Back into another 4runner

Hey guys, I'm back into another runner (well, mostly my wife's new daily driver) ... This time a 16 limited blizzard pearl with redwood interior. Previously had an 11 sr5 magnetic Grey. Just wondering how the stock tires are on the limited, and if I should swap prior to driving off the lot on Wednesday? Good bad and ugly on the stock rubbers? Living in rural Northwest MN, so the conditions speak for themselves.
Lookin for best on road manurisms for snow and best handling...but also great looks and a/t performance . Worth swapping?

Never had any issues with my stock rubber in Indiana, but love my current Cooper ATP's. You do need to ditch the 20 inch wheels for those .

I would sell them on craigslist and get a quality tire.......

I drive on M/T's year round in Minneapolis in the 4runner however the wife's AWD sedan has a full set of snows and we take that if we have to be out in the storms. If its for the wife, I would get dedicated snow tires simply for the fact that if anything ever happened I would forever wonder why I was to cheap to buy an extra set of tires.

The reason I don't have them for the 4runner is more related to storage issues and perceived need. Snow tires will outperform all seasons or summer tires in those conditions , period. However I feel a lot of risk can be mitigated by matching driving habits to the conditions. Similar to giving someone a lifted rubicon on 44's but with no offered experience is very likely to not make it as far down the trail as a experianced driver with a stock rubicon. Or a race car driver with a 500hp RWD car will tear apart a novice with 700hp and AWD.

EDIT: I really meant I would keep them for summer tires and buy a new set of tires/wheels for winter (not 20"). I kept my stock wheels and only wanted 1 set hence my original comment to sell stocks. In a perfect world I would sell the stock tires, get new performance tires for wet & dry and then a separate set for winter but its not realistic for most to drop 2k plus into rubber and wheels

Check out "all-weather" A/Ts as a compromise between running a second set of winter tires. Softer rubber compound, more siping means better winter performance. Cooper, Nokian, and now Falken have offerings in this category.

As [MENTION=96008]Engineer[/MENTION] says and as I'm sure you know based on location, skills goes a long way in winter driving, but having the right tool for the job can't be understated.

All-weathers (Nokian in particular) are becoming a very popular choice on Canadian roads these days.

All-weathers (Nokian in particular) are becoming a very popular choice on Canadian roads these days.

The OP did not fully specify that his Limited will come with the 20x7 rims that take 245/60R20 tires - this makes tires choices very limited (no pun intended).

If Nokian made all-weather tires in the 245/60R20 size, I'd be all over them!

After 36 years of winter driving experience in central Wisconsin and the Twin Cities area... I would tell you I was pleasantly surprised by the winter performance of the stock Yokohama tires which came on my '14 Limited. I can't speak to the Bridgestone tires that come on some Limited's... but the Yoko's weren't bad. Trust me... in 36 winters, I've driven with some pretty crappy tires on other vehicles. Note the Limited's full-time 4WD system is partly to credit for this - it's a pretty sure-footed system, even with modest tires. After two winters and about 24K miles, the stock tires still worked pretty decent.

That said... I did swap out my Limited's wheels and tires to 17's, and went with Cooper A-TW's in the stock 265/70-17 size. This tire is Cooper's AT3 with added winter siping and other enhancements for the RMA Snowflake rating. So far I love them as an upgrade from stock, for a lot of different reasons. If you find yourself driving on lots of unimproved roads, the added sidewall of a stock (or larger) tire on a 17" rim might be your best bet.

I'm about to take delivery of my '16 TE and had the dealer pull the OEM tires (with a minor credit) and replace them with Cooper Discoverer A/TW (LT load E) tires. They're a year-round all-terrain tire that is winter-rated. Not sure if they have a size that fits a 4Runner Limited or not, but I've heard they are fantastic.
