no fuel return to the gas tank. If this was malfunctioning that could be a problem. Dealership should be able to check it?

Not sure what kind of fuel your State has. I get 17 on California fuel, 20 to 21 all day long on Idaho fuel. Icon suspension and 3 inch lift, Yakima Skybox, winch and bumper

Worst fuel mileage yet was 14 mpg: driving 78+mph into a 30-40 mph head wind for 3 hours.

My estimation is a combination of winter gas blends and cold weather. The cold weather may be keeping the engine controls in open loop much longer than normal.

Anyone that bought a 4Runner thinking they would get "good" mpg is,..well,....you know.

Add that most on here do several mods, and none of those help. In fact, the opposite.

living in the cold north and the hilly area 13 MPG is about what is normal.
my 2016 gets 14 MPG when zero temps hit .. now next week down in the warm south 75-85 F I get about 20 MPG also flat ground.

with 3K on it I would check the rear diff gear oil .. my oil was a nasty black.. after I changed it MPG improved about 1.5MPG..

I now have 10K on it no problems ..

Hey guys, does anyone else have bad gas mileage on a brand new 5th gen? I picked up my '17 SR5 limited about 3 months ago and have been averaging less than 13 mpg combined after 3,000 miles. I live in the city but my commute is about 25 highway miles daily. The think is just absolutely sucking down gas.No mods or anything.

Anyone else have similar issues/advice?

Let’s see where your gas is going.
Reset just before you leave on your commute. Note what it is before you hit the hwy and reset again. Breakdown as many segments of your drive as you feel would help and report back.

Wow- lots of good responses here and I'm wicked glad that I am not the only one. 12.7 mpg as of this morning according to the dashboard as of this morning in about 20 degrees in Boston.

I have a remote starter installed and always have it running for about 10 min before heading to work, which has helped a little bit. I have seen it even lower than 12 mpg if just doing a cold start.

I knew I hated winters up here, but didn't think they'd hurt my wallet this much.. lol
