axle swap with tacoma

So i was thinking about an axle swap and was wondering if i could swap with the same gen. taco. or tundra any info would help.:biggrin2:

Are you talking about the front end cause a taco has an ifs like a 4runner. Are you talking about a SAS?

No just looking for cheaper way to get a rear locking diff. Cause i have an 01' and i read that the 96-00 came out with rear lockers but haven't found any. But do they come with a rear locker or is it one that just stays on

I think the 01 and 02s had them too. My guess would be to look in junkyards for taco and runner rear axles that are intact that have diff locks.

-They have a switch to the left of the steering column that you can engage the locker while in 4lo. Theres also something called a limited slip differential that sends power to the wheel that isn't spinning for better traction. But off roaders use the locking diff.

Yes and no, not all of them had them, search on car-parts.com for third members/ rear diff. You would also have to have the same gear ratio as the front.
If you found one out of a tacoma you would have to swap out just the third member, since tacomas use leaf springs instead of coils.

Thats the BIG factor here, Taco's have leaf spring suspension. A LOT of work involved to do this conversion. Try and find a locked 4Runner axle assembly instead. Also, doing only a third member swap will require significant housing mods, but if you can weld then you'll be fine.

The rear locker was discontinued for 2001. 2001 and 2002 models got the locking center differential. My dad's old 2000 Tacoma had a rear locker, so you could most likely get one from an old Tacoma. But you just have to make sure you get the same gear ratio in the new axle that you swap in

For the taco's there was two gear ratio's if im not mistaken. The plus side there was the prerunners that all had auto's and i think the gears are 4:10. Im sure there are ton's of them around. I think the 5 speeds had 3:83. I thought most of the 4runners had 4:30 gears with the lockers. Anyone know if the 4runner also had 4:10 gears with the lockers.
